    Why does Jabba in ANH look different then Jabba in ROTJ?

    The Jabba in ANH looks weak, smaller, and not as menacing at all then the Jabba in ROTJ.

    The Jabba in ANH got poked and looked scared while in ROTJ.

    What do you all think?

    Well, I think the fact that Jabba was a puppet in ROTJ accounts for most of the physical difference. I suppose it would be kind of difficult for them to make a CGI Jabba that really looked and acted like the puppet and still seemed natural at the same time. At least that's how I see it.

    As for a difference in character, well, I guess it's a matter of one's personal point of view.

    Jabba wasn't in ANH until the special editions--they created a CGI version of him that looked almost nothing like the ROTJ Jabba. LucasFilm then redid Jabba for the DVD set to make him look like he was in TPM.

    And, storylinewise, I guess Jabba became fatter and lazier between AHN and ROTJ.

    Edit: A Hope New? What was I thinking? 8-}

    There is an explanation for Jabba's size change in the Essential Guide to Alien Species: it says Hutts experience a massive growth spurt at a certain point in their lives. The growth spurt also increases their ego and greed, and a quote from Han says something to the effect of: "Jabba used to be a pretty cool guy. That was before he grew so much. Sometimes I think if Jabba hadn't have had his growth spurt, he would have let me out of the carbonite, given me a tongue-lashing, and let me go." I paraphrase.... It is a decent explanation as to why Jabba seems like an anemic weakling in ANH but a huge, slimy bastard in ROTJ.

    To me, TPM Jabba looks a lot like RotJ Jabba. And he looks like a real being. ANH Jabba has always looked out of place. He's too small in both versions, in the SE version he looked extremely fake, and while it's a huge improvement in the DVDs, he still looks off. He's too dark (in TPM he was really pale, and in RotJ he was more brown; ANH Jabbas looks green almost).

    I think, aside from some minor details like the size of his eyes and the color of his skin, the DVDs are as close as we're gonna get to a Jabba that fits in with the other models.

    Just out of curiosity, when was that published exactly? (Before or after 1997?)

    After the SE came out (as it's obviously a continuity fix to explain the changes in Jabba between the SE and ROTJ). '98 or '99 I believe.

    It's strange - I felt that the new, re-done A New Hope Jabba looks like The Phantom Menace Jabba, but not like Return of the Jedi Jabba, who I think does look like TPM Jabba.

    They did a really good job fixing it in the DVD if you ask me. The OG SE was garbage though, he didn't look as stoned as he does in Jedi, and he's too svelt. That's what ya get hittin' the hookah and eating frogs for 20 years.

    Someone explain to me how ANH Jabba is too small? Especially in the new DVD. If you watch ROTJ footage, you will see when humans stand next to Jabba they are usually a few inches taller than him. Take a look at scenes when they surround him on his dais. The puppet was under six feet high, but it was on a nearly 3 foot high dais.

    Jabba is a slug. He probably doesn't have an epidermis exactly like we do. It's quite likely he changes colour depending on his dietary habits and so on. Maybe sun exposure too, who knows?

    He was might ligher in TPM and then he's darker in ANH and 10 years later or whatever in ROTJ he's been living a different sort of life and has changed colour again. I don't believe it's a continuity problem, I think it's just something that his race goes through.

    I never heard about the growth spurt thing before. That's pretty interesting.
