One of the things that turned me off of the Legacy Comic Series is the lack of a Wookie. Come to think of it, there's been a lack of them since NJO. So, where are they?

Perhaps Jan doesn't like drawing Wookies?

Edit: "Like" isn't the right word here. She has so much detail in the drawings that if you added a Wookie can you imagine how much longer we'd have to wait for the next comic to come out? Think of all the fur!

I love LEGACY, but I agree; I'd like to see some Wookiees. I'd like to see a mean pirate-y type Wookie with a snaggle tooth and an eyepatch. Or, no, how about a pimp Wookiee!!!

Isn't there a Wookiee who's suppose to be returning from Republic?

Or did I just completely make that one up?

    EDIT: Yeah, Chak was.

Hey, yeah, that could be cool! (But not a Jar Jar the doofus type of lifedebt.)

There were Wookiees in issues 0 and 3.

Honestly, what would a Wookiee bring to the plot? Who cares about adding in a stock character we've seen a thousand times before?

Agreed. It seems like every single Wookiee has some sort of Life Debt.

Make it a female Wookiee, make her Cade's new love interest, and now we're getting somewhere original. She can compete with Queen Jool, Deliah, Astraal Vao, and the Princess for Skywalker's affections. [face_mischief]

Man, I feel like a doofus; I completely forgot that Chewie owed Han a life debt. It's been a long time since I read those novels!

More proof that Star Wars is narrated in-universe by a massive racist (see the stereotypical portrayals of aliens for more cases of this). "Look at the Wookiees with their primitive customs; they acknowledge human superiority as the Master Species. Good Wookiees know their place."

Wait, if as Lucas says R2-D2 is the one who tells the saga to the Whills, what does that say about him? We know many Naboo were biased against the Gungans, and they more or less raised him...hmmm, I may be on to something here.

How can one be racist against races that don't exist???

How can people be so oblivious to irony and wit? ;)

It's a good point, though, Hydronium. You could say the same thing about the Twi'leks... the sluts practically deserve to be slaves, and the males are definitely a bunch of treacherous merchant slime. Good thing they can never measure up to humans - except in sluttiness and sliminess and merchants. There's a good topic: idiotic stereotypes in Star Wars. (Not like it's terrible about it, to be fair, but it definitely does do it... and kudos [surprise!] to Jan and John for being some of the best at breaking out of those.)

R2 thinks species who offer life debts are stupid primitives? I love it!

Kinda throws that ESB line where 3P0 yells at R2 because "Chewbacca can fix the hyperdrive!" into a whole new light. He knew that smelly primitive wouldn't be able to fix the ship, so he had to do it himself. He couldn't just have Threepio tell Chewie what he learned from the Cloud City computers.

Yikes! Sorry, I thought he was being serious.

I guess I'm sensitive to these sorts of discussions because it drove me crazy when people said that Jar Jar and/or the Neimoidians represented racial stereotypes. How?! They're not real!

I do think that most scifi/fantasy authors use sterotypical alien or "other" type characters to examine human character traits in general, though, not to say that any particular race in the real world is one way or another.

For example, Twileks, as the exotic dancer race, are a pulpy, broad stroke of the brush used to illustrate a particular human character trait in an exaggerrated fashion; not a statement that there actually are races in the real world that are more promiscuous or sensual than others. You know what I'm saying? Its okay to use fake races as demonstrations of human personality types in the context of scifi/fantasy; in fact, I think that scifi/fantasy depends on those kinds of devices to get its point across.

Why do we need Wookiees? Why are people hung up on recycling the same stale, stock visuals and story elements?

"Ooh, it's not Star Wars without an X-wing!"

"Oh man, KOTOR would suck without finding another Wookiee sidekick to lamely stuff into your party!"

"Come on, it can't really be Star Wars unless there's a Han Solo pastiche involved!"

"Star Wars stories all have to have Jedi! If it's PT, Jedi who break with Order traditions and secretly fall in love, just like every single other PT Jedi!"

"There's got to be a darksider for the Jedi to get in awesome lightsaber duels with! Or else it's not really a good Star Wars story!"

"Somebody's got to have a double-bladed lightsaber or two lightsabers or it's not kewl enough!"

Um...WTH? Am I the only person who read Issue #0? Chak, from the Republic comic, is still alive and kicking and all grown up in Legacy, and will apparently be playing a pretty big role.

Seriously, I can't believe this thread got this long without someone mentioning that.

Yeah, I agree that comments like that are stupid. But I'm talking about in-universe racism - that is, it's the characters who write about it who are racist. To them, it is real, because, well, they're characters themselves.

I'm not so much tired of the Wookiees as I am of such a standard take on them. Take the Wookiees who form the backbone of the Rebellion: why don't we hear a lot about them? (I liked Trip's attempt for the Y-head corvette WTS to make it a Wookiee ship) We get lots of Wookiee individuals doing their own thing, but the idea that they do things as a unified people or have a government and society seems to be ignored. I have issues about the portrayal of many alien species, but at least some of them are treated as an actual structured society. With the Wookiees, most authors show them as just big intelligent dogs who rarely do anything in groups of their own species (for that matter, are they ever seen in a group off Kashyyyk?). Can you imagine an author including a ship crewed entirely by Wookiees? I bet they'd have to be escaped slaves or something, because Wookiees apparently can't do anything sophisticated on their own.

Well then they're my new best friends.

But is Chak a real Wookiee, do you think? What feats does he have to prove it? :p

Which is why Tyvokka is the best post-Chewbacca Wookiee character hands down.

Not just a Jedi Master - a Jedi Council member, who is seen as intelligent, cultured and wise.

    Plus...he doesn't walk around naked.
