Rogue One CLIFFnotes OF INSANITY - General Discussion (WARNING: THERE BE SPOILERS HERE!)

As we descend closer and closer to Rogue One we know you all are excited to begin discussing the film. Until after the film opens worldwide on Thursday we ask that you contain all the insanity to follow in this handy thread. Here you can discuss the film to your hearts content without worrying about those annoying spoiler tags. However, this is the one and only thread where spoiler tags will not be required. If you are going to discuss the film in any other thread we do ask that you use those spoiler tags. Basically be considerate of others and don't spoil the whole movie for someone who doesn't want to be spoiled (and yes, we know this is a spoiler forum but there is a difference between spoilers and knowing the whole damn movie before you enter the theater because someone saw it before you and decided to spill the beans.)

So, I haven't been here long enough to know if there's any protocol with regards to reddit spoilers, but someone over there on /r/StarWars just posted a plot summary that seems to line up with all of the other spoiler rumors. He's also answering questions.

 

It seems like the main story, outcomes and all the "surprises" are all out there now if you seek them. Too many people are saying the same things without any sort of opposition.

While I'm not changing my view/expectations of the film, I do think a lot of the "Don't look at teh spoilerz or else u will regret it 4ever!!" buzz that was coming out of the early screenings was probably misplaced.

It doesn't sound like there's anything shocking that happens that people who read this forum wouldn't expect.

 

I think a lot of people expected most, if not all, of the protagonist characters to survive, so the fact that they can all bite the dust is probably a big deal. I can also understand wanting to keep Vader's rampage secret, especially since it hasn't been hinted at in the trailers at all.

 

Theres a fair bit that is unexpected.

 

I think there is some that is unexpected, of course, but not to the extent that the early buzz suggested. IMO.

The only rebel who I thought had a small chance of surviving was Jyn, and even that seemed unlikely.

I guess the biggest surprise to me is that Vader wasn't the one to kill Krennic. That seemed like such a lay-up.

 

That was a big surprise to me too. I wonder why they didnt do that? Jyn not surviving was a surprise to me aswell.

 

Yeah, I expected most of them to die... I thought maybe Jyn plus someone else (either Cassian or K-2SO) had a chance to survive, but that was all.

But yes, I expected Krennic to be killed by Vader.

 

I would been more surprised had any of them survived. This is a war movie after all, Saving Private Ryan meets Star Wars where none of the main characters are in the OT therefore I think a lot of people would been confused had Jyn and a couple others limped into the sunset and people going "but where are they in the other ones".

And yes I totally though Krennic got killed by Vader in a fit of rage which would help explain why he is so subvariant to Tarkin in ANH. The Emperor already put him on high warning about killing truly high ranking officials at the drop of a hat. I also think am a bit surprised Vader didn't kill anyone from ragtag group of heroes. I think it would been more meaningful had Vader done it instead of killing some standard rebel scum.

 

Moot point now, but I never got why that was an issue. Why aren't they in ANH, ESB, etc.? Cause they weren't there.

 

I expected all or most of them to die but not in the way they go out. That's gonna be rough to watch.

 

Funny that the Saving Private Ryan example comes up. Because, in that film, there are two survivors amongst Tom Hank's squad by the end (plus Matt Damon, whom they were sent in to save). They didn't all die there.

The whole "why weren't they in the OT" thing is meaningless imo. It's a big Rebellion, and we didn't see anywhere close to all of it in those films. So it's simple, we just didn't see them, or they were off doing something else.

 

I'm going to have to see it. Sounding a bit like a cop-out to me on that end.

 

I also didn't expect that everyone of them would die. I thought that Jyn would survive. Rather surprised by that, I thought they wanted to leave the door open for post-ANH novels or comics about Jyn.
That all the main characters die could be the one and only thing that would leave a sour taste in me about R1, even if the rest of the movie is phenomenal. But I also understand that this means that there were great costs for the rebellion to get their victory at the battle of Yavin.

 

It will be tough to watch, but I respect that this probably means they didn't try to pull any punches to make it gentler, or to keep things open for more films with this crew in the future. ANH is the sequel to RO.

 

so after months of whining that they were gonna turn the movie soft were whining that everyone buys the farm?

at least we can disperese the ridiclous 'jyn is reys' mom stuff.

 

Okay i really shouldn't be reading this thread let alone commenting but it was one thing to point out that someone actually surviving what i assumed was a suicide mission to be a spoiler rather than them all dying!

It will be disconcerting if this proves true, but i'm looking forward to watching it nonetheless!

 

Well we dispersed with that a long time ago.

I'm just surprised. Not whining. As Darth_Voider said, I'd have expected some to make it just so that they could backdoor stuff in down the road. I really thought Jyn was going to make it for that very reason.

 

how do you survive a suicide mission? its the spoiler thread. im not going to hold back so if your worried about it dont read.

To weezer: kennedy said there would be no sequal. so i would think that would mean all the main characters would die in a war movie, not ride off into the sunset.

as for the way some of them die. krennics is quite fitting. and jyn and cassian dying by the thing they have just pretty much guarenteed will be destroyed. ironic.

of course this doesnt mean i wont hate the movie. im really dissapointed in the reviews. i know the initial twitter comments are not always indicitive of the majority of reviews but they were pretty much for TFA.

 

Ditto i assumed that clip with the TIE might be the former imperial rescuing Jyn after she transmits the plans to the Tantive IV, this makes me wonder who else buys the farm?

Well she said there was not going to be a Rogue two... even at the time I took that as meaning that there was still a chance that we get some people making it out.

But yeah, you don't need to cover anything up. Its been pretty clear that everyone in this thread is on the same page death wise.

 

RT is back at 80 percent so im feeling a tad better.

 

Chopper is in the Rebel base if you look hard enough.
