@Cowgirl Jedi 1701 did you have any Galactic location in mind for Serenity? Outer, Mid, Inner Rim? Near any specific planets or trade routes?

I forgot to put that in?

It's on the boundary between the Mid Rim and Outer Rim, west of the Correllian Trade Spine.

Given the presence of all those lovely tropical islands, is there much of a tourism industry or Serenity?

    The Lucky Star
The Lucky Star is a space station orbiting the blue-green gas giant Avec III, deep in the Outer Rim on the border of Hutt Space. It is the home base of the D'Gres Hutt clan, the current leader of which is Bogwa the Hutt as of 1ABY.

The station originated as a hyperspace navigation beacon and refueling station in approximately 7500BBY. Over the millennia the station was expanded several times, and the D'Gres clan took over the station in about 1500BBY. After the D'Gres clan took over they expanded the station by attaching obsolete starships to the central structure. Most of those starships were large freighters. By the rise of the Empire the station was composed of the central hub and 47 starships of various makes, and was nearly 3200 meters long and half as wide. The most recent expansion was the addition of a Trade Federation core ship which was salvaged after the end of the Clone Wars. Several hundred reprogrammed B1 battle droids patrol the outer hull of the station to keep the mynock problem from becoming an infestation. Additional revenue is provided by tibanna gas mining operations on Avec III itself.

The Lucky Star is known as a den of every type of debauchery and crime, with some sections of it making the lower levels of Nar Shaddaa look safe and clean by comparison. It houses several cantinas and nightclubs, multiple gladiator arenas, three hotels, a casino, and sixteen restaurants of varying quality. Borca's Cafeteria is the worst, known for serving cheap soup of unknown origins. But the best, Caf Oretta, could compete with the finest restaurants on Coruscant. The visitors on the station range from obscenely wealthy to destitute. The Lucky Star is home to hundreds of slaves as well as business owners who rent space aboard the station. The majority of the slaves are Twi'Lek, and few are human.

A wayward spacer can find anything they could possibly want or need in the shops aboard the station, whether it is legal or not. From socks to exotic Death Sticks, they have it all. Many of the older expansions are covered in grime and overrun with vermin and fungus. The air in those sections has been recycled for hundreds of years, trying to breathe through an old boot would be an accurate way to describe the odor.

The throne room of the Hutt clan leaders was originally in the central chamber of the wheel-shaped original structure but it was moved to the cargo bay of a Sith battleship that had been captured by privateers who were employed by the D'Gres clan. Black marble with veins of gold quarried on one of the moons of Avec III was used to create the decorative columns in the throne room and the Hutt's massive throne itself. The throne room is kept dim and humid, the preferred climate of Hutts. Several cages hang from the ceiling, housing beings that have offended or angered the Hutt in one way or another. Guests often amuse themselves by throwing food and random objects at the prisoners. Along the sides of the room there are various tables and couches, some hidden by thick black and gold curtains embroidered with scenes from Hutt history and the history of the D'Gres clan.

The Lucky Star is the home of an annual starship race that takes place in the rocky, icy rings surrounding Avec III. The race occurs on Boonta Eve, one of the most important holidays in Hutt Space. Beings from all over the galaxy gather to take a chance at winning the million credit prize, or to spectate and place bets on the results. Flying through the rings of Avec III is extremely difficult and a significant portion of the ships that enter are destroyed during the race. The race itself is one orbit around the gas giant and takes several hours.

@FanonSock @Findswoman Just checking, there's no deadline to sign up for the current challenge, right? I don't want to sign up for anything new until I can sort out at least part of my backlog of half-written stories, but if I do manage to write up some of the stuff I have in the works in the next couple of months I might join this challenge at the last minute, if that's okay.

There's a lot of stuff I'm still figuring out about Serenity. There might be a little tourism, but I see it as one of those off the beaten path places that you kind of have to know about.

Writing as myself since I’m on mobile. :) That’s right, there’s no deadline to sign up, just as long as the story (or at least one chapter thereof) is finished by the June 3 deadline. So you are perfectly welcome to sign up later. (You’re even welcome to take part in the challenge noncompetitively after the deadline is past, if that’s how the timing works out.)

Some nice fanon on The Lucky Star @Flyboy240

    Some questions:
    * You said that it was "nearly 3200 meters long and half as wide" but what about hight?
    * Any ideas about the political factions inside the Lucky Star, beside the D'Gres clan?
    * Is the D'Gres clan your own fanon creation? If so, can you give us some information about them?
    * Any pirate/smuggler/trade groups who are often returning to the station or have a permanent base there?

    Also:
Just want to say that those amounts seems a bit low to me if you Think about the size of the station and how much people must be coming an going

    1. It's about a kilometer tall

    2. The D'Gres clan has complete control of the station.

    3. The D'Gres clan is my own fanon. They're a sort of "rogue" Hutt clan, they don't interact much with the major Hutt crime families and they basically ignore the Hutt Council. They're involved in piracy, smuggling, illegal mining, money laundering and slavery. Other that I don't have much backstory on them.

    4. There are no other major groups with a permanent presence but members of the Pyke Syndicate and Black Sun are commonly seen there. The station also sells fuel and tibanna gas to the Rebel Alliance.

As for the other stuff the station is way past its prime and the number of visitors has been declining steadily since the rise of the Empire. Most of the restaurants are massive, they're able to seat hundreds of customers at once. The casino is the upper 77 decks of the old Trade Federation core ship. Two of the hotels are cheap and have thousands of rooms while the third is a smaller luxury one.

Just announcing a few updates, covering December 2017 through early February 2018:

@Gamiel announces the following new fanon posts: some tidbits on Assorted Canon Species (for November 2017) and Munto Codru and the Codru-Ji (for December 2017).
The first of those two was originally part of Gamiel’s Worrite post but has now been separated out.

@Flyboy240 has added a new post: The Lucky Star (space station).

@Gahmah Raan has added a new entry for an original planet: Chilades.

The index has been updated accordingly.

    Thanks, all! :)

Is it canon or your fanon that the Ascendancy is that ancient that it was around at the same time as the Infinite Empire?

It's fanon, and funny enough, I actually went through the trouble of looking it up while creating more background for Chilades (and why the Purple-eyed Chiss have some connections to it). The earliest I know of the Ascendancy being active in Legends was the Great Galactic War (although Chiss products like the Charric found their way into the galactic public earlier; there is an in-universe theory of the Chiss being descended from a long-lost human colony before the Old Republic, 27,000 BBY at the latest). Since both the Rakata and the Chiss are from the Unknown Regions (both races are very enigmatic even as they are now, and the Unknown Regions are well, unknown enough to allow plenty of creative freedom), I thought it would make sense that the two would be at odds with each other. As for their technological state at the time, I'd estimate that they've achieved space travel, but had only a handful of planets. In the end, the Chiss keep most of their ancient history a secret from outsiders.

Popular Culture in the Galaxy Far, Far Away!

    ****UNDER CONSTRUCTION****

NOTE: Please, tell me if you want to borrow characters themselves. The in-universe fictional ones are okay, but the others, I might say no for some.

    Wailer-Groups and Singers-Songwriters

    Steamy Wasaka Stew
A wailer-group fussing pronk, jizz and durasteel genres, as well as many others. They're based in Coronet, Corellia's capital and have been active since 14 BBY, when the local troublemakers at the University of Coronet, Antonio Nokaarbe and the brothers Ros and Tosh Corell met an awkard Tralussian exchange student, Con Brochet, whom they quickly nicknamed Wompy, due to his hyperactive behaviour resembling the behaviour of womp rats.

The group got their first performance by chance - with Antonio scat-singing, Wompy playing bassoon, Ros quetarra and Tosh drums. They became somewhat of a novelty act around the Orange Sector of the Coronet City and, despite their onstage antics - such as wearing oven mits and nothing else - acquired a cult status.

Their dreams were quickly chattered in 7 BBY when Ros and Tosh were drafted to serve the Galactic Empire and died in a battle. However, the next year, Antonio and Wompy held a series of auditions and recruited Dandelion "Dale" Pavan, a drummer from Tyrena and a local adolescent recluse, Anjie Mencuri, who has never been in music business before. This line-up of the group was quickly noticed by the pan-galactic label IdleChord and released two successful albums, Milking 'Em Sirens (6 BBY) and their most famous and successful work to date, SexySpiceStarSinners (3 BBY). Imperial Board of Culture was concerned about the raunchy lyrics of the songs such as "Funk My Bit" and "Master Lover" and put the wailer-group on their Scarlet List. This did not impact their popularity.

In 2 BBY, Anjie Mencuri suddenly leaves his wailer-mates for undisclosed reasons. After a short hiatus, the other three members recruit a moody Iridonian Zabrak named Sassvar Graba and released Steamy Seconds in 1 ABY. This was a commercial flop in comparison to SSSS. Graba left the band after the debacle at the Grain Fest in Sacorria in late 3 ABY. In a strange twist of events, Anjie Mencuri re-emerged on his homeworld of Naboo and, after a visit by Antonio Nokaarbe, was convinced to re-join the wailer group.

As of 5 ABY, SWS are working on their comeback album, tentatively titled Coronet.

    Deeply Religious
Nubian pronk band from the outskirts of Nuba City. Throughout its run, the band has been a trio with a constant line-up composed of the Ortolan percussionist Koobalt Nubes, nicknamed Master Koobs, Duros bassoon player Anra Renek and Human singer and quetarra player, Charon San Valorum; all of whom were born in Ronto, near Nuba City in 20 BBY.

The group, formed in 7 BBY was originally part of the prolific pronk scene in Nuba City's famous 1337 Club, located at the 1337 Corellia Day Street. Their first two records, Angry Teenagers (4 BBY) and Growing Pains (2 BBY) were released with the independent label RontoRiot Records. The later sold surprising 50 million copies around Nubia and the rest of the Corellian Sector.

At the time their major label debut, Poodoo! (1 BBY) was released Galaxy-wide on Teta Tunes in 31 Gr:S, Deeply Religious were already an established and popular act on the local scene. Poodoo! was both a critical and chart success, selling ten billion copies and resulting in the band’s first Galactic tour.

After their first Galactic tour, Deeply Religious released a self-titled compilation of selected songs from their first two albums in 0 BBY/ABY, to which The Imperial Board of Culture reacted by placing their work on the infamous list of Scarlet works.

The band subsequently released two albums on their own label. Advanced Explosives Handbook (1 ABY) and Emperor of Air and Darkness (3 ABY) are both known as bold anti-Imperial statements, with a lot of the songs namedropping the Imperial authorities, including Emperor Palpatine himself. Shortly after the release of the latter, the whole of Deeply Religious' back catalogue was banned from selling in the HoloNet stores, on open markets and other places by the Imperial Board of Culture, due to their music being fast, loud and dangerous". The physical copies of their albums have been destroyed in a raid.

Despite the negative publicity surrounding them, Deeply Religious are often cited as one of the bands that contributed to reviving pronk in a new, contemporary form, next to other Nubian acts, The Younglings, Rimmers and Force Rejects.

    @Gamiel

The station is armed, mostly with inefficient old turbolasers and missile tubes that were left on the ships. The space around it is patrolled by a few corvettes and salvaged Separatist droid starfighters. The throne room cannot be opened to space, the old hangar bay doors are welded shut.
