Why don't they make cereal boxes in cube shapes?

I have just wondered why they never make cereal boxes in the shape of a cube? It seems more convenient.

    They could be stacked.

You will notice that cereal boxes come in the shape commonly referred to as 3D Rectangles. Instead of 3D Rectangles, why not cubes?

Probably just much cereal can fit in a cube as in a 3D Rectangle. But with a Cube you can carry multiple boxes easier, you can stack them in cabinets, you can kick them better, and it is new and very innovative.

I do not know why I have never wondered this before. Who here has wondered this?

    Edit: Look

Pretend that is cereal, and in a cabinet.

The rectangle presents larger panels with which to better differentiate your own personal brand on busy supermarket shelves than cubes would.

Because if the cereal box was a cube, it would just be too darn easy to find the prize in the box, and frankly, that would just ruin the magic of cereal.

I would assume the rectangular shape was intended to maximize storage capacity on a shelf or cupboard.

You are all unwilling to face change. I see this clearly now.

Actually, its just that your change is not bold enough. Perhaps a dodecahedron?

I am trying to talk about a practical and necessary innovation, not zany impractical delusions. Perhaps one day such a cereal box will exist, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Everyone who is currently living in a geodesic dome structure would be thrilled to have dodecahedron shaped cereal boxes to place in their absurdly shaped cabinets.

Call me anal but maximized shelf space seems more practical than wacky innovations.

Spiderfan, I claim that cubes DO maximize shelf space. Or at the very least, is a tie with 3D rectangles.

Fine. If you want to be serious, go back and read this:
This is the reason they are rectangles and not cubes.

What are you, a Lemur? I do not have time for ridiculous lemur logic, this is people food we're talking about.

True they are stackable, but the thin but long shape of usual boxes allows me to easily select my choice brand while taking up minimal shelf space. A cube of the same volume would not be as thin or as long and thus to achieve the same space efficiency you would need to stack them not only on top of each other but one infront of the other. Thats not terribly convenient when I want the one in back. :p

Thus I prefer to stick with the current rectangle approach.

    Well. Hmm.

Nevertheless, what if one disregards the statements of Spiderfan? Clearly I am still correct.

Perhaps if we were to install revolving cabinets in the kitchen. This would overcome the negatives identified by Spiderfan by allowing you to rotate cereal boxes from front to back without having to remove them from the shelf.

Making them rectangular instead of a cube gives me several different ways in which to stack them in my cupboard (as well as the stores on the shelves).
A cube only offers one way.

When you stock the grocery store shelves, to fit them all on the shelf, depending on the heights of the different boxes, you can fit a different number on the shelf.

I can lay some down on top of the full fronted boxes like this to maximize shelf space.

    XXXXXXX

Plus if I remember right, a rectangle minimizes surface area which means they use less (and have to pay for less) cardboard.

The rectangle is easier to hold in your hand. A cube shaped box of cereal would require two hands to pour your Lucky Charms or whatever.

Also, I think Andalite has been replaced by the Borg.

    Beat me to it.

A rectangular solid offers more volume while still maintaining a width acceptable to be gripped by one hand. Considering the average grip width available to humans is a couple inches wide, cereal boxes conform to this to allow one handed pouring. If we maintain this as the max width of a box for gripping needs, then a cube box would have greatly reduced volume.

If cubic boxes of any appreciable volume comparison to current cereal boxes were introduced, one would either require the use of two hands for cereal pouring, or a handle that protrudes outward perpendicular to the edge of the box intended for the cereal to pour from (like the handle on the plastic jugs used to sell milk). However, such a handle would immediately ruin the intended effect of easy stackability (as evidenced by the difficulty to easily stack coffee mugs with their handles).

    Well well well.

Look at all of you and your logic and your fancy facts.

Listen, if facts were all true then the moon would be alive. Is it? Uh, hardly.
