Impossible? Not anymore, thanks to a patch that's just been released. You may find it at LucasFiles.com

Note: This patch also fixes the problem of the TIE Fighter launcher asking to have DirectX 5.1 installed if you have a later version of DirectX.

    Feedback appreciated.

Right on.... I've been wanting to fire up Tie Fighter for a long time. I could never get the other fixes to work for me for some reason.

Great news. I just re-installed these old games, so the timing couldn't be better!

Does anyone know how to set up the sound for these games. None of the options will let me detect my sound card. What do you usually do for these older games?

Are you sure you're running the Windows versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter and not the DOS ones? DirectX, which is used by the Windows versions, should automatically detect your sound card. The only way to run the DOS versions in Win2K and XP is to use an emulator such as DOSBox.

Alright here is my problem guys, hope you can help me. Everytime I try to install my Star Wars Tie Fighter, Collector's CD-ROM, Windows 95/98 on my XP Machine. Now I remember a while ago seeing that Direct X Error, so I couldn't install. But when I try now... I get this...

The Tab Reads "16 bit windows subsystem"

    And inside it says...
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. This system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to Terminate the application."

Then it only gives me the options to Close or Ignore. Then it freezes up. Is there anyway to workaround this? Please help me out guys. Thanks

Tie Collector's CD-Rom is DOS native. Win 95/98 had DOS included, XP does not, hense your problems.

    I have outlined a solution in this thread;

Holy heck. EASY configuration of DOS games in XP! (x-wing / Tie Fighter etc)

You won't get the "3D" that this thread refers to as that was only implemented in the later Re-release of TIE using the XvsTie engine.

Wildstar02301, thanks for sharing this with us. I just installed it and TIE Fighter looks pretty again.

Now if you'll excuse me, it's time to take down that traitor, Admiral Harkov. :D

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice.

I've installed the Win2k patch to allow XvT to run but I'm still getting the same error about installing DirectX 5. I've followed all of the instructions in the readme multiple times to make sure I didn't miss anything but still have the same problem.

    Any suggestions?

    Try doing this with the ddhelp.exe file;

    http://www.rebelsquadrons.org/classicgames/xvt.php

For XP though it'll probably be the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ you're looking to copy it to.

Let us know if it works...

That did it. Thanks for the link! :)

Okay, hopefully one last question. Does anyone know which ports Xvt & BoP use? I want to host some games but I'll need to get past my router first.

I'm not sure what ports XvT/BoP uses, but I know they're UDP ports. If it's just a cable or DSL router like I use, the ports may already be available for the game. If not, I'd try talking to your ISP's tech support people.

I hate to keep bugging everyone but I've run into another problem and am again out of ideas.

The first time I ran XvT, after running the updates needed for Win2k, I received an error that said CD music was unavailable. I forget the specifics of the message. So whenever I play the game sound effects work fine but I have no actual music. I've uninstalled the game, deleted the XvT directory from my HD and then reinstalled and I still have the same problem. The strange part is that the error has never popped up again since that first time.

If there was a problem with the installation or a problem because I am running Win2k then I would think that error would pop up each time I started the game. The fact that it doesn't leads me to believe that the game thinks the music will work and so it doesn't throw up the error.

I've checked other games and they work fine. I've checked the audio cable on my CD-ROM and it's hooked up and working. I'm stumped.

Has anyone else run into this problem before or know of a fix for it?

This is a great thread...I am going to have to dig up my old games now and play them again...I have been waiting for a good Star Wars first person flying game to be updated ever since these came out and to me, none of them have met the challenge. I am particularly disappointed with the XBOX Starfighter games...the controls on that were not great and I did not get the great feel I did when playing the old Xwing/Tie games that I was actually in an Xwing doing battle for the alliance.

I believe XvsTie uses standard music tracks straight from the CD*, whereas most games use audio data files.

I've had the same issue with Monkey Island 1, but there is a workaround for that.

I don't know of any solution to the problem for XvsT (the Monkey Island one won't work, trust me), though have you tried running the game from another CD drive (if you have more than one), as that may solve it.

*ie. If you put the game CD into an audio player, yo ucaould probably hear the tracks through your stereo.

The Patch Worked on my Xp computer without any problems!
I am now running Tie Fighter, which I could not even run before, and X Wing now has 3d, which it did not have before.
    Thanks a lot!
But it says something about what Lucasarts has become that a fan could do the patch, whereas Lucasarts could not be bothered to do anything but tell us that the games are incompatible with XP.....
