Does anybody have detailed pics, blueprints, or other documentation describing the interior of an X-wing, specifically the cockpit? I've got to model one in 3D and, short of the fairly obscured and tight-cropped shots of cockpits in the movies, I got next to nothing to work with.

It doesn't help that each time they release a game, the cockpit changes, either. But I'm trying to kick it old-school for The Last Remnants, so I need to re-create an X-wing cockpit from the OT...

Please help me, somebody...you're my only hope.

I would recommend studying the movies when they come out in the widescreen format.

It'll probably require a little creativity on your part.
And to be honest, no one's going to pull out a ruler and measure your cockpit to make sure it's perfect. As long as it looks right, then you're solid.

Maybe Trey can help ya out, he had a CG X-wing cockpit to some extent in the Pink Five movies.

I don't own it or else I would post some pics, but if you're up for spending a little something this book may have some pretty detailed specs.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. Like the old one, it just has the image of the ship and some detailed history and stories about the craft, but no interior specs.

Might wanna check out this thread on the SciFi3D boards. Not a photo reference, but not bad. Might even wanna get in touch with bobabert and see where he got his references.

Me again. Here's a pic from the official site of the actual cockpit set. I think the windows might be "cheated" to accomaodate the camera, but I used this as a start for my cockpit.

Edit: Here's a slightly better blueprint from the side, although no guarantee of accuracy.

Outlaw, would you happen to have a pic like your first one of a tie cockpit?

Plus, even a cursory examination reveals that the X-wing cockpit interiors were totally different in each movie.

Obviously, they only built a couple of cockpits for each movie (one installed in the full-size prop X-wing, and one for filming from inside the cockpit; parts may have been shared between the two), but I think it would be reasonable to infer that each "real" X-wing is just stuffed with whatever the Rebel technicians could lay their hands on to keep the thing flying.

Pff, that happened in the 80s, get with the times.

Anyway, I'd have to second the recommendation though, I wouldn't suggest waiting for the DVDs though if you want it to look old school. You might see some detail that's blurred in the VHS version and having it stick out may look odd. One thing you want to remember is it doesn't have to be EXACT. Just close enough so the audience can recognize it as an X-Wing. You save yourself less hassles and less costs this way.

Edit: Just realized you're doing this in CG. *sighs* When will I stop hoping that real props will be used again and just admit CG is here to stay, and look.... well, that's up for debate at another time :D.

Oh, more than that...I'm doing the entire fan film in CGI. Keeps the budget down. :D

Actually, that really is a concern; I'm pretty damn broke at the moment. Believe me, had I the cash I'd LOVE to do a live-action fan film, but on my budget I could never do it justice. Nor could I make the fan film cel-shaded/toon-rendered.

Hopefully I'll be able to afford those DVDs when they come out as right now I not only have no way to capture video off a VHS tape, but I don't even have a VCR...

Aww. My capture/TV tuner card only ran me $25, and it works great. And a decent VCR is cheap at pawn shops and Salvation Armies..

    Worth looking into, I'd think...

You don't quite get just how broke I truly am... I had to borrow $40 from my parents because i couldn't afford bus fare to get to the temp job that finally called me after two months of not sending any work my way. Wish I could get decent permanent work, but that's about as likely in this town as getting laid by your favorite celebrity...

Besides, I can capture screenies from DVDs with ease; spending money to capture video from a VCR just to have some photo-reference when for more or less the same price I can get the DVDs of the movies I need captured seems, well...dumb.

    Just sayin'...

    Oh. Ick.

I have many suggestions for getting money, but most of them can't be printed on this board without me being banned.

And hey, a VCR has it's uses, as does a TV tuner card! I saved a bunch of space in my room by eliminating my TV entirely and just using my compter.

Well, regardless, this doesn't solve the problem that, at the moment, I only have a few bits of photoreference for making an X-wing interior. Heck, if you watch the movies--or at least ANH--it's difficult to even get a good idea of what the X-wing control yoke looks like, let alone where the bloody throttle is!

Granted, I could solve that problem by not showing it at all, like Lucas did, but at the same time...ehhh... I'd like to make this darn thing somewhat accurate, if I can. This is for posterity, dammit! :D

The cockpit interiors and even the control yolks look different in every movie. Ive got a photo of a female pilot in an X-wing that is unused from ROTJ and apparrently in that movie the X-wings had Tie fighter style controls. (Sorta like a formula 1 style steering wheel.) Obviously this doesn't match the more traditional style stick seen in ANH.

    Crunchy
The only pic I have that is even close is a black and white pic that shows the cockpit from ANH. Unfortunately its a very small picture from the action figure archive and not very detailed. Plus it's got a pilot and an explosion in it. The best place for cockpit shots for a TIE would be to either do a bunch of screen caps from ANH, or check out this link

    http://www.theforce.net/swtc/tie.html

which has a lot of pics that I used.

Well, I can't wait for those DVDs to come out, now. Cashflow has ceased to be a problem for now--the Xbox testing people have assignments for me! Yay!--and I should be able to afford them when they come out. Then I'll be able to do freeze-frames and get some decent photo-reference.

    But thanks anyway, guys. :)
