What does that name come from? It sounds exactly the same as Tuscan--a region in north central Italy, where lies Florence, Siena, Pisa, etc. Is Lucas trying to make some kind of connection or analogy? Do they eat a lot of pasta? What is up with that? Tuscany is famous for great Renaissance art, etc., do the Tusken raiders have an artistic side that didn't come across in the films?

Lucas used lots of existing cultures and other things. Nubian (as in the Naboo cruisers) was also a culture in Ancient Egypt.

Mandalore is right. If you have ever played Star Wars Galaxies, it explains it. The Tusken Raiders raided Fort Tusken and took it over early in Tatooines settlement and that's where the name came from.

Was Fort Tusken the home of Renaissance painting, sculpture, architecture and poetry on Tattoine?

    Fisto,
those other names don't mean anything on Earth, but Tuscan does. Usually when Lucas chooses a Earth name, it means something, like stormtrooper, that was the name of the Nazi SS in WWII. So if they sandpeople were called Saudis, that might make sense, they are from the desert, but Tuscans are from a nice temperate mediterannean climate, so it doesn't make sense. Deal with that.

Tatooine is actually named after a road or area in the region of Tunisia where the Tatooine scenes were shot. Can't remember which, but I do remember being astounded by the similarity of the name when I first saw it in some The Making of Star Wars documentary.

    From the OS:

Tatooine colonists had already established a number of communities on the desert world before running into the Sand People. One such outpost was Fort Tusken, northwest of Mos Eisley. The settlers inadvertently constructed their fort on land sacred to the nomads. The resulting Sand People attack was brutal. The name Tusken Raider, along with their fearsome reputation and the Sand People-outlander tension were indelible outcomes of that bloody day.

It has NOTHING to do with Tuscany ok, NOTHING!

Lucas had to come up with the name "Tusken", so whether it is Fort Tuscan or not, the name still comes from Tuscany (or maybe the Oakland Raiders--Darth Al Davis was Sidious's Sith Master!!!!).
