According to imdb, Rey had 42 mins, Finn had 30 mins, Kylo Ren had 19.25 mins, and bb-8 had 10.25 mins. (I can't break down Harrison's number because it's added to his screen time in Eps. IV - VI). Dunno which is right, but my gut tells me imdb is closer to correct on bb-8.

Edit ~ I'm going to update this by saying that if imdb's numbers are correct, it is unlikely Han had more than 30 minutes of screen time in TFA. Total, in ANH, ESB, RotJ and TFA, Harrison Ford logged a total of 81.75 mins if these numbers are correct. I doubt that more than 30 of those minutes are in TFA, and the remaining 50 are broken up between ANH, ESB, and RotJ. It's possible because he had a decent sized role in TFA, but I'm doubting it.

I agree she is very threatened in that scene.

He's all over the place in that scene, its a reflection of how unbalanced and conflicted he is as a person, its interesting that this only really presents itself in the movie when he first meets Rey. He's trying to be the bad guy, has sexual desires and attraction towards her but also compassion and an interest in the kind of person she is, then he's the bad guy again, then a scared little boy. This is where I realised how tragic he is and how he has a chance for redemption. Which is what I think Rey will be, his redemption.

In relation to his positioning at the beginning, its almost like he is looking up to her as if she's above him on a pedestal, he's in awe of her and its not the only time we see this. It happens again in the movie later with the light-saber etc.

All of these moments will make sense more when we see the trilogy as a whole.

This was one of the issues I had with Finn's arc. It's like two different people were competing for writing time and forgot to check for consistency.

i saw it first in german and it was just weird (we dub movies). and all i was focused on was WHEN he would take the mask off. i knew it would happen and i knew it would be a special thing.

when i saw it again i made sure it was in english. but what really sells and doesn't sell the scene is adam driver's voice. i don't know if i'll ever be able to see the dubbed version ever again. i'll have to just mentally substitute all the dialogue.

I tried to focus more on Finn during my repeat-viewings of this film, but he just didn't interest me as much as Rey or Ren. He was cute, funny, a decent lead. That was pretty much it. His character really did fall flat in a lot of ways, especially considering the fact that I assumed he would be my favourite part of the movie. A defected Stormtrooper? That sounds like an awesome concept on paper. In execution, not so much. The care and consistency put into Rey and Ren's characterization and writing were far superior. You could really see how much work the writers had put into the two characters. I wouldn't be surprised to learn the majority of the Ren and Rey scenes were in the works from the very early stages of development. Finn just couldn't compete in my opinion. I still like him and I hope his writing improves in the next two films.

I totally agree with you, I want her to remain a fully rounded and layered character. Its very important to me that she remains this way. I don't want her to just be resorted to a prop which is used for male character development. Its very important because there are not enough fully rounded lead female characters in films. This is why I was drawn to this movie in the first place

I was so angry in the cinema when she got kidnapped, I literally hated the movie in that moment because I was so sick of seeing this happen where women are just used as things which need to be rescued to make the male characters look good. Its damaging because it ultimately makes the female character look weak. She's the lead character and I remember thinking to myself (a male lead would not need to get rescued). Then she got herself of trouble. I was so happy, it was so important to me that she did this and I thank the writers wholeheartedly for doing that!

Is it true that in the German dubbed version, Kylo says "its just the two of us now" instead of "Its just us now" in the forest scene where he confronts Rey and Finn? ...I remember that from a post some pages back....

I assumed he was only really talking to Rey anyway. He was so subconsciously fixated on her by that point that it took knocking her unconscious for Ren to set his sights on Finn.

I agree, I think thats why they had Rey walk forward ahead of Finn, after they came face to face with Kylo in that scene...

ha, well i watched this in december and i was still reeling from han's death like a minute earlier ... i really don't know [face_blush] i think it'd be an easier translation, because 'it's just us now' translated literally would not sound great, if that makes sense.

i'd have to see it again. i just love adam driver's voice so that'll be tough :p

Now that I think about it, Finn's characterization is so inconsistent that I can't help but wonder if the writers added those little details on purpose. Implanted memories maybe? Is he a sleeper agent? Will he wake up from the coma a totally different person? It's possible. It would definitely give his character a new direction, and make him way more interesting. I'll stop myself right there because this isn't a Finn thread.

[face_sigh]I cannot wait for TFA to come out, I'm dying to watch it again and take my time going through Rey's and Kylo's scenes.....I'm in the U.S., for y'all in other countries, I was just wondering if the release date is the same, or if you get the dvd before us or after? I tried finding info about it but could only find stuff about how its being released here April 5th. Oh well. At least youtube has enough Reylo videos to keep me satisfied till then.....

Hey guys, you kind of got yourself back on track, so I'm not going to metaphorically "slap wrists." While it's okay to bring up Finn now and then in this thread, try to keep it as to how it relates to the "Reylo connection."

Also, I was in the Finn thread recently and there were some expressed thoughts that they really would like to engage in discussion with Reylo fans there. So, don't be shy, stick your nose in and see if you can contribute to their discussion.

It's very likely a case of too many writers stirring the pot. VIII is all written by Rian Johnson, which hopefully means better continuity of characterization.

The TFA artbook production notes had Finn come about as a Han type, pure charisma character. It's only after Larry Kasdan came aboard that they changed him to an AWOL stormtrooper. Not sure about the timeline and can't check until very late tonight. Rey was always the central character fearful of the force that ends up embracing it. I believe the Jedi Killer concept was also there at the start, though maybe not as a decendent of Anakin. The 2nd to last photo in the artbook is an Adam Driver-based concept art with a half mask & possibly artificial limb. The very last photo from my memory is a concept pencil sketch of Rey.

I'm a little confused. If calling Finn a "janitor" — which he himself expressed that he was in the movie — is considered baiting, what is calling Ren a "psychopath" and an "abusive unredeemable monster?" O___o

how longer will the dvd version be compared to the theatrical release? how many minutes of extra footage do you think we'll get?

I notice this too. He's concerned about her in every scene they are in together. For example when he first chases her, one thing I immediately noticed in the cinema was that he's supposed to be this menacing scary monster chasing her (after all he has no reason to be kind or delicate towards her, he does not know her). When he knocks her out he ensures that he delicately catches her so she wont be hurt. Then he personally carries her onto the ship. If that was anyone else, he would have just let them crash to the ground and let his stormtroopers do the manual lifting.

Even before he met her, just the mere mention of "a girl helping Finn and the droid" made him flip over the edge.

we were discussing virginity earlier. it's funny because we've got adam driver there, innocence doesn't really play into him very much at all :p

Yet we know based on Pablo Hidalgo's Tweets that Rey and Ren have never physically met before. It's all very confusing. I'm 90% convinced of the Force Bond theory. Rey had visions of Ren... perhaps Ren had them about Rey as well. I'm sure that possibility has come up here many times before, but it just seems like the most logical answer.

i want it ALL. ALL of it. i want ALL the footage they never used. ALL the deleted scenes and ALL the goofs. i want a boring director's commentary and a prop people commentary and a commentary by the second unit director, the make-up people. ALL the crew.

even the sound people. i DO NOT care.

i don't think they'll do that but i can dream.

i'm also worried that the bluray will have more superfluous stuff but that one thing that i need badly so i'll have to buy it even though i haven't got a player for it :p
