Anybody know anything about this shouting sound?

I call it the NutriGrain Shout of Pain. It is used on advertisments for a brand of breakfast cereal called NutriGrain.
    Argh Nutri Grain

I've heard it in a few TERRIBLE action movies, but I know nothing of it's background. (I used it once, because you can't have someone running around on fire without either a Wilhelm or one of these. And I'd already used two Wilhelms, albiet different shouts from the same Wilhelm guy).

So, does anyone know the history of this sound effect?

I don't really know the history, but here are some possibilities...

    Sledge Hammer
    Chain Saw
    Kitchen Knife
    Baseball Club
    Falling Piano
    Hemeroids

That's all I can think of.

They use that sound blatantly, with no modification, twice in "The Medallion." For two separate characters, within 15 minutes of each other, no less!

I've only heard that scream in two things: BROKEN ARROW, when Howie Long is kicked out of the bridge-crossing train, and DARK FORCES, whenever Kyle Kattarn falls from a high place.

But personally, nothing beats the Wilhelm. :)

This site used to have it, but it appears they've had to take it down. (It's gotta be available somewhere else on-line, though.) Here's another site that contains a list of films it's been used in.

if i'm not completely mistaken, the first place i recall hearing this scream (what you call the nutrigrain scream)in (though the effect was drawn out and overlapped a couple of times) was the scream of ultimate suffering from The Princess bride. it's also been used in several film trailers (modified, of course).

i should actually thank you, i've been looking for this particular scream for a while, as it's almost as noticable as the Wilhelm itself.

now all i need is the James Brown "HEY!" that for some reason is used as an element in alot of film explosions (i have no idea why)

*waves hand* you shall argue this point no more *waves hand* The Buliwif is wise and all knowing *waves hand* you will give me your lunch money...

Save as, it's big and clear.

EDIT: It's the scene up to and including the ultimate suffering scream, followed by your different scream. :D

Fig, you cut the sound just as the scream was starting... what's up with that? you can CLEARLY hear the scream starting before you quickly cut to the clean recording... *tsk tsk, Fig*

EDIT: what you are hearing in your sound byte is three distinct screams blended together. all three are variations of the same and most likely recorded during the same foley session. each lasts for a second and is then replaced by another which is blended in. the third scream, which you so conveniently cut off as it was starting, was the "nutrigrain scream" that this thread is about...

As it was starting? This whole time I thought you meant the main scream, the meat of it. It's not the one linked above (first post.) The loop when they are talking over it may be mixes of your scream, but the meat of it is a different file. It's Cary, from the set. Maybe a voice over, but I doubt it.

Just curious: how was this scream used in a NutriGrain? I've seen some and know I've never heard it, but what exactly is happening in the commercial that results in someone screaming it?

Brandon (Mac) brought up a good point to me last night. It sounds like a TIE fighter.

I've heard this scream a lot in ads for theme parks when people are shown screaming.

Not as cool as the Wilhelm. :p

I wonder if there is an official name for this scream. Or even an unofficial one.

And then there is "Wilhelm's sister" scream which is a commonly used woman screaming. Not just a regular scream that you'd hear in a horror movie, but a blood curling scream. The first place I heard this was in the Prince of Persia 2 game. It was the sound made by the Medusa woman when you hit her with the sword. It's actually a 3 part scream. The main one, with 2 additional grunting screams.
