since he sneaks in anyway, why didnt he sneak in WITH his saber instead of force-grabbing one at the lkast possible second ?

i can imagine he was trying to show good faith, but who woulda known ?!?! he snuck in!!!!

and on another note, luke does speak huttese.... wouldnt hit have been cool to see him speak huttese with subtitles?!?!? i say yeaaaaa

    One of two reasons
1 he wants to get Han back without a fight.
2 it does not go with black.

Because if he hid it in his pocket...

...Jabba might get the idea that Luke was 'happy to see him'.

Luke, being from Tatooine, probably knew of Jabba's preferred method of execution, and assumed that they'd be taken to the Pit of Carkoon. So, he hid it in R2 to keep it safe in case he needed it later. (you know, Force precognition and all) If he talked his way into getting Jabba to let his freinds go, then super. He'd get his saber back when he got R2 back. Plus, he possibly figured he'd be given a good look-over for weapons before he went before Jabba. It wouldn't do for some Gamorrean to take his lightsaber. ( Yeah, I know he'd just Force them into giving it back, but it might cause unnecesary trouble, which he wanted to avoid.)

A confined space -- surrounded by potential enemies -- is not the right place to attempt to brandish a weapon. Not to mention that when captured (as he was), the weapon would be taken and thus is no longer available for a potential escape. Luke edged his bets.

Luke would have been screwed if R2 had been left back at the palace when Jabba took him to be executed!

He does. R2D2 has it, so at the opportune time, he can eject it into Luke's hand. Of course, such plans never work in reality. Poor Luke, he should have......Oh wait!

Luke knew what has been said in the saga thusfar: "This weapon is your life."

If it was taken by a guard or by Bib Fortuna, he'd have been in a world of trouble.

Why doesnt luke wear his lightsaber into jabba's palace?
It's inside R2-D2. And he sent R2-D2 ahead early with C-3PO.
He gave the driods as a "gift" so that Jabba, being greedy, would keep them with him on the sail barge.
Maybe C-3PO even asked Jabba to keep R2 together with him. They're both pretty useful driods anyway.
I don't think it's very complicated, it just requires some logical thinking.
    OK, I'm done. ;)

I can understand the lightsaber thing, but giving up Chewbacca? Thats just unnecessary.

But then again, maybe Luke saw the future.........

    i dont buy it.

i think those arguments are flimsy at best.

he coulda and shoulda went in there with his saber.

he needed a lesson in keeping ur saber on u just like his father did.

he had this WHOLE thing planned out!

He didn't have it cos he put it in R2, for the big surprise attack!

He knew that if he kept it, he would've been disarmed when he was captured, and then he would never have been able to do ANYHING!

Well (reportedly) there was a scene filmed but not used of Luke loading the saber into R2. I'm sure there was some dialogue that would have explained his plan.

My guess is Luke intended to hook up with R2 to retrieve it once inside. Plan B seemed to work though :D

If Luke had taken the lightsaber there never would've been that nifty action sequence over the Pit of Carkoon, which is what the script called for I do believe.

Would a saber really have benefited Luke? I mean, could he have actually fought off Jabba's entire palace by himself? Doubtful, even for a Jedi. Mell, maybe one of the prequel Jedi could have pulled it off, but not a fledging like Luke.

I guess he just knew some how that R2 would be in the right place at the right time. Course, it would have sucked if R2's feisty attitude had gotten him distentegrated.

    For that matter...

...why didn't Luke simply lead a unit of heavily armed rebel commandos in an attack on the palace to rescue Han?

They could have blown a hole in the palace roof, fired tear gas into the throne room and used a grappling hook to snatch the carbonite block right off the wall.

They could have been in and out in five minutes with a minimal loss of personel and equipment.

    Lucas obviously didn't think things through. 8-}

I think he should have taken 'a' lightsaber in there. I also think he should have one inside R2. What's with putting all the eggs in one basket? I think Luke had plenty of time to make himself a few extra lightsabers.

Luke assumed his mind tricks would work, and if not then hed better not bring his lightsaber to make it ook like force. Best to hide it and save it unless completely called for. My guess is he must have somehow spoken to R2 sometime after the Rancor but before the Sarlacc to at least give him a lowdown on what will happen at the pit.

Maybe because one person wasn't worth that much of a commitment of resources to the Rebels.

Also, wouldn't someone have tried to take Luke's lightsaber if he walked in with one?

I think they could learn a lesson or two by watching "Saving Private Ryan" [face_laugh]
