The self-realization challenge!

This is my first challenge... so please be gentle?

All of us have little tropes, cliches and the like that we use in our stories. Little patterns that creep into our fics. This challenge is to have the characters in the viggie realize they're in your fic and have them react to those little idiosyncracies.

It can be any era, any characters, any genre. Serious, angsty, a total parody... just one rule.

Now I just have to figure out those little quirks. I know that I have them, but it's sometimes hard to see one's own insanity....

Hmm, DRL has a lot of us by the throats. It can be difficult to see your own cliches, stereotypes and such. It was for me, and can be a good writing exercise.

 

This is so incredibly tempting. Maybe after I finish the current chapter I'm writing, I can put something up.

I guess mine would have to do with my tendency to emotionally torture Bail Organa. I have nothing against him; but he seems to get the worst in my fics.

 

Curse you, Striker, for comming up with this idea first! It seems so deliciously . . . absurd. I'm really going to enjoy this challenge!

 

So I get to tease myself over how at least half of my fics contain teenaged angst.

 

Oh man, this sounds like fun. Self- is my favorite deprecating humor.

 

I have a LiveJournal fic about Allana that would work well for this with a few edits. I should probably shoot it to a mod first, though, since one part of it is a little questionable.

 

This sounds like fun. Here's one I just rustled up; it seemed a bit short so I thought I'd best not post it in one of the fiction sections and mindlessly push a worthy story further down. It's basically about the narrator bullying the character.


Skittish Magritt jabbed a rusty spanner into the iron wrought innards of his podracer. He flicked his gangly wrist and something inside the vehicle whirred to life. A moment later a choking smog of noxious fumes burst from a broken component and the whole machine sputtered like a sick kaadu. The grotesque engineer, bent lazily on his haunches, craned his neck and eyed up the clouds.

"Are you quite finished?", it squeaked, crossing its wiry arms across its chest in a heavily patronising manner.

The squat, saggy skinned mechanic was more rabbit than man. It was as though a hare had been dropped into a sarlac pit and left there for a few days, only to be spat out into a low budget waste recycling unit full of rocks. The creature was, in every single respect, hideous.

"Hey!", the thing snapped. "There's no need for that".

The melted lump of flesh that ignorantly chose to call itself an engineer was also rude, unruly, and was prone to making personal attacks without provocation. Like a drunken idiot the rabbit man clumsily scrabbled at the wings of his poorly maintained podracer in a vain effort to pull itself to its feet. It gasped as it lethargically unfurled its wrinkled body and stretched itself to its full height, which wasn't very high. It growled at the clouds and spat out a stuttering wad of incoherent babble.

"Now you're just twisting my words. I'm not rude and I got to my feet with ease, although your audience wouldn't have seen that would they? Not the way you bend my actions, you blaggard".

The thing was a liar, too. And mad. It talked into the heavens like some back alley lunatic, and its repair skills were verging on the un-ethical. It also stank like a hutt. Again, in its dementia, it spoke into the clouds.

"Why are doing this. Come and face me like a man, come out of your hiding, wherever you are".

There was no response.

"I'd consider that a response", the thing growled.

No sane person would, therefore it wasn't. A cruel grimace peeled across the rabbit creature's rubbery features and it stomped off across the sand, no doubt to buy something illicit or unsavoury.

"You see", the thing squawked, "why would you say something like that".

No answer came from this mythical presence that the crinkly mechanic could apparently see, and it continued to patter across the pale brown sand, much in the same fashion as a little girl. It pointed its eyes at the floor and continued to stalk away. All of a sudden everything disappeared and nothing but the desert remained. The engineer began to whimper and crumpled brokenly into a foetal ball, giggling stupidly and rocking against its lumpy knees.

Without even an echo of sound, a great mob of tusken raiders popped into existence in a crooked ring formation around its gibbering form. It was about to die.

 

Allana's Treehouse

Covers my tendency to write Allana, and to write Jacen in all kinds of pairings, from canon to crack and everything in between. I edited it a little from the original, to fit the forum and the challenge.

 

Awesome challenge, Striker. I've done self-parody before-kind of-with Oh No! Not Another J/Z Story! but I'll have to write a vig specifically for this.

 

I'm planning on entering when I actually figure out all my cliches. So far all I have is my Morrowind references(and other in-jokes), my severe under-use of the droids(I've never written Threepio and only gave Artoo a bit part), and my lack of description.

 

I'm still trying to figure out what all of mine are, too. So far, I got:

teen angst
long sentences

Ben has a kid and he has trouble with that kid (1 of those fics is posted, the rest are all on my hard drive)
Ben loses his love in some way, shape, or form (once again, only one posted fic, but there are more on the hard drive and on other sites)

I think this will be fun. Though it might be the end of the crew of the Ebon Hawk as everyone knows it, leading to my being lynched by an angry mob of Carth fangirls.

But I'll still try my hand at it! I'll take the risk!

It's not much, but I fit in my love of endless banter, excessive dialogue, strange characters, and violence.
