Tomayto is the American, bastardised, version.

Tomahto is the civilised, correct, way.

Oh, I have heard one person say it that way. One of the hobbits in Fellowship of the Ring said it, I think.

Don't try to reason with the way the English pronounce their words. They won't change to make actual sense :D

Like saying "centre" "sin tr" and not saying "padre" "pah dr". Also, why isn't your dad your "fathre" and why isn't the boy-Wizard Harry's last name "Pottre"? :p

America just tries to make English make some sense, but it's an impossible feat

It's all to do with where the words originated. I've never known anyone say 'centre' 'sin tr', we say it 'sen ter'. And padre is pronounced 'par dre'. and the thing about 'fathre' and 'Pottre' is that the wouldn't have the 'er' sound on the end, they'd be 'far threy' and 'pot tray'.

I know...it takes a certain intellect to pronounce words differently to how they phonetically read.

Obviously the Brits and Aussies posses that intelligence.
