"You assume too much"

Interesting that it's used twice in the film, by different characters. Once by Nute Gunray to Amidala at the beginning and later by Padme to Qui-Gon right before the pod race. Do you think it's just a random thing or intentional by Lucas as a really subtle hint that Queen Amidala is Padme?

It's a pretty good way of hinting who she really is.

 

I don't remember it in the theatre but on the DVD its there. Likely GL wanted to give a hint about Padme. But there were atleast already two hints before that.

 

Yeah I think it was meant to be a hint. Kind of like the "we are brave" line by Padmé.

 

It's also a hint on Padme/Amidala's rebel attitude.

Anyway, the same thing happens in AOTC - First, Obi-Wan says "Possibly" to Anakin, then Jango says it to Obi-Wan.
Does this mean that Jango was spying on Obi and Ani in the beginning? Darn, that bounty hunter is good! And fast!!

I hope there will be a repeated line in EpIII as well. Stuff like this is what ties trilogies together.

 

Now, you could say nothing is something all you want, and thats fine, but i honestly don't think its any kind of hint. The confession that Padmé was using a Decoy came on its own accord. The line "you assume too much" was simply used to state facts in the movie.

That's one of the hints I was talking about and probably the most brilliant scene The next one (and awesome), Qui Gon's look back at Padme after he says "the Queen doesn't need to know". Pure class there!

 

The funny thing is that Qui-Gon knew the whole time, and was just messing with her mind.

Also note the reference to assumption in AOTC. I think there is something going on in the PT that has to do with an asumption made by the characters and the audience and that it is bigger than the events of TPM.

BTW, Padme's "We are strong" comment is her way of telling the decoy to answer in the affirmative. Many royals and celebrities have code phrases or gestures to communicate with their security. It's not like Padme is just going to let her decoy run on auto-pilot.

I find that this scene and line is one of the best in the Saga. Bordering on genius

Jedimaster_Prowl, I believe Lucas says in the DVD commentary that both he and Qui-Gon knew. Even though it does look like Obi-Wan gives more of a "Well, you were right, Master" glance over to Jinn.

 

Actually, I first thought that it was Obi-Wan who had figured it out but Qui-Gon hadn't believed him. That's the way it looked to me.

"Assuming" is arrogant presumption. Arrogant Presumption is what brings down the Jedi. They use the term in TPM as a metaphor of the Jedi as a whole. Padme: "You Jedi assume too much"....in black and white...crystal clear, Labeling the Jedi...also a nice bit of forshadowing.

Actually she said "you Jedi are far too reckless" and then "you assume too much".
