ST JJ Abrams to direct Episode VII

After the surprise release of the Japanese trailer and the UK TV spot, it kind of dawned on me that there has been an almost unbelievably positive reaction to the official releases so far. I don't think it can be overstated how difficult of a challenge this movie is or was to make, considering the level of investment that the fans have in the story and the massive base from which different people can find ways to criticize the film. Everyone who watched and loved the OT (and even post-PT) had their own interpretation of what would follow, and too much deviation from what people had hoped for could create quite a bit of backlash. The fact that there hasn't even seemed to be a major red flag to this point is incredible.

 

One last Imperial cell going for a last shot at glory. With some of the FO officers as secret agents for a new threat that will feature in E8 and E9.
Sounds like a continuation to me.

 

You think they're going to defeat the First Order in this? I think they'll be the Empire of the ST. I don't see them as the Sith apprentice/bounty hunter type disposable baddie.

 

The FO suffers a crippling blow or the good guys find out that Kylo Ren, or Snoke or Captain Phasma or Hux or whoever else is working for someone else and the FO is just a lightning rod for the true threat. Or they find out info from calls to those characters.
They keep the Resistance's/New Republic's eyes blind to the true threat.
Then the new threat comes in and slaughters the rest of the FO or leaves a few alive and they team up with the Resistance/New Republic and fight the new threat.
The Trade Federation was still around after TPM. Just got thrown into the CIS. Even with Lucas getting cold feet on that years later.

More like "whatever happens, at least it'll be better than Attack of the Clones".

I do wonder who's worse Orci/Kurtzman joining SW or Lindelof.

 

Say what you will about some of his film scripts, but Lindelof wrote "The Constant," which I consider to be one of the absolute best hours of dramatic television ever.

Possibly, but that kind of mish-mash got Lucas into trouble in the PT. The FO will remain baddies throughout the ST, I think, and they will remain relatively prominent. At least I hope they will. Star Wars needs that layer to really work in the movies, IMO.

Even JJ knows the saga is likely not ending at the end of this trilogy.

 

Once again, JJ certainly talks a good game. And if he's right - that the teasers and trailers accurately reflect the movie we're getting - then it seems as if he and LK might just have walked the walk as well.

I was originally a pretty strident Abrams skeptic. That disposition has almost been entirely chipped away, both because of what I've seen and what I've heard him say. I think that we're not only witnessing the creation of a great new Star Wars movie, but also, the blossoming of a film director. JJ seems to have finally found his mojo

I appreciate his honesty about Into Darkness. He's owning his mistakes and doesn't want to repeat them with TFA. Fingers crossed he didn't!

That's always a very good sign from an artist. Being conscious of his or her mistakes. Never met a good artist who raved about their own work, to be honest.
