I looked for a thread like this and I couldn't find it anywhere, so I decided to start one because WT really deserve this. :)

If you're not familiar with Within Temptation, then you have no idea of what you're missing. Here is some important information about them:

Biography: WT is a Gothic Metal band that is very popular in Europe. In 1996, Within Temptation was founded by Robert Westerholt and Sharon den Adel. 1997 saw the release of their first album 'Enter' on the Dutch label DSFA. Due to the positive media reactions the band was booked for four concerts and was also invited to play Dynamo, one of the largest Dutch festivals. Following their live gigs, interest increased to have the band tour and Within Temptation played some shows in Germany and Austria. The mini CD 'Dance' was recorded containing two remixes and three previously unreleased tracks. In 1999, Within Temptation took a break. The unexpected success had put the education of all band members on hold and they needed to finish what they had started. They also began to furnish their own studio. Their new album 'Mother Earth'was released on December 1st 2000. 'Mother Earth' was nominated album of the month in OOR, Aardschok and Music Maker. Aloha's review read 'symphonic and celtic elements fuse with the impressive voice of Sharon den Adel. Within Temptation are ready for a major breakthrough'. Most of 2004 saw the band working on new material for their upcoming album 'The Silent Force', which was released in November all throughout Europe. The album was recorded in Sweden, Russia, Belgium, and Holland.

    Discography:
    1997 - Enter
    1999 - The Dance
    2000 - Mother Earth
    2004 - The Silent Force

Well, then Cobranaconda, you have no idea of what you're missing! [face_mischief] The Silent Force is just awsome. It's a little heavier than Mother Earth, but it's still great. Sharon's voice really changed - for even better [face_batting] - she can do really high notes, now. There's no doubt that Memories, Angels, Jillian, and Jane Doe are great songs - they're so much more than just cool rythms, because they tell fantastic stories! =D=

The previous albums are even heavier, but I have to say Candles is the love of my life! [face_love] There's this awsome contrast between Sharon and Robert's voices which I call the Beauty/Monster contrast ( :p ) and it's great! They released a single Running up that Hill, which is an adaptation of Kate Bush's song, and it has this Mother-Earth-like rythm that is just fantastic! However, I can't find that CD anywhere!!! :_|

How about you, Laya? What's your favourite WT music/album? :)

I love "A Dangerous Mind". The song is just fantastic. And I like "Stand My Ground" too.

I don't have a favourite album, at least yet. :)

Yeah, "Stand my ground" is fantastic. ;)

I just bought "Mother Earth" and, Force!, I was absolutely astonished! Sharon's voice changed so much! I'm glad it did change.
The "Mother Earth" DVD is great. It has ME songs as well as "the Dance" and "Enter" songs. I wish I could go to a concert. They have such a great energy while on stage.
Now, "The Silent Force" DVD is the best. "Stand my Ground", "Jane Doe", "Mother Earth", Ice Queen", "Deceiver of fools", "Jillian", "Candles" and more are all there. Sharon's performance is awesome and her dresses are beautiful!!! =D= Great begining and middle, but I have to say - epic ending! Ice Queen is a great song to finish a concert.

Btw, I just found a new song - "Say my name". You can find it here. ;) More songs here and here.

    Good news people!!!!

Within Temptation have made special songs for a new MMORPG - The Chronicles of Spellborn. You can find a new video specially made to promote the game here, featuring WT's new song "The Howling".

Also, WT have already shot the new video for their forthcoming single "What have you done?". It was shot in Koko Club, UK and the fans had a chance to appear in the video doing what they do best - headbanging at the rythm of WT's songs. The new single will be available next January and the new album will come out in March.

    Finally some news!!! :)

I just finished watching the video linked above promoting the Chronicles of Spellborn - great to hear new stuff from them. I can't wait for their next album. Thanks for this news, Jadie!

I've got all their albums now, and I reckon Enter is my favourite. Probably because I'm more into the heavier stuff than I am the melodic. As for Silent Force, it didn't appeal to me that much, which is odd. It seemed too commercialised.

Ah! I love this band and have made many a music video using their songs. I don't find the vocals as strong as Tarja's in Nightwish (why oh why did they have to fire her?), but they work for the kind of songs that they do. My favorite WT songs are probably Ice Queen, A Dangerous Mind, and Dark Wings. Jillian is also amazing. I actually can't listen to Our Farewell because it's too emotional. Anyways, huzzah for a WT Fanclub!

Wow, some people finally noticed this thread! [face_dancing]

I understand when people say Enter is the best because it's heavier, but imagine this: the experience from Mother Earth + the heavy guitars from Enter + the excelent choirs and orchestras from TSF. Sounds good, doesn't it? That's what WT say the new album will sound like.

And good news for American fans - the album will be released on the States and WT will tour overseas!!! [face_dancing] Their new single features Keith Caputo (from Life of Agony) as a guest singer... but I think I already said that. :p

Oh, there's always the eternal comparision to Tarja's voice. I tend to like both - Tarja's more technical and Sharon's more emotional. I happen to think Sharon's singing is alot more difficult than Tarja's - it's easier to get off tune because it's so high. However, remember that Tarja studied singing and Sharon did not. She tought herself. Besides, even though Tarja's one of the best singers ever, I think that an operatic voice lacks emotion because it's too technical and the singer ends up forgetting that there is a meaning behind the lyrics. Just my opinion, though.

I think WT are different from any other gothic/rock/metal/celtic/whatever band because they have songs for every situation and about everything, they're different but not spooky ( :p ), and they know they have reached a high status in Europe because of the fans - they never forget the fans, they really interact with us in their shows, they are always up for meet 'n greets, and they have a fanclub day where they are with the fans, play with the fans and talk with the fans about everything.

    So, I think they're pretty cool. ;)

Tarja was too much of a spoiled brat to last in Nightwish. She was a good singer, but she persisted in being the diva, which alienated the rest of the band. At least Sharon is close with the rest of WT.

Also, Sharon sounds like Kate Bush would if she were in a metal band :p

Yeah, it's a shame really. Hopefully they'll make the right choice for the new singer.

Let's stay on topic, shall we? However, let me tell you that you should also hear Tarja's side of the story and not only Tuomas's. :)

Well, she one of the main composers and song-writers... plus she has a daughter with one of the guitar players, so... yup, she is close to the rest of the band. :p

Have you hear WT's version of Kate Bushe's Running Up That Hill? It's even better than the original. :p
But yeah, she used to sound like Kate Bush, when Sharon used her "evil voice". But now, she's using softer tones, which is nice for a change. :)

I've actually heard Tarja's version of events (through Marcelo, of course), and it just gave more credence to Tuomas' version :p

But yeah, back on topic :p

Sharon sings high, but there's no note she hits that Tarja hasn't hit stronger. I'm just more impressed by Tarja's operatic vocals than I am by Sharon's pop vocals, and I do find the operatic more difficult, especially to get that kind of tone quality.

Anyways! I love that Within Temptation sings about all kinds of things. Their lyrics are so refreshing in comparison to the "my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" songs and all that crap.

LOL! Yeah, WT's songs have very powerful meanings... I think Pale was about someone contemplating suicide or something... [face_thinking]

I think WT's music is not something everyone likes at first - you have to grow into liking them. For example, when I first listened to them I just couldn't stand The Dance. It was too creepy. But now, I see a certain beauty in it. I think that's why people often like to classify them a Gothic Rock band - their music is about seeing beauty where is none.

So tell me, when did you first find out about WT? What was your fist WT song?

In the meanwhile, I was looking for a photo of Luna to post here...

WT is a pretty good band, although not my favourite symphonic. I think their best songs are Mother Earth, Ice Queen and World of Make Believe.

I saw the trailer for a film called "Blood & Chocolate" (Which sounds like what Count Chocula might eat for breakfast) and it featured a song which I assumed was Evanescence. I came home and looked it up and it was this band. The song was Stand My Ground.

The movie had a strong Underworld vibe (Maybe Underworld 90210) and I think it's made by the same people. From what I've read, fans of the book feel that they've changed the story quite a bit.

Anyway, the movie stuck with me because of the odd title and the song. Not typically my thing, but pretty good stuff.

Stand My Ground is one of their most "radio-friendly" songs. Personally, I prefer songs like Jane Doe, Ice Queen, The Promise, Aquarius, Deep Within, etc. But WT is one of those bands that to can listen to in any situation. It really depends on the mood.

Oh no, please. Not Evanescence. Both are great bands, but their styles are so different. Apparently, people who aren't familiar with neither of those bands think they are similar, but they're not. WT write about life, about fairytales, about the world. Evanescence focus on people and their emotions. Besides, WT use alot of celtic influences and, until now, I have never heard an Envanescence song with those influences.

It was a 20 second clip in a movie trailer... Not exactly enough time to discern if they were singing about human emotions or fairytales. They sounded sonically similar to me, but then again I'm not very sophistimacated [face_monkey].

Oh yes! The Promise! Holy crap, I love that song.

I hate how every rock/goth/what have you band with a female lead is compared to Evanescence, as though Evanescence created the idea.

The thing I love about Within Temptation is they sing about the kind of things I'm interested in. For instance, my favorite genre of movies are the epic battle type movies, so I love songs like Stand My Ground, Foresaken, and others. I mean, it's just refreshing to listen to lyrics that are about something other than wanting sex, having sex, being angry about not having sex, etc. etc. and so forth.
