[EDIT: This was in response to a post that's been edited so this no longer makes sense. That post points out that they did call it the Hosnian system in the movie...]

Only after it's destroyed, as a side comment that's easily missed. I believe Hux only refers to it as the Republic capital in his speech (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Or maybe the intention of the filmmaker was thwarted by the Story Group...

The "intention of the filmmaker" was purely to communicate that the Republic capital is destroyed. They made it look like Coruscant so casuals would get that automatically, even if we know the reality is more complicated than that.

I think JJA wanted everyone to know it was the capital, and that's why he made it look like Coruscant.

He probably wanted people to think it was Coruscant.

He probably wanted it to be Coruscant.

I'm pretty sure the only reason it wasn't is because the Story Group had already decided on the New Republic reforms like the rotating capital.

Or they just wanted to keep it in their back pocket for other stuff, so they came up with the reforms to explain it.

Er, really? You think the Story Group was just sort of making random stuff up about the state of the galaxy and forced the filmmakers to retrofit the movie to fit that (seemingly arbitrary and nonsensical) choice? You don't think that the "rotating capital" concept is an explanation for why the movie shows a capital that isn't Coruscant?

JJ: "Hey, Pablo, we're going to destroy Coruscant, okay?"

Pablo: "Do me a favor and call it the 'Hosnian system'--we'll take it from there."

    JJ: "Okay."

Disney wanting to keep Coruscant for IP reasons is perfectly reasonable.

    If CHEAP! CHEAP!

Remember JJ Abrams blew up Vulcan.

I'd have been so angry. Not because I care about Coruscant, but because it's such a terribad scene and for it to go out like that would have been woeful.

It also keeps up the Star Wars tradition of them blowing up planets that the audience barely knows anything about. (Why was Naboo not Alderaan, again? C'mon, George!)

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the meetings with the Story Group went exactly like that. :D

It's just weird. Like, I wasn't really old enough to have given the upcoming prequels too much thought after watching the OT but I know that if I had been, I'd have just naturally assumed that Leia's homeworld -- and her adoptive father -- were going to be a big part of the earlier episodes.

I definitely thought it was Coruscant for a good 10-15 minutes until Poe mentioned Hosnian, and I swear that was the most emotionally trying part of the film.

I was ready to hold a parade with Gungans, children's choir, and confetti. Alas, it was not to be.

    So did i.

I thought JJ said, "I destroyed Coruscant."

I was all, "no. No! That's not true. That IMPOSSIBLE!!"

    A galaxy without Coruscant?

Oh, it was too great a dream to be real.

A chance for the freedom of the Outer Rim territories and true democracy.

    Alas.

Is everyone sure that JJ Abrams wanted this new film to feel like it was taking place in the exact same galaxy as the previous one?

Episode 7 feels to me kinda like how El Mariachi, Desperado & Once Upon a Time in Mexico are all sequels to each other, but really kinda aren't. El Mariachi is still a character but his back story and the world surrounding him gets changed each time slightly as if to suggest that what you already watched wasn't the real story while implying that you're watching the real story now.

    Something muddled like that.

How much is that influenced by your ties to the EU though? It's objectively a different GFFA from the EU.

TFA's galaxy feels like a fairly believable "thirty years later" outcome following on from RotJ, to me. There are certain things I find unsatisfying (though not implausible) and I'd rather it were forty years later (not least so that Hamill and Skywalker's ages lined up) but it doesn't feel like a different universe to what we'd previously seen on screen.

To be honest I had more trouble with the prequels, in that regard.

Actually, I sort of get that--but I don't think it's a big problem. When a story encompasses three trilogies and two real-life generations that's going to happen by simple matter of cultural evolution. James Bond movies now don't feel like they did in the nineties and the nineties ones didn't feel like the seventies. Comics do the same thing--a Spider-Man story from thirty years ago might still technically have happened, but the older it is the less compelled they are to treat it strictly literally.

You know what? I was shocked, a little scared...but kind of excited about the prospect of a Coruscant-less galaxy. Talk about a clean break.
