I've been pondering over this question for a while but can't find a reasonable answer. Why would dooku order Jango to kill Padme if she's AGAINST the formation of a republic army? Well, if you consider the fact that Dooku is actually Sidious's "associate" then he'd have the same motives as sidious does...but can't Nute Gunray think sensibly? He's asking dooku to kill off one of the people he should be "supporting" the most- a person against the creation of an Army of the Republic which would be a danger to the seperatists. Where is the reason in this?

And the thing that baffles me most of all is the fact that we are from the start led to believe the someone wanted to kill her to prevent her from voting on that crucial subject, which isn't exactly true. Plus, why does Padme even suspect Dooku? As the leader of the seperatists, how does her objection to creating a republic army hurt him?

Gunray does not know he is still working with Sidious. Remember the Dooku/obi wan scene where dooku says gunray was abandoned by sidious. Gunray does not know of any connection between Sidious and Dooku.

Sidious and Dooku want the clone army for when they are in control of the republic, so while Palpatine wishes to build the clone army, he needs padme taken care of.

Well for one thing the sith want an army. They need an army for the clone wars to happen. Remember they play both sides of the fence. So taking people out who are against it certainly would help.

From the Seperatists point of view, Padme would be useful to them with her anti-army stance.

But of course, Dooku is not really interested in what's best for the Seperatists. They're being played for fools.

As for Padme suspecting Dooku, I think it was something to do with the miner disputes on Naboo or something...it was covered in better detail on the Holonet News, does anyone have any quotes from that?

Because He wants the Army to Kill the Jedi. Don't forget that Plaptine is behind this plot too. He is Darth Siduoes.

They need 2 armies to start the war like Ret sort of said.

Padme would have stood in the way of this army being created.

But once Sidious' new plan went into action (ie: Anakin protecting Padme, Obi-Wan off to Kamino) it didn't matter if Padme died or not. The wheels were in motion.

For Sidious it's better if she stays alive for awhile...(Anakin ;) )

This explanation is assuming that Palpatine is Sidious. Dooku and Sidious are working together. Dooku is not going to kill anyone who is for the creation of an army because they are voting the way Sidious wants. He can kill Padme, which will accomplish a number of things: 1) anger citizens of the Republic enough for them to want an army to fight the separatist terrorists, 2) get rid of an opposing vote in the Senate and 3) make Nute Gunray, who's not too bright, happy.

Nute wanted Padmé dead as revenge for what she did to him ten years ago. Dooku didn't care.

And killing her would have made it easier to get an army made judicially if they had to.

Don't forget that Obi-Wan found the Clone Army and then the Sepratist Headquarters on Geonosis by following Jango Fett, the assasin who tried to kill Padme. I think Sidious and Dooku wanted Jango to be traced back to Kamino and Geonosis...

Sidious needs a war to get his Clone Army. But he will not get anything, until the Republic is under threat(It is the Republic that willgrant or not grant an army to Sidious). He needs to convince the Republic, that Dooku and the Separatists are dangerous. And now an assasinated attempt, against a prominent member of the Senate, will mean war.

The plot gets pretty convoluted, but what people have said in this thread so far does make sense. The basic thing to remember is:

Sidious gets Dooku to stage this whole separatist thing so that the Republic will have a reason to use the army that Sidious has been building up since The Phantom Menace events. In our own world history, leaders have often made up threats that needed to be "dealt with" and thus would give them the means to become dictators because part of "dealing with the threat" means having a huge army, and throwing away democracy, etc. Hitler did it in Germany in the 1930's, for example. There are some that believe that Pearl Harbour was allowed to happen so that America would declare war on Japan, and by extension, its allies, Italy and Germany. Some crazed conspiracy theorists even think this is true of 9/11, that it was at the very least allowed to go forward, or was even staged! (I think those claims are sick and ludicrous, myself).

Dooku wanted Padme out of the way because it was a condition for the Trade Federation's co-operation.

Dooku wants to combine the Trade Federation droid army with the Techno Union's Battle droids to form an army that would 'overwhelm the Jedi and force the Republic to bow to their demands'.
