Ben is asked this by Shevu before he goes undercover. "Ben thought of his uncle Han's accent or what was left of it. He sounded more Coruscanti these days."

So Han sounds more...British these days?? I always thought Corellian was more about attitude than accent. I also thought Coruscanti accent was a little British and Corellian a little American.

Have the movies or the EU made a concerted effort for us to distinguish between worlds through speech pattern?

I have to say, English Han would be beyond awesome. Biting sarcasm and precise, clipped enunciation for the win. :p

Han has been able to tell what part of Corellia someone came from by listening to them speak. I'm not so sure though.... [face_thinking]

Corellian accent probably works like all the different American accents. Some are very quick and rather unintelligible by non-natives (New York accent), others more understandable (Mid-American accents) and others that are more slow and drawn (Southern accents). Probably something similar with Coruscanti and all the other core worlds.

Coruscanti accent is English - I think that's thought to be canon.

Southern Continent of Naboo is an Indian accent.

Corellian appears to be a particular American accent.

It's common knowledge that Corellians talk like Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara.

Rhett, more like, but with more of a drawl. Even Lando talks a bit like Han - which makes sense, since Socorro was a Corellian colony, IIRC.

So then I guess the question is if Wedge has his ANH/ESB american/corellian accent or his ROTJ/coruscanti accent ;)

    lol [face_laugh]

So what do the solo kids' have? And Ben? If they talk with a british accent, then that's just going to throw everything off for me [face_worried] haha

Does anyone know what a Hapan accent is supposed to sound like? I know there was reference to it in COPL, but I can't remember what is is precisely. And does Tenel Ka have this accent, or not?

Yes. See that scene where Soontir and Syal are on the balcony, and she's talking about his accent.

    Quote?

Anyway, I dunno why I read Hapan accents as Scottish. Either there was some phonetic writing in the DNT or LotF, or I'm crazy. Probably the latter.

Oh, and apparently all Mandos are Kiwis even though that was said to just be a Concord Dawn thing...

Then one wonders where Shmi came from originally since she has a Swedish accent.

Before the PT I always imagined Mandos spoke with Scottish accents, since that's how Fenn Shysa spoke in the Marvel comics.

What I've always wondered is wouldn't most of the Old Republic Jedi have similar accents? Most of them arrive at the Temple as babies and are raised together. So shouldn't their accents be most like Coruscanti (though not totally similar because the kids in the Jedi Temple didn't really interact with outsiders)? Even taking the different species into consideration, accents are determined by upbringing, not biological predilection (to a certain extent of course - a Wookiee raised in the Temple can never sound like Obi-Wan...but he wouldn't quite sound like the Wookiees on Kashyyk either).

I'm thinking especially of all the different accents that are showing up in the Clone Wars TV series (which counts as canon, right?). Besides Obi-wan, none of the other Jedi sound like they have core accents.

Good point, never thought about that. Appearently French accent is Twi'leki, and Aayla had spent some time on Ryloth according to the comics so that makes sense.

I always consider them having a more of a Scots-Irish accent than Kiwi, as Fenn Shysa and Dala. Unless the Concord Dawnian influence now equals Mandalorian. And Shysa and Dala are the only Mandies we've seen speak with an accent that are 100% native to Mandalore.

Many jedi are raised by Yoda. Why dont they use the same ,,chosing of words"? Size matters not ............soo on.

Fenn Shysa's accent is more Cornish than "Scots-Irish".

(Note: Cornish is also the stereotypical "pirate" accent)

Also keep in mind their peers too. I live in Texas now. My parents don't have a Texas accent, but any accent that my siblings and I have picked up are from our peers, not just from the people we live with/were raised by.

That's interesting...I've lived in Texas all my life and people are always surprised that I don't seem to have an accent. I guess it comes from living in Central Texas...

LMAO, I'm in the same boat. I've been in central Texas all my life, and any accent I may have is very minor. Can't say the same for my buddies in south Texas, though. They lay it on thick [face_cowboy]

Yeah I honestly don't have an accent either. I was just trying to point out that any accent that I may have picked up is from my peer-group / people outside the home. If these little jedi kids are spending most of their time at an academy, you can bet that the biggest influence on their lives are their friends and classmates.

Right, but that leads to the same question - if the kids are influenced by their friends and classmates, all of whom were for the most part raised in the Temple from infancy or very early childhood, shouldn't they all sound pretty much the same? They are surrounded and taught by people who grew up in the same isolated environment. And once they are old enough to leave the Temple, they go from place to place with their masters, so it's not like they stay in any place long enough to let that influence their accent.

So really, the Jedi should have an accent of their own (probably more tinged with Coruscanti than anything else).
