In both the O-OT and 2004 versions of TESB it seems that Vader had always planned to destroy the Emperor with Luke by his side, should he join.
Why would he want to freeze him in Carbonite, though? To make his transportation easier?

Had he successfully delivered Luke to the Emperor, wouldn't he lose his window of opportunity of making him his apprentice, before the Emperor gets the chance?
Surly he was aware of Palpatine's plan to have Luke destroy his father.

I would have answered . . . to deliver Luke to the Emperor. But as you had pointed out, that contradicts Vader's plan that he and Luke take out the Emperor. Even worse, he tried to freeze Luke before he revealed his intent to destroy Palpatine. So, I'm a little confused right now.

Vader's original plan was to deliver Luke to the Emperor, turn him to the dark side, then dispose of the Emperor.

I don't think Vader really knew what he wanted. I think that he wanted both to serve Sidious and also destroy him at the same time, which made is actions as contradictory as his intentions.

There's nothing contradictory about Vader's plan to carbon-freeze Luke for transport to the Emperor.

In order to meet and speak with the Emperor, Luke would have to be unfrozen at some point. Vader might have revealed his paternity at that point. With Luke weak and blind from the carbon sickness, this might have been an opportune moment for the revelation. The subsequent meeting with the Emperor would have then transpired in a similar fashion as to what actually did occur on the Death Star 2.

I agree with this. Vader coveted Sidious's knowledge, but wanted to forge his own peace on his own terms. I think that is how Sidious managed to keep him on a leash.

I've always thought the whole carbonite freeze thing was a little odd.

"Freezing" someone in carbonite sounds and looks an awful lot like encasing them in metal.

When Lando says has is "alive...and in perfect hibernation" I want to say, "Well, of course he's not. He's dead!"

Why not just lead Luke into a room and release knock-out gas or some such thing. Sort of like what Nute Gunray tried in TPM except don't open the doors after 10 seconds. After Luke is unconscious, start an IV drip of a sedative.

Because it is notoriously difficult to ensure that a Jedi stays where you put him. Freezing in carbonite or suspended in a Force-inhibiting field (such as what Obi-Wan was in in AOTC) are some of the more reliable ways.

For his journey to the Emporer.

Seriously, i think Vader's motivation is hard to get a handle on. GL claims that Vader wanted Luke to help him destroy the Emporer, and yet in ROTJ he stops Luke from hitting the Emporer with his lightsaber.

There is another, new thread questioning Vader's motives in blocking Luke's saber. Either Vader was biding his time, waiting for the right moment (when Luke had slipped farther toward the Dark Side) to try to unite with his son against Palpatine, OR Vader knew the Emperor was not without his own defenses (see ROTS) and he HAD to block the strike or else the Emperor would have been extremely angry with Vader.

Technically, if Vader hadn't blocked, the last sentence should have been

he HAD to block the strike or else the Emperor would have been extremely cut in half.

Seriously thought, I think Vader knew that even if Luke struck the Emperor down, it wouldn't mean that he would instantaneously be turned to the Dark Side, Anakin killed Dooku similarly, but still didn't turn to the Dark Side a few days/weeks later after more prodding from Sids...

Thing Vader should have considered, if Luke turned to the Dark Side, with Sids guidance, who would emd up in the worst position, Vader or Sidious, would Luke kill Vader, the man who destroyed Obi-Wan, or Sidious, the man who has not really down anything bad towards Luke personally...

If you remember, he didn't drop the fact he was Luke's dad until after he had tried to freeze him. And my impression was always that it took Vader a while to accept that Luke WAS his son. Maybe the idea had just come to him while they were dueling?? He saw he wasn't going to win the fight easily so he dropped the informational bomb on Luke to throw him.

I also got hte impression that perhaps Vader just offered for the two of them to rule the galaxy as a way to entice Luke back to the Emperor.

I don't think that Vader ever really expected Luke to get frozen. The whole duel is Vader's test to find out if Luke is ready to join him to finally overthrow the Emperor. Luke passed when even as he lay defeated with his hand freshly chopped he still got up to at least retreat.

    Carbonite means he ain't escaping.

What if Vader had had Luke taken somewhere in hiding and taught him the darkside in secret telling Palpatine that Luke had been killed on Bespin?

Its probable the carbonite freezing process puts the victim in suspended animation. This isn't the same as death, as some animals in the wild go for months or years in this suspended state. Their body temperatures drop, their heart rates slow down almost to the point of stopping, and their metabolism, oxygen needs and food requirements are reduced considerably. But once they are revived, they return to normal. Carbonite does this by deep freezing.

If Vader was indeed wanting to overthrow Palpatine then it would be smart to freeze Luke. This gives the apperance that he's going along with his Master. And then after Luke is unfrozen he and Vader rip themselves of Palpatine,

So he (Vader) would want to sell as much as possible that he was on board with his Master since Palpatine was a pretty smart person.

Why couldn't Vader just knock Luke out with a karate chop to the neck? It worked on dozens of 1960s-70s TV shows.
