I hate the idea of Luke having a Obi-Wan type beard. I just want him to look like a regular, older version of himself. Like how he looks like in Apocalypse.

Greatest movie ever made in my opinion. It isn't my favorite movie (that'd be ESB), but it is among them.

I truly think it's the nearest to perfection in cinematic history.

Growing a beard is almost a requirement for playing the Obi-wan mentor role! I think Mark Hamill will almost be required to lose weight just so it's believable that he is a Jedi Master. That's not to say it's impossible to pull off a Jedi Master who's weight challenged but still managing to be formidable but given how the Skywalkers are presented to be agile and lithe fighters in their prime, I'd say it's probably better to go with a Mark that's slim as possible. I don't think he can really go the other way like Vader did with the bulk up in muscle. Also, the beard will help hide any puffiness in the face that weight loss couldn't get rid of.

I like the idea floated about Luke going to a white color theme from his dark Return of the Jedi palette, as thematically I think it makes sense. They had gone with the black to purposefully draw a parallel with Vader and the danger of Luke falling to the Dark side so having Luke go with a white color palette in Episode VII would help visually emphasize the triumph of that particular plot.

Also, about the Holy Grail idea of looking for Jedi holocrons/knowledge, I think that if executed well, it could be a really good plot. If Luke gets killed off in Episode VII much like how Obi-Wan was in Episode IV, the holocrons can then act as Yoda did in furthering the training of the apprentices Luke leaves behind. Although I'm not sure how much parallel should be drawn with the Holy Grail idea since that leads me to think of King Arthur and Camelot, which might not be a suitable template to draw on...

I haven't seen this one posted yet, I think he looks good in this picture, gives you a choice without the beard, I personally think he should have a beard Obi-Wan style.
There is many options for outfits, black, grey, taupe, white; not sold on white.
I would have to see it first.

I'm still of the opinion going with the beard option would be of the best. It's a visual shorthand that shows Luke's grown older and wiser, minimizing the unkind comparisons the unpleasable hatefans will have when they compare what they've seen in their minds about an aged Luke (possibly not helped by the portraits and art used by the EU) and what Mark Hamill actually looks like now. Also, the beard helps draw parallels between the role Luke would play in Episode VII and the mentor roles Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan played, as well as referencing the kick ass retired master motif that old kung fu movies have.

Another thought I had is what if they applied some sort of facial scar to Luke like they did with Anakin in Revenge of the Sith? I think that could work well to visually show that he's been through some hard fought battles so he's more of a melding between the Obi-Wan mentor figure and a toned down version of Anakin's scarred visage?

Luke would look ugly in a beard, IMO.

No need for that since he already has scars.

I just don't see any Skywalker with a beard. Young Anakin didn't have one, force ghost Anakin didn't have one, and young Luke didn't have one.

I would hope Jake Lloyd didn't have a beard he was only 10.

Seriously though, you answered this yourself -- YOUNG. In SW terms one thing that separates youth and wisdom is the beard. Give the men his beard I say!

You're right in that the Sebastian Shaw Anakin didn't have a beard and he was older. But i also think GL didn't like that version and thus used the Hayden Anakin whoe was YOUNG when he essentially "died" and fell to the Dark Side.

Might have been because the follicles were burnt off on Mustafar.

Skin grafts (or the Force) might have repaired some of the damage- and explain why he looks like Shaw- without actually allowing him to grow hair again.

Unfortunately ...The secrets to containing transfer fats and low sodium intakes blew up with the second Death Star. That was a subplot of Palpatine called the "Plagueis Plan".

I want him to have a Santa Clause beard, and he'll trip on it during a lightsaber battle and fall down several flights of stairs.

He can hide a lot of that chin fat and wrinkles in a beard much like a lot of older and overweight men have figured out.

Has Mark Hamill ever had a beard in real life or do we only have Photoshop to try to extrapolate what his appearance would be like with a beard?

There have been real photos of Mark wearing a real beard included in this very topic, in addition to the photoshopped efforts, no?

Ah the pictures posted have been of hypothetical movie posters so wasn't sure how photoshopped they were. I guess we'll get a better idea of where things will go once they ramp up production after they announce a director.
