All the other locations in the movie were named, but not Vader's. It visually looks to be a reference to Mustafar, but it also does not look particularly volcano-ish, like Mustafar was. And if it was Mustafar, why would they not label it as such? My daughter thinks they didn't label it because it, along with the castle, are maybe from McQuarry concept art, which may not have had a planet or location name?
It has been officially confirmed by Pablo Hidalgo on twitter that the volcanic planet with Darth Vader's castle is indeed Mustafar. They probably didn't show its name because they wanted to keep it a surprise that Vader would show up here. Otherwise it would have ruined the surprise. At least that's my guess.
I think it was perhaps an attempt at making Vader's reveal a little less telegraphed. But I doubt that putting "Mustafar" at the bottom of the screen, the way every other location was heralded, would have made much difference. The next shot after the establishing shot is of a limbless wretch in a bacta tank. I gather it is named in the novel (then why not in the film?). And P Hidalgo has confirmed, unequivocally, that it is. So be it. I'm still prepared for it being some place else later on down the line. ROTS gave an impression that the planet was so chocked with ash and smoke from the volcanic activity that it created a permanent night-time. But it looked like there were blue skies and in the establishing shot. Personally, I would prefer it if little mysteries like that weren't confirmed by chaps like Pablo the moment the film comes out. Leave it a few months. Let the ambiguities brew up for a while. Let us make fools of ourselves with cockamamie ideas.
If it was so recognisably Mustafar to fans, then it was a waste of time keeping the location title off screen. I thought it actually drew attention to itself the way it departed from the scene setting that had been established up to that point. I'm sure that 95% of audiences were waiting for the Darth Vader introduction scene. And it's fair to say it was due if not overdue by the time it did happen.
It's not named because it needs to be compatible with more than one version of the SW Saga. Mustafar wasn't always named Mustafar, and Leia wasn't always a brunette.
Well, it's made explicit by the Art of book so the horse would have bolted anyway. It doesn't get a card in an attempt to make the Vader reveal more of a surprise. Personally I would have been more delighted with the card.
As people have said, other planets incl the one in the opening of the movie weren't named either. So no biggie.
Would have loved to have seen the card. Only hardcore fans would recognise the name, and we knew Vader was going to make an appearance anyway, so it would have hardly ruined the surprise.
True, but it'd be an additional piece of work for the editors. Depending on what cut of the film, it'd have to say either "Mustafar" or "Condawn".
Not everyone reads art of books or novelisations. I'm fairly sure the intent was to not telegraph Vader's appearance (about ten seconds later). But a) Who knew Vader would have a castle on Mustafar? b) was it really a surprise? If Pablo and the novel hadn't shut the door on it then it could have been left open for other films. The actual location of Vader's lair was not relevant to the plot, unlike the ones that were given title cards, including Yavin even though we already know the rebel base is hidden there.
I was looking for little droids scooping up lava. If you know about Mustafa, you would recognise it pretty easy.
Vader having a castle on the lava planet is not really a surprise - that was Lucas's original idea. Back in 1975, the "Battle of Condawn" was where Vader's Sith Legions defeated the remaining Jedi. By the time of the prequels, however, the infamous "Lava Duel" had been cut down to Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Vader mano-a-mano, the outcome of which had a rather different emphasis.
Most likely. I'd like to think that Vader has a number of residences, including this castle, his castle on Vjun, and his palace on Corsuscant. But that's just me, an old EU fan. I like the idea of Vader having a castle on Mustafar because he uses his pain to enhance his anger and hatred and therefore his power in the dark side. Thematically, it's comparable the scene of Magneto briefly looking at the coin in the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past. It's a reminder of why he is the way he is.
Because there was literally only ONE lava planet in the whole franchise -- Mustafar. We don't even need to see the droids mining the lava to know that the reddish planet of fire and death was Mustafar.
