    I agree with Debo.

EDIT: but that won't keep me from checking out and digging all the artwork, as always.

A giant corporation is wringing more out of a completed film franchise purely to exploit nostalgia and the people who point that out are the cynical ones. :p

I think most people here agree with this. There was definitely interest in the PT for years but after they came out, I don't think anyone was chomping at the bit for the ST or standalone films or whatever. What's the point of these new films? It's obviously money, which the studios will get plenty of because they know the strength of the SW brand.

Well, if we happen to get a good film then I don't see the harm. For me personally, I was more excited by the crashed Star Destroyer than Han and Chewie. :p

What's the point of any film in a capitalist country?

I hope none of those swayed are the people that voted for Crystal Skull as the biggest disappointment. Because it could be just that, minus the hat, plus the Chewie.

I don't know, there are plenty of films that aren't mega-budgeted and don't aspire to make 10 figures and actually have something to say.

No one is making a movie unless there's monetary gain for them from it.

Disney's no different from the guy at my subway stop who plays the same song over and over on his violin. He just wants to entertain people and make a little money. If he could make money without entertaining anyone, he'd probably do that instead. But as long as what he's doing works, he's never going to play a different song on his violin. He may not even know any other songs. And what does it matter? As long as I keep dropping money in his hat, he will believe that what he's doing is the thing he should be doing more of.

Sure it's completely unnecessary for Disney to be turning out new SW films, but on the list of shameless corporate actions, this would be far low on it. Even with all the legit concerns about TFA, the spin-offs, the seemingly overall gleeful reaction to the new trailer I found said reaction to that trailer last week a nice respite from all the cynicism & pettiness (of which I dabbled in too much of) that's been associated with so much of Star Wars since '99. Even with the "those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it factor", a little hope isn't a terrible thing.

Most major movies are "unnecessary," whatever the hell that means.

You're right Vivec. After all, we're Star Wars fans precisely because the barriers to entry are so low. Everybody likes it. It's about as textured and complex as a glazed donut. If we can't embrace the unconditional love of something completely ordinary, we probably aren't capable of love at all.

there are a bunch of context clues in the post you're replying to that can help you figure out what things mean. for instance, when debo said that his opinion might be unpopular, he prefaced that by talking about how the latest trailer seemed to reinvigorate the fanbase. likewise, in his post he mentioned how he felt that the story of star wars had already been told. in that context, it's not an incredibly difficult leap to see how someone might see subsequent films as unnecessary.

but by all means continue the grumpy bewildered old man routine. i'm sure someone finds it amusing.

Yes, I'm the grumpy one here. Not the "bah new star wars meh" that you, Darth Guy, Jabbawhatever, and SuperWatto are going on about. That's not being a grumpy old guy at all.

You're more like an angry child who wanders into a movie half-way through it and gets annoyed they don't understand context.

Or a cranky version of Wocky in threads discussing stuff he has never seen, like Daredevil.

You enjoyed the trailer, and I don't see why Jabba can't be right - that they are doing it to make money AND to deliver a quality product.

Disney are actually proven, over time, to know how to extract maximum value from an IP without diluting the quality. They would never have made those prequels.

For the record, I don't see any "grumpy old men" in this thread. I think both those who are excited for the movies and those who are skeptical are justified in feeling the way they feel.

yeah, pretty much. people have reasons for being pessimistic about more star wars. they've been articulating those reasons but they've mostly been cordial and even lighthearted about it. being pessimistic isn't the same thing as being grumpy. others see new reason to hope for the future of star wars and they've been enthusiastic in expressing their new-found excitement. not you though. you pretty much only bitch and moan about other posters. you've got that market cornered i guess.

Yes, it's "bitching and moaning" to point out the usual suspects who hate everything new and make sure they voice how they hate everything new. It's bitching and moaning to point out that they feel superior about their miserable lives by not liking things other people like.
