This is the only thing about Star Wars that I cannot for the life of me figure out! A true mystery.[face_thinking]

I know, right?! Since when do they make super battle droid heads that big? And with mounted laser canons! And missiles!

Considering Slave I came first, a better question might be why the super battle droid head was based on it?

At any rate, at least one of my reference books says that the top of a streetlight in the ILM car park was the basis for Slave I's design. How true that is I don't know..

Since Slave I came first, it should be asked:

Why is the super battle droid head a mini version of Slave I?

I just think they're aesthetic similarities. Nothing more.

    It's a quite hulking and menacing shape. That's why, I'd guess. :p

I agree with ShaneP that it is more an aesthetic similarity than anything else. However, I did love the design of both the Slave I and the SBDs.

    "Design
B1 battle droids' heads were designed to imitate the shape of a dead Neimoidian's skull. In this way, they were intended to strike fear into an enemy's heart.[4] In addition, their bodies vaguely resembled those of the Geonosians. "

"Some people mistakenly believe the Slave I's design was inspired by a lamp post outside the ILM building. But Nilo Rodis-Jamero, an art director on The Empire Strikes Back, said that his design for the Slave I was actually based on a radar dish. It was later on when the ship was being constructed at ILM that someone pointed out that it resembled a street lamp, and from then on people just assumed that that had been the original source of the design."

Its just a coincidental simple shape. The General Grevious idea came from a spray bottle and also looks similar.
