I just rented this movie yesterday and thought it was pretty fascinating--not to mention badass. But it doesn't seem as though many people have heard of it. Heck, Blockbuster had only one copy--and I had to hunt through different neighborhood Blockbusters to find that copy.

It's not as though the movie lacks acting talent. I thought the acting was very well done, and LotR's Boromir is in it, as well as that dude who played Braveheart's Scottish king.

Did the movie go straight to DVD instead of premiering in the cinema or something?

The new Batman is in it too.

It had a fair run in the cinema but some people stayed away because they thought it was just a poor man's rip off of "The Matrix".

However, its nothing like "The Matrix" (IMO), but is actually a complete rip-off of the sci-fi flick "Logan's Run"

I don't know why it's unheard of. to be honest it was better thatn some of the movies they put in the theater now. I rather enjoyed watching more than the Matrix.

Actually I think it had a pretty limited release in the US. It wasn't sent straight to DVD, but it only went to a few theatres and didn't stay in them very long.

It definitely takes heavily from distopian books and movies, you'd be a fool to dispute that, but it's a cool film in its own right.

I forget the exact reason, it was too Matrixy, some school shootings or such had just happened, whatever, but basically, it got very little in the way of ad time given, and was yanked from theaters relatively quickly. It also didn't get released to that many screens nation wide.

Edit: Fate beat me to it. Rasberries!

Why did I never see trailers for it? Was it only marketed up in the northern states or something?

You know, not even the DVD has the movie's trailers.

    EDIT:

So I guess the creators suffered a major loss, then?

I think the reason the film is virtually unheard of is because it was given no ad-campaign. I heard nothing about the film before and when it was released, and I never saw any campaigning for the DVD release. Almost as if the studio had no faith in the film at all.

I love the film. The storyline is not original, but its great none the less. I own it on DVD. And it definately was not a blatent "Matrix" rip-off as so many people have said.

It's actually the only normal film I own on DVD at this point. And I own 92 DVD's, so that's saying something.

Yeah, if I recall, the studio, (Mirimax? Dreamworks) didn't think the film would do good at all, so they made no attempt to advertise it. Why even make it if they didn't think it would do good at all?

"Why is Equilibrium virtually unheard of?"

    Because it wasn't that good!

Nah, j/k. It was okay, but like someone else posted, it did feel like a poor-mans Matrix, but it had some cool moments in it.

I don't think it fared well in the states because it wasn't very well promoted. Here in the UK on the other hand, it did very well, because it WAS promoted well! Go figure!

Seriously, what exactally felt like the Matrix in it? I don't really see it. The Matrix abused slow motion, and Equilibrium used fast motion, is that it? Is it the dark clothing? But that makes sense in a world that's suppossed to be bland and boring.

The only Matrixy thing I noticed was that Preston's outfit was very similar to the one Neo wears in the last two Matrix films.

But that shouldn't count, because Equilibrium came out before the two Matrix sequels.

It does go back to the ad-campaign (or lack of it).
The only thing I saw were posters with a white guy and a black guy in black PVC outfits with a blue tint. Very Matrix like posters. I figure this is what caused the inadvertant comparison.

The cassock type outfit? It made sense for a group known as "Clerics." That similarity is bunk though, Equilibrium came out first.

Edit: People keep on beating me.

Yeah... that promo poster did remind me a lot of Neo.

Yeah, the costume was fitting for a Cleric.

Maybe it's the whole martial arts and stylish gun-fighting in a Sci-fi backdrop?

They're both dystopias, and Equilibrium is pretty textbook about it (NO EMOTIONS??? ORIGINAL!), which is why there are all the comparisons, I think. But I liked the fight sequences in Equilibrium more. And also Christian Bale and Taye Diggs and Sean Bean are all raging hotties.

It's actually pretty decent. I was impressed - I thought it would be much more cheeseball than it was. The acting was good and the fight choreography was exceptional.

And Christian Bale without a shirt on is worth the price alone.

This is actually a pretty good film. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. Great cast & the story built well on itself. I've heard the pitch as a cross between Gattica & Matrix. There's quite a few of these gems that have gone direct to video.
