I think I'll see this movie for Samuel L. Jackson. That and the remote possibility that it could be good.

I'm more interested in XXX the rating.

"It was pretty good. Lots of explosions."

Sadly, this is how many people define a good movie these days.

There was more to it than just the explosions. I put in the explosions comment because I knew that was what a lot of people seem to look for in a movie. The plot had some interesting turns, and I was entertained throughout the movie. I thought it was a good movie. Is it good enough to see again? Probably not. Will I buy it on DVD? Again, probably not. Was it as good as AOTC? No. Did it have more explosions? Yes.

Vin Diesel is an '00's thick-headed version of Arnold Swarsaneggar (I tried!) who's almost as indecipherable. Seriously, the guy sounds like a retard with the personality of a lint-brush. I know dumb movies like this are geared towards 12-22 year old boys, and I'm no longer in that demographic, but I'm pretty sure I would've thought the same of Mr. Diesel (subtle name -BARF!) 8 years ago. All the whiteboy/rap/rock soundtracks in the world can't cover up the fact the guy is a moron. I saw an HBO special years ago about young directors , and Diesel was one of them! This moron directed a flick...maybe I'll search for a review on it...why bother? It was panned by the critics in the special.

Thank God they killed him off early in Saving Private Ryan. "Look sarge. Iss a Hitla youf knife!" I clapped when the sniper took him out. ;)

It was quite entertaining. The fact that my and I kept up a MST3K commentary the whole time helped of course. But nonetheless it was pretty good.

Of course, it was by no means a 4 star picture. Maybe 3 for its genre.

this movie was ok at best. fast and furious was much better. the story seemed confusing at times. i went with 2 of my friends. one liked it and the other thought it was horrible. i would likely lean toward the 2nd one

What I'm really looking forward to is that new action hero TEAM for Vin's next film,
BRAINS AND BRAWN. They're teaming up Vin Diesel with Professor Stephen Hawking to fight evil. Hawking will have a rocket powered wheelchair. Best team since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Hawking's main purpose will be provide believable explanations of how Vin can defy the laws of physics.

Here's an interesting review of XXX from the reviewer for the Arizona Republic.
It's pretty funny. His name is Bill Muller:

Now I know what XXX stands for:

    Xtremely Xcruciating Xperience.

This movie pushes the envelope all right - past barely believable to completely ridiculous. While such films require a certain suspended disbelief, XXX repeals the laws of physics and common sense, generating more laughs than oohs and aahs.

If director Rob Cohen was trying to assemble a new breed of spy movie, he definitely had a whole box of parts left over when he was finished. XXX plays like an extended music video, mostly an excuse to flit through a series of mindless action sequences.

Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious) stars as Xander Cage, a supposed extreme-sports athlete who's recruited to join a spy organization. Not once do we see Cage actually participate in his sport of choice, unless auto theft recently was added to the X Games.

That's too bad because he would dominate, given that gravity doesn't affect him. If he gets on a motorcycle, it immediately gains the ability to fly. He can ride a snowboard over a cliff, land on his feet and outrace an avalanche.

Oh, and he has a handy device that can see through brick walls, providing crisp color images of what's happening on the other side.

Why don't they just put a cape on the guy, call him Superman and be done with it?

My favorite part comes when Cage chases down a submarine - in a car - then jumps on top of it. Um, it's a submarine. So why doesn't it submerge, drowning our hero?

I also like the scene in which Cage is rescued from a sticky situation by someone who fires randomly through a door. Why didn't she hit him? Well, he is the star.

To keep us from asking such questions, Cohen spends the whole film deafening us with German speed metal, making our only thought: "Please, let this end."

As for performances, Diesel may be the first actor in the history of cinema to be outperformed by his tattoos. They emote more than he does. He's so wooden that he should be propped up in front of a cigar store.

In one fell swoop, the chrome-domed one has transformed himself from an underrated star-in-the-making to a bad Sylvester Stallone knockoff. In his other films - Pitch Black, Saving Private Ryan, The Fast and the Furious - Diesel's success relied on being a mystery man with a relatively small amount of lines. He seems ill-equipped to carry a movie by himself, washboard abs notwithstanding.

The supporting characters are straight from Action Movie Clichés R Us, ranging from the "I hate you - kiss me" femme fatale (Asia Argento) to the Russian master criminal (Marton Csokas) to Cage's enigmatic boss (Samuel L. Jackson), who has a big scar and lots of dumb lines.

Actually, it's surprising to see Jackson (Pulp Fiction) do something this shallow. I guess those Pebble Beach green fees really add up.

As for Cohen's ballyhooed special effects, they mostly play like James Bond rip-offs. I mean, haven't spies been skiing down mountains (Cage uses a snowboard) since On Her Majesty's Secret Service?

    Xactly.
