Nougat (US: /'nu?g?t/ nu-g?t, UK: /'nu?g??/ nu-gah)[citation needed] is a variety of similar traditional confectioneries made with sugar and/or honey, roasted nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts and recently macadamia nuts are common), and sometimes chopped candied fruit. The consistency of nougat can range from soft and chewy to hard and crunchy depending on its composition, and it is used in a variety of candy bars and chocolates. well if you take the first part of the word, "nou", that is clearly a variation on the word "new". now, if you look closely at the second part of the word, "gat", one can see that it is derived from the french word "gateau" which means "cake". so what we're dealing with here is a new kind of cake injected right into your candy bar.
