Would you consider Speedy Gonzales to be a "politically incorrect" character?

Or, for that matter, his cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez??
Yeah, yeah, a really lame question, I know. But I just thought I'd throw it out there!

For the record, my answer would be a very loud, resounding NO. After all, our friend Speedy is an animated cartoon animal, and as such is exempt from the kind of behavioral standards we set for "regular" people.

In the immortal words of Dennis Miller: "That's just my opinion. I could be wrong!"

No... that is classic animation.. Maybe today, but that was made decades ago... they aren't included, I don't think so anyway.. they should be left alone..

Did that make any sense? :p

    Politically incorrect? Yes. Offensive? No.

In fact, it was a Latin American group who was largely responsible for those cartoons being put back on the air.

The people on Amazing Race learned most of their Spanish from Speedy.
    How can that be wrong?

I know the stereotyping of Native Americans is somewhat offensive:

?but the demeaning exploitation of blue hillbillies has got to stop!

I stand by the idea that anything created before the term "politically incorrect" should be exempt from being called that.

Instead of asking us, why not ask the award winning Cuban-American author Carlos Erie? He wrote the followig in his memoir entitled Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy:

"Mel Blanc, voice of Speedy Gonzalez and a thousand other Hollywood cartoons, may you burn in hell forever. As one of your damned Hispanic Warner Brothers characters might have said: "Si, senor, firrst I go to zee fiesta and zen I tayk-a siesta, beeforrre I go to anozzer fiesta again. Ole! Andale, andale! Arriba, arriba!

I take it back, Mel. Sorry, I got carried away. Hell might be too harsh a punishment for your sins. You must have been clueless, truly. Maybe a better place for you would be heaven, where you might be surrounded by lazy, napping, partying spics who talk funny. Here's a brand-new Spanish proverb for you, Mel Blanc, la indeferencia en bizca. Indifference is cross-eyed" (70).

    Mace Windy,
    windy, windier, windiest!

    =D= That's what I'd say to.

Too many things nowadays are shot down for being politically incorrect. There's a difference between being politically incorrect and being offensive.

I think it's silly that it's kept locked up... it's classic animation... sure by today's standards they are offensive (to some), but I don't think they should be locked away.. it's a piece of history.. it reflects those times.. It's almost the same as locking away history books... okay, not the same...but you get my point...

The thing that is really getting ridiculous is going back and editing classic cartoons and redoing some of the voices. Tom?s owner, the one whose legs you only see, no longer speaks the way she used to speak, which was along the lines of ?Thomas, Iza goin? in da kitchen and when I gets back, dis room betta not be awl messed up!?

    [image=http://www.tomandjerryonline.com/images/midnightsnack3.jpg]

They?ve gone back, re-recorded her voice and now she sounds like a Harvard grad. It may be up to today's PC standards, but it sounds just as ridiculous.

I frankly don't have an opinion here.

Although, frankly, I don't think it should matter whether anyone but Hispanic people find the depiction of Hispanic people to be offensive or not. How can you tell somebody else what they can and can't be offended by?

From what I've heard, most Hispanics don't consider Speedy Gonzales to be racist. As far as I'm concerned, that's good enough for me.
