Of course the obvious answer is that he's Leia's brother. But that's personal. What about strategic?

I'm guessing Leia knew, due to her son's turn to evil. that the dark side was rising and rising fast and Luke was the last and most powerful Jedi and was needed for that very reason.

If I just completely answered my own question and there's no need for further discussion then I guess there's no need for this thread. But if there's more to it, discuss.

A new generation of Jedi would be pretty handy in a fight.

Maybe at one point Luke did something very powerful with his abilities and that's what they want Luke to do again. Otherwise I see no reason why the resistance wants to find Luke and why Snoke is afraid of him. [face_dunno]

Because Luke is the only one that can stop Snoke. He is the master this time around. Rey is the apprentice just like Luke was in the OT.

He's probably the most powerful being in the galaxy, given the Snoke is afraid of him. And even if he is weaker than Snoke you wouldn't want to fight ageist him or against anyone he trains.

he must be the most powerful warrior and skilled pilot in the whole galaxy.

    is that not enough?

I see a ep 3 scenario where Yoda goes for sidious and obi wan for vader...

now its luke vs snoke and rey vs rent

however I really hope we find more force users in both sides. Its almost sure there are more knights of rent. Not so sure about the jedi.

I suppose it's all about balance. If the Sith are active, you need Jedi to fight them. The Resistance can defeat conventional First Order forces, but defeating those skilled in the Force is something only the Jedi can do...

Where are you guys getting that Snoke is "afraid" of Luke? I'm not challenging that, but I didn't pick that up exactly. Snoke definitely doesn't want the Resistance to find Luke, and I'm sure he views him as a potential threat, but I didn't get that he was scared of him. Presumably Snoke and Kylo Ren want to find him so they can go kill him.

I have heard the theory, and it is at least possible, that Luke *is* Snoke. The hologram of Snoke may be a complete misdirection and he may look nothing like that. Thus "Snoke" not wanting the resistance to find Luke is actually Luke, himself, not wanting them to find him. I don't really buy into this theory, but it is at least possible at this point. Han and Leia definitely didn't speak of Luke with reverence in TFA. What happened with Ben could be enough for them to think of Luke in somber tones, but there could be more to it.

Leia knows personally the Sith are back at the helm of the First Order. So they will not be defeated without the Jedi.

users of the dark side of the force is pretty much the same dont you think?

the use the dark side, they dress in black, they use red blades.

    she got the message.

(by the way "sith" per se was never used in the old trilogy)

bottom line: the dark side is back. whatever they call themselves.

think of it this way.....it's like why did leia want to find Obi Wan Kenobi in the first place? Because she knows she's up against strong forces that can only be defeated with help of strong forces. Assuming that Luke is a really strong force user by now (if not the strongest) im sure he will help in defeating Snoke.

They need a Jedi warrior cause its Star Wars. Kylo being Leia's son I doubt is common public knowledge, she still wants her good son Ben back - although him killing Han could've changed her mind , however we get no dialogue when Rey and Leia hug. Luke losing his students to his nephew and Snoke I question Luke's abilities, especially as he's hiding out in a hermitage sanctuary to escape the galaxy he lived in and left behind. It is clear he's the last of the Jedi. Luke looked like a broken man when Rey found him, so he's gonna need to get back into Rocky Balboa shape to try and defeat the Sith-like menace in the galaxy or die trying along with their Imperial army.

I'm just sick of the revisionism spun by some Sith fanboys that everything about the Sith as we know them today except for the prophecy is an OT concept when in the fact the term "Sith" isn't in the OT.

Was just thinking about this. It seems like the First Order has decided to make it's move. Leia has been looking for Luke a long time, but it seems that as the FO makes its move, thee really is a need for someone to oppose Ren and Snoke.

He fought for the Rebels, blowing up a Death Star. Then stories about him defeating Vader and Palpatine go around and over the next 30 years the resistance and the republic learn he is a Jedi, and is training more Jedi to help the republic and fight the remnants of the empire..
Not sure why they wouldn't want his help. Ever played SW Battlefront? The heroes sure do help win those battles. Lol

Wow way to be aggressive. He might be right, Snoke might have a connection to the Sith.

Also as he said Dark Side User, Black clothes, red lightsaber. It's easy for people to think of them as Sith (as I saw many reviews call Kylo a Sith).

One of those "you must be a blast at parties" joke really applies here.

Actually, the term is in the OT, though it isn't a word that gets spoken in the movies itself. It was in the early story-designs, it comes up in the book adaptions, it is spelled out in the scripts that were used to shoot the movies as a descriptive term, etc. No one said the words TIE-Fighter, Y-Wing or B-Wing in the OT either, yet they definately are from that trilogy.

Though I have no idea why anyone would think that everything about the Sith apart from the prophecy came just from the OT, that whole thought makes little sense.
