Halloween Challenge

This year's Halloween Challenge comes from thegreatyoda:







"It Was A Dark and Stormy Night Challenge".

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write the single worst opening sentence that you can possibly think of for a vignette. In other words, write a 1,000 word vignette with the worst opening sentence you can come up with.

Rules

1. Your entry must be received by October 29th. Contest will be judged and over by November 5.
2. Your entry must be exactly 1,000 words long and must have "Halloween Challenge" in the title so our indexers know to look over it. Please LINK YOUR STORY HERE IN THIS THREAD.
3. And finally, you must have fun.

 

A thousand-word sentence? How many semicolons are we allowed?

 

I'm sorry, but I really don't get this. I have to write the single worst opening sentence... and it has to be 1,000 words long?

 

I think it means the first sentence has to be the single worst opening sentence that you can possibly think of and then the entry must be 1,000 words long. At least, that's how I read it.

 

is a thousand word sentence possible? I can barely write a two hundred word post!

 

Theoretically, a thousand-word sentence is possible, but unless you try to Clement Freud it and stick in lists, it's going to be extremely difficult.

I've done one-sentence drabbles, but a thousand-worder? That'd be rough.

 

I'm hoping it's just a 1000 word story or story intro with a bad opening sentence. I have a habit of writing sentences way too long and with too many clauses, commas, and semicolons, and I doubt that I could get anywhere near a thousand words.

 

I'm with you Drabbo, the wording of the challenge is strange. I'd like to have this cleared up, are we writing a 1,000 sentence or a 1,000 beginning to a novel and only the first sentence will be judged? Or what?

 

Write a 1,000 word vignette with the worst possible OPENING sentence you can come up with. Better?

 

Ah, a bit better. A 1,000 word story with a terrible opening sentence, Eureka! I have it!

 

I love Bulwer-Lytton! I have all the It Was a Dark and Stormy Night books!

 

I bet at least one person plumps for "A story of a boy, a girl, and a universe..."
