Why is Chewie making fun of Obi Wan ?

In ROTS Chewbacca helped the jedi. He even let Yoda sit on his shoulder. He should have great respect for Jedi considering they protected his homeworld.He should owe them life debts.Instead he and Han crack jokes and make fun of Obi Wan and the Force.

 

i think you are reading too much into this

Chewbacca was put in ROTS for us to enjoy seeing him in a different time and to feel a connection to the OT.

since you seem to be looking for consistency, would you rather he made fum of Yoda in ROTS and told him to get lost?

 

He probably does respect the Jedi, but he thinks Obi-Wan is crazy for wanting to go strolling around the Death Star all by himself. I don't think he's really making fun of Obi-Wan, he just thought he was making a bad choice.

 

I'm guessing he did not know that Obi-wan was a Jedi. I'm also guessing that he thought all the Jedi were dead.

 

I think you found an inconsistency.

That or maybe it wasn't wartime so Chewie wasn't feeling like he had to keep up with the decorum.

 

Well, I remember seeing a making of Star Wars video that included some dialogue of Chewie that was replaced with growling. "That man is insane"

But big deal. Obi Wan isn't the same Jedi who helped free Kashykk from the Separatists. He isn't the same Jedi whom they defended from Clone Troopers. He's just another Jedi, a particularly insane-seeming one. I would imagine when Yoda was fighting on Kashykk, he wasn't talking very much about letting go of one's conscious self and how their eyes can decieve them and all that other Jedi mumbo jumbo Obi Wan related to Luke.

 

Perhaps Chewie thinks Yoda is mad too but is helping him to save himself and his planet....

 

Chewie's probably thinking:

"Look what happened the last time I helped a Jedi - my planet was subjugated by the Empire and I had to become an intergalactic street hustler!"

Yeah, I think Chewie might have gotten to be a little bit jaded in those 20 years since the wars. Perhaps he lost a lot of trust in the Jedi after they let themselves be deceived and wiped out. Han's cynical influence probably didn't help, either.

 

Maybe Chewie was young and innocent in ROTS and over the next 20 years, being a pirate and all, becomes cynical and jaded.

 

I don't buy the jaded spin. It seems like Chewie growls a lot about other people's safety and directs Han in the right direction.

 

Chewie's in his 180's in ROTS, so I wouldn't say he is young and innocent. I don't think he was joking Obi Wan. Maybe he was plenty suprised to see a Jedi around after they were supposed to be wiped out. He's has plenty of respect for Jedi as seen with Yoda and with his conversation with Han about Luke being a Jedi after he was thawed in ROTJ.

 

Maybe Chewie actually thought that the Jedi were dead. Maybe, beyond his best intentions, he truly thought the Empire had won and would conquer the Galaxy forever. When he sees this "Jedi" come into his life looking for help, he's a little reluctant and unbelieving.

 

well, I'll say this. Maybe Han solo was making fun of Obi-wan and the whole "force thing" and Chewie just goes along with Han solo. to prevent fighting.

 

I think that Han Solo would be the one who would want to prevent a fight.

 

He just says ''That old man is mad.'' because really he is.

He's an old Jedi,in an Imperial space station,while they are on their guard because of the ship. Also,they barely passed while in disguise, what chance does Obi Wan have holding a lightsaber and wearing Jedi robes?

 

Obi Wan is the Solid Snake of the GFFA.

 

Yeah, Chewie laughs at Han's jokes, but it's only because he knows something Han doesn't know. I get a sense of Chewie grinning and smiling inside when he remembers the types of stunts Yoda was capable of and how Obi-Wan is now using similar off-the-wall tactics.

The difference with Han and Chewie is that Chewie understands the true potential of the Jedi, so Chewie kind of chuckles at Han's ignorance about "crazy" jedi.

The entire Galaxy was crumbling to the hands of the Empire. The Senate has been dissolved, planets are blowing up, everyone is going to die. Chewy needed a little humor in his life at the time. Okay .. so sue him.
