Ever wonder why Han took off chasing the stormtroopers on teh death star? I've wondered about this for years. I"m assuming it was pure adrenaline pumping through his veins, but at the same time, if you're trying to escape, why chase the bad guys?

    Greatest scene ever!

Because Han's that kind of guy. The bigger the odds against him, the harder he fights. Twenty stormtroopers or a hundred, he's going to draw a blaster and run right in. Plus he was drawing them away from Luke and Leia so they'd have a better chance of getting away.

another question would be: Why did the troopers run in the first place?

good point IH2 there was no need to run there was one Han against like 10 troopers. Why were they running? maybe they were leading him into a trap coz if i remember rightly doesnt han run back coz there are more troopers waiting

The fugitives' legend had grown in the telling. Think of it: they went from trapped in the detention hall to being crushed in the compactor to alive and well.

If I were a 'trooper, I'd be like, "Who the hell ARE these guys? So the crew are already on edge. And then all of a sudden, there they are! And the one guy who decides we could take 'em is the first one to go down? And we barely outnumber these freaks? Hell with this; we need backup!!!!"

    He could have been!

No, their saying just happens to have particular relevance to this thread. The troopers fled because Han dared to fire and run at them.

That and he did have a large wookiee behind him (and the troopers didn't realise they were only being chased by one man... but a party of four)

Just a joke. Sorry, but as the smilies aren't working I've got no way of conveying that.

Oh no, I knew you were joking. Hence my 'he could have been!' response.

I just thought I'd explain the comment in case someone really didn't understand what I was saying (you never know).

my question as to why did the troopers run is the whole reason Lucas changed that scene in the special editions. They run right towards their backup in the landing bay. It still was silly for them to run in the first place in the original and new versions, IMO.

I think the idea in the original conception is that Han raised up such a ruckus the troopers thought they were outnumbered. When Han ran then into a corner they turned and realized that it was just two guys making a lot of noise.

Han chased them because he's crazy.

The Stormtroopers ran because they're retarded.

    'Nuff said :)

The troopers ran because they're soldiers.
In the mind of a soldier, the only way a person would ever charge is if they are confident that they will win. In this situation, it is reasonable for the troopers to assume that since some guy and a wookiee are charging them, then they have the troops and power to back it up.

As for why he does it, well, he is doing it to buy time for Luke and Leia to get to the ship. He actually says that in the movie. Ever seen it?
