...but doesn't sense a sitting duck when he's in Palpatine's office. As Luke states in ANH, Tatooine is pretty far away from the centre of the Republic. Surely this must mean that Palpatine = not Sidious. Surely this means the thread will be locked in approximately 1.2 nanoseconds.

    "The Dark Side clouds everything"

Yoda can't sense Palpatine because the Dark Side his clouding his vision. On the other hand, Anakin hasn't completely fallen to the Dark Side, so Yoda can still feel his pain, similar to how Luke was able to feel Han and Leia's pain while he was on Dagobah.

"Surely this means the thread will be locked in approximately 1.2 nanoseconds."

If you thought it was going to be locked, why did you post it?

I assume Palpatine is blocking his Darkside pressence from being picked up, but I doubt Anakin was trying to hide any of his emotion when he was slaughtering the Tuskens.

I'd imagine this is a plot point for Episode III.

Yes, I think that's the point. Palpatine was probably using some secret Sith technique to hide his Dark Side presence (after all, the Sith remained hidden for a thousand years, so they must have had some way to hide their presence in the Force). Anakin, during the Tusken slaughter, wasn't able to hide anything, he wasn't even able to think of hiding anything (in the Force), because he was just flying in a complete and utter uncontrolled rage without thinking.

    According to Yoda:

"Hard to see the darkside is."

    "The darkside clouds everything."

"Only the dark lord of the Sith knows of our weakness."

"What the hell expect you when 900 years old I am, English perfect?"

Oh, wait, that last one is from MAD Magazine.

What I find interesting is that after the Yoda scene, we cut to Obi-Wan, who doesn't sense anything about the Tusken slaughter. 20 years later in ANH, he's able to sense the destruction of Alderaan. To me it shows that Obi-Wan's Force powers have grown over time.

Well, we also have to remember how big a difference there is between the event in AOTC and the event in ANH.

In AOTC Anakin kills about 30 tuskens, in ANH, billions of people are killed instantly. I think the destruction of Alderaan would be easier to sense through the force. But I still think Obi-Wan is stronger in the force by ANH, at least in the philisophical and attuned sense.

I think because they are special, it has been in Yoda's best interests to link up to the Skywalkers some how.

The PT example has been provided, I'll bring up the OT example. "This one, long time have I watched..." So, Yoda's been "watching" Luke, even though he's on another planet. I bought it then, and I buy it now. I don't deny that the dark side clouds and that Palpatine is one smart Sith, but on the other hand, I think it has a lot to do with Yoda has taken up interest in the Skywalkers, and justifiably so, since he is the leader of the Jedi and the Skywalkers are involved with this Chosen One business.

    Edit: spelling

I feel that the stronger in the force you are, the more you can feel and the more presence you emit. Im sure Anakin, when fully trained, will be able to sense more through the Force than Yoda. When he slaughtered the Tuskens he was sending vibrations out through the Force. Lukes does the same thing in ESB, so much so that Palps can detect him.

Yoda states many times that the darkside is clouding there vision, and the Sith have been hidden for a Millenia and yet the Jedi cannot detect them.

One thing that I don't think anybody has picked up on, and as this thread is sort of related to it, I'll bring it up now, but what if Anakin, being attuned to the Force, felt the pain and suffering of the Tusken Raiders? In Star Wars, Obi-Wan almost looks ill when Alderaan is destroyed, so one can assume that he felt the deaths of all those billions of people as mental pain, so what if Anakin felt the same when he mascared all those Tusken Raiders? Along with his own emotional pain at the loss of his mother, along with his hatred and angry towards the Tusken Raiders, coupled with him feeling their own fear and pain, it must have had a massive psychological effect on Anakin. I don't know if I made sense there, but does anybody see what I mean?

"I'd imagine this is a plot point for Episode III. "

    I agree.

If I remember correctly in the AOTC novel it is said that Yoda is probing the darkside when he hears "anakin anakin Noooooooo" and feels the pain so I don't know if this has anything to do with it.

I'll be very interested to see how this is handled in Episode 3, Lucas has dropped a couple of hints but nothing solid yet.

Oakessteve you have brought up an excellent point. It would really show Anakins hatred and power if he can still go through killing Tuskens if he can feel it. However, that said, if Anakin can feel the Tuskens could Obi-Wan feel Zam Wessels pain, or that Cantina fella's pain (I forget his name now)?

In ROTJ, Dark Vador said to the Emperor that he feel his son on the moon of Endor. Palpatine answer that he does'nt feel anything about it and was surprinsing and then he said he doubt about the sense of Vador. What it mean about the nature of Vador or Sidious sense? Maybe Luke was able to hide his feeling to Palpatine like Palpatine was able to hide is own from Yoda and Mace Windu?

Interesting point you've brought up Oakessteve.

Perhaps Anakin was unaware of unable to sense the pain of the Tusken Raiders merely because of the magnitude of his anger and the emotions he was experiencing in those moments. Almost as if the anger overshadowed them...

[color=336699]If the darkside 'clouds everything' (as Yoda stated) then the obvious answer would be that when Anakin was using the dark side to fuel his anger when he was slaughtering the Tuskens and it 'clouded' his judgement and feelings...he wasnt feeling anything...just rage.

Later though when he is restored to his regular self you can see him saddended and feeling remorse. It is at this time he is feeling there anguish...

At least that is how I look at it
    ;)

I dont believe the darkside itself blocks the lightside, I believe its something that you have to learn. After all Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan sensed that Maul was coming on Tatooine.

I always thought the disturbance they felt was because Anakin was near by. ?[face_plain]

Thats possible. But the way Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan about it makes it seem likes its a bad thing. Im assuming that if they had felt Anakin, they could have sensed that it was a good disturbance not a bad one.

Maybe Sidious allowed Yoda to feel Anakin's suffering. Something along the lines of opening that one window in the Force, or something like that.

Or maybe Yoda is just really good at farseeing (as it's called in RPG) and Palpatine has a really high Force Stealth modifier (again, from RPG).
