I am currently thinking about getting the X-wing collectors series off of amazon.com. the series contains revamped versions of x-wing, tie fighter and x-wing VS Tie fighter. What I want to know before I get this is if it is playable on windows xp. Thank you for any information.

I don't know if you can find it still, but if you can get The X-Wing Trilogy pack instead. It has X-wing, Tie Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance. XvT isn't very good and has no story, while X-wing alliance has more of an enriching play factor.

It seems we don't have a new mod yet. So get out there and have fun.

Probably too late to comment, but TIE Fighter doesn't play on Windows XP very well.

I forget all the specifics, but you have to change the compatability mode to Windows 95/98, add in some kind of extra file, stand on your head while balancing a cat on your left foot and howl at the full moon to get it to run.

Just a note for future reference: the X-Wing Collector's Series versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter can be played on Windows XP and Vista (32-bit though, not 64-bit) with hardware 3D acceleration turned on by running Craig Perry's compatibility fix, which can be found on LucasFiles.

I'm trying to do the same w/ X-Wing. I've got the collector's cd, I've downloaded VDM sound and the compatibility fix from LucasFiles, however, I couldn't download the VDM Sound Launchpad. I clicked on the link and the page said "FORBIDDEN you do not have permission to access /~vromas/vdmsound/ on this server." Any way around this? Also, are there any downloads I'll need if I wanted to use a USB joystick?

You have a DOS version of the game (this thread deals with the Windows versions), and would probably be better served getting help on this thread.

Note: The compatibility fix mentioned only works for the Windows versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter from the X-Wing Collector's Series. They will not work with the DOS versions (there is confusion b/c the "Collector's CD-ROM" versions of both games are actually the DOS versions, while the "Collector's Series" is a bundle of both games along with "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Flight School" and are the Windows versions).

While the original Launchpad link given all those years ago is dead, I'm sure there a number of other places you could get it from.

USB joysticks - some work, some don't. You'll just need to try yours out when you get the game running, and if it doesn't work, do a websearch to see if anyone else has encountered it and found a workaround.

And as Wildstar says, the DOS version needs VDMSound/Launchpad, the Win version needs the compatibility fix.

It's a damn shame that this type of thread needs to be even posted. DOS games are hard to play on newer systms. *sigh*
