Hopefully this has not been posted before. I have noticed that when many people don't understand the circumstances of parked death other then a broken heart I have a ether you which I will make in bullted format. 1.She is expecting. I am a guy so I don't know how much of thesis true. When padme is expecting a child a lot of her energy is going to the babies. So if you look at pictures during the balcony scenes her eyes look dark and sunken. 2. Because she is expecting a baby emotions are important factor because she is in a fragile state. For me I think the moment of no return is when she is watching the temple burning she breaks down and cries. So if her mental state is not in check to much energy is drained plus she experenices so much tragedy in a short of amount of time she has nothing to live for her lover turned and chocked her the republic falls and all these factors drain her life force but not until she gives birth. Any thoughts?
Even though her health was the root cause of his turn, Anakin abandoned Padme (and what she stood for) for a chance at greater power. I think that abandonment, her realization that he had just murdered a bunch of kids, and her subsequent assault were cause enough, pregnant or not. All of this is compounded, if you consider what Padme risked and gave up to bind herself to Anakin.
I never had a problem with it. It works for me. With all the hell she has went through the last few days I probably wouldn't fair much better. Everything she loved was ripped away from her, Democracy, the Republic, and Anakin. All of which would be very dramatic, and likely drive her into a deep depression. Even before going to Mustafar she seemed rather sullen and defeated, loosing Anakin (Who literally attacked her) Was just the final straw. Its not that she didn't love her babies, but that she had just been beat up emotionally for too long. To me it works, and just adds to the tragedy of it all. Such a sad scene, after getting to know her for three films seeing her die, being so emotionally devastated crushes me. Even her declaration of Anakin's goodness just seems to be a last flicker of hope in a world of defeat.
I personally love the symbolism in her death, and I find it rather poetic It was not until she had actually seen how much evil Anakin was capable of that she realized he wasn't the man she had fallen in love with to begin with. I think choking her into unconsciousness was the last straw for her I honestly believe that her "I love you" was about to get through to him before Obi-Wan came onto the scene. I can only wonder what would happen if he had seen the error of what he was doing, and I think Padme would have been the only one able to save him from that point I can't imagine the guilt Obi-Wan would feel if that became known to him, either My god ROTS is depressing
Alot on this on the last few pages of this thread: http://boards.theforce.net/threads/was-padme-in-rots-handled-right-or-the-latter.50039082/
I haven't had a problem with it. Death in childbirth isn't exactly rare and death can be associated with emotion. People do lose the will to live.
I never understood the sharp criticism about this plot point. You can find stories all the time about humans and animals where there is a decline in health due to emotional suffering; maybe not as immediate as in the film, but Padme did just nearly get choked to death, gave birth to twins, and saw her husband go full dark side (and presumptively die) in the span of a few hours, pretty emotionally strenuous I'd say.
As other's have stated, it's not impossible for someone to die of a broken heart, though usually not that quickly ( though we actually don't know how long it took for them to get from Mustafar to Polis Massa. That said, I posted something in a previous thread - the medical droids were rather hastily rushed into service ( and the mid-wife/birthing droid wasn't even a medical droid, but was chosen because of the way it was designed to birth and hold the babies). There's a possibility they didn't have complete files on the human anatomy. Ther could've been an underlying condition of damage caused by the Force choke that they missed, making her appear to be healthy, but in reality wasn't. The other theory I like was that Anakin and Padme were actually connected through the Force via their love. We see several allusions to this in the PT, notably Anakin and Pame seeming to feel each other in the ruminations scene where Anakin makes his choice to go to the Chancellor's office. Indeed, once he settles on his decision to do whatever it takes to save Padme, she gets a sad, almost guilty look on her face as she looks down,as if she could sense Anakin was about to do something bad. If we go by that theory , it's easy to believe, after being shocked and hurt by the evil her husband is capable of performing, she could very well sense Anakin's "death" in the Med center on Coruscant, and this completely saps her strength, her spirit. Though a small part of her still believes he might be saved... someday.
A droid speaks about the will to live, after it has failed its scientific diagnosis, but what a droid know about the will to live? I think Vader was "connected" with Padme through the Force and he killed her involuntarily. There isn't a scientific explanation because the medical droid do not find it.
Padme dying unexpectedly was intentional on Lucas's apart. It was supposed to mirror a Greek tragedy or a Shakespearean tragedy. Such as King Lear dying of a broken heart in the Shakespearean tale. It doesn't bother me. It supposed to add the melodrama that ROTS was. I suppose to our modern sensibilities it comes off a bit dumb and contrived.
Was her death unexpected, though? Essentially the key plot of the film was predicated on the fact that she would die in childbirth. Just interested to see what you think, Ashius.
I meant the causes behind her death being unexpected. Its pretty obvious it was done intentionally. They have easily explained it. But Lucas opt for the way it occurred to gain more of a Shakespearean vibe in his movie.
There's also a theory that Palpatine pulled life from Padme via the force and gave it to Anakin so he could survive his operation. That's why when he tells Vader that out of his anger he killed her he cracks a smile at his reaction..... It's just a theory and I'm not sure if I believe in it, but it's a wicked thought.
One other thing to add to her mental state is the thought that, possibly, she felt responsible. The man she supported over Valorum turned out to be a twisted dictator. The war she fought turned out to be a ploy to ultimately overthrow democracy. And the man she loved killed children and betrayed his comrades, then said he did it all for her. Learning that her life's work and compassionate nature had been used as part of such villainy had to be a crushing blow. Plus, she probably figured that Palpatine would now consider that her very existence was a threat to his rule. Her family would be targeted in order to strike at her and draw her out. And, finally, Palpatine might just decide to kill her kids or, even worse, turn them to the Dark Side. I think that if all these emotional shocks had happened over a longer period of time, she might've been able to ride it out and adjust. She'd still have been left all but shattered, but she might've kept on living. But getting hit with all this all at once just destroyed her, and she figured everyone was better off if she just died.
In a early draft for ANH, Luke had a older brother who was spiritually injured by Vader using the dark side. C3PO tried to treat him but couldn't, stating how these injuries run counter to science and logic, at least to a droid's view. I believe Anakin spiritually injured Padme from the atrocities he did.
I really liked the parallels as Darth Vader rises and Anakin dies, Padme dies as well. I think they were so in love they both couldn't live without the other and Vader is not Anakin he died when he force choked Padme, so heartbreaking.
I know this is straying off into the comics, but there is a great scene in the new Marvel Darth Vader series, the end of #6 and start of #7.. Spoiler When Vader learns who Luke is from Boba Fett - then he puts two and two together that Sidious lied to him about Padme (that Vader didn't kill her on Mustafar, because she had kids) - he nearly shatters the space window of his Star Destroyer with a force storm, and hails Sidious via hologram - super pissed. While it doesn't provide much comfort for him, it's good to know that Vader does eventually learn the truth.
I the reason he smirks is more to do with Vader's display of power due to his anger, more than any direct cause of the trauma. He's happy that Vader is so powerful, even in his new suit form.
would Palpatine have let Padme live you think? or do you think he would have killed her himself and blamed it on the Jedi ?
No, she's a threat to his plans and to Anakin's dependence on the Dark Side. If she'd managed to survive, he'd have killed her in some way to make his opponents look bad, and ensure Ani's loyalty, one way or another.
I think Palpy siphoned off her life force to keep Anakin alive. That was the power he had learnt, to keep the ones he... Wanted to survive... From dying. I think the whole "lost the will to live" fluff was just because the droids couldn't explain her death from a medical POV and the Jedi had no precedent to suspect otherwise, which is why Padme finally dies as mechanical Vader is born.
