ST The Romantic Future of Kylo Ren and Rey

i think it's unlikely and with the best will in the world for anyone to look at kylo ren and go, yeah, that's ok, you had a tough time.

as far as we know the story.

but i'm willing them to try anyway.

the fics i'm reading mostly leave them to be together but apart from resistance and first order. i think that makes the most sense.

 

Exactly, that's the conviction I reached when I saw that stunning scene on the catwalk. It was supposed to be the opposite but I ended up with the feeling that I had witnessed a heart-wrenching sacrifice and not only on Han's side,which was so poignant, tender and sad at the same time, but also on his son's part. Kylo didn't want to do that, that was the last thing he wanted to do but he HAD TO do it. And I think Han understood, I don't know how but he knew it and felt it. He also accepted it.

When Ben saw his father it was as if fate had caught up with him and he had to face it, as if the hour had come and he'd always known it would come, as well as he knew and what he had to do. He had the attitude Jesus had the hours previous to facing his torment and death. When Ben talked to Vader's helm it was as if he wanted to say, "Please, take this cup from me. This is too much."

Of course I don't wish to compare Jesus with a movie villain, or anti-villain, which is what I think he is, what I want to compare is the attitude. There's this boy trying to avoid his father because he has to do something that will not only kill his fater, who he loves, but also destroy his own self.

He says he has to do it and I always thought this was related to his mission and I thought perhaps he was some sort of fanatic who blindly believed in a cause and thought anything must be done to help this cause succeed. The fact was that he didn't do it out of hate or malice,but out of exessive zeal and because he was too committed to this cause of his that he considered just, although many others would think the opposite.

His actions are horrible, there is no excuse for them whatsoever, but many horrible things have been done in history in the name of "just" causes, like many liberation or independence wars and the such. Think of the Crusades, they were awful, all the blood that was spilt, the years of war, the destruction the lives lost. However, in those days many thought they were not only justified but heroic. Nobody would believe they were nowadays, but times have changed.

So, I thought Kylo was misguided and deepley deceived,and terribly wrong,ut he didn't do it because he hated his father but because he had to, using his own words. He asked Han for help and Han accepted to help him, ready to do anything it took. Then Kylo/Ben destroyed his father's life and his own soul with a single action. It felt like a double tragedy, and he also knew Snoke will crush him when he isn't deemed necessary and also that he was doomed after that.

But what if he has a reason to do what he did, everything he did, and he really has a just cause? What if he is doing everything for the greater good, sacrificing others' lives and his own in the process? Perhaps what he sees in his visions is so ghastly, the future is so bleak that he belives he must do ANYTHING to preven that from happening?

Perhaps this is what motivates him, because ultimate power and that BS wouldn't make sense. Let's keep that where it belongs, in bad children's cartoons and B-movies.

Also, when I said that I thought Rey andn Ren are like Romeo and Juliet on the stars, I didn't mean the story is going to be the same, I've never thought that. Writers take inspiration from other works, especially something so fine as Romeo and Juliet's tragedy. Paying homage to the stories, characters and tropes that are already part of the colective imagery, respecting the classics and our cultural heritage doesn't mean plagiarizing a story that has already been told, it means taking inspirationg but then creating a new story. All stories have been told before in some way, what good writers do is adding their own talent, craft and ideas to the mix, and producing something that seems new, that tastes as good as new, although there's nothing completely new under the sun.

So, the more Rey and Ren resembles Romeo and Juliet in the beginning, the less chances there are for us to find the same story ultimately. If Kylo is so similar to Romeo, then his fate must be different, the outcome must be different, otherwise the writers would have been lazy and quite dumb, and I don't think they are, not at all.

It would be too much to make him act and feel like Romeo, play "Romeo and Juliet"'s notes when he carries the girl to his ship, and then repeat the story to a T. No way. We have also spotted many other indicators that suggest a very different outcome.

Also, I find it weird that so may people, I mean the antis, think romance is cheesy or Romeo and Juliet is mushy. I guess most have never read it or seen it performed, because there's nothing cheesy in Shakespeare, much less in this tragedy where nothing superficial or silly happens. There's love, conflic, a chilling feud between two factions, etc. And then two young kids who found that love is more important than greed, power and feuds, but those same problems their elders have cause the ultimate tragedy, lead them to their deaths. If this is cheesy or fluffy, then I don't know what cheesy means, really.

I guess many people assiciate romance with Holliwood rom-coms or Harlequin novels, but that is not romance. There is nothing easy or fluffy in classical romances, far from it, but that is out of topic, so I'll stop here.

Of course I don't want the same story, I expect something "new", but let's not forget that "Romeo and Juliet" is a damn good story and a magnificent play.

 

Just reading another thread where I'm tagged... some are thinking I made up things. Oh god, if I made up things that would sound much better then this. It was impossible to catch everything, security was everywhere. There were many action scenes (on the walls) with few huge explosions. I could watch - from distance, but without using phone. Mark Hamill question - they are hiding actors incredible well. I met Warwick Davis and security wanted to kill me, he was very polite and gave me a hand, introduced himself and said that we can't take a photo because of rules. Great actor. Been there, saw things, felt the Force... ppl just can be jealous uf they want, I really don't care.

The vibe I'd expect would be a sort of Xander and Spike vibe from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Xander is the comedic friend who's always had a bit of a crush on Buffy. Spike is initially the villain, but he reluctantly joins the main gang of good guys and falls in love with Buffy. Xander never truly trusts him and the two just really despise one another. Even after Xander gets engaged to another woman he's entirely in love with, he still would prefer it if Spike were gone.

So yeah, like you said, Finn and Kylo would likely never get along. There's too much bad blood between the two even if Finn does get his romantic interest in the next film and no longer has his little crush on Rey.

 

Just purchased the Lost Stars book. Which apparently has a Romeo and Juliet theme.

i have previously compared KR and jesus re: the destruction of the academy which is kinda cf jesus taking apart the temple. it could be about corruption. he could perceive luke's ideas as corrupted.

i am on board (sorta) with the religious fundamentalist thing, it works for me, and i think it would be interesting to do that in a fantasy film because religious fundamentalism is becoming so strong, it'd be good to see a resolution play out mythically, if that makes sense. in a sense, he may be full of juvenile ideas (which jesus was at the time as well?) and he needs to grow up to learn that he's taking this wayyy too far.

Yeah, all the meanings are just up in the air. I'm trying not to think too long into it, because it drives me insane. But like Maz says, there's always a fight against the dark side, from the Sith to the Empire to the FO. So just because the Sith was destroyed by Anakin, and the balance was restored, it doesn't mean the Dark side is permanently eradicated. By having Ben being born an embodiment of the light and the dark meant that he has potential for either. So just as panki said, maybe he as he was seduced to the darkside, the balance has been compromised. I'm all for the Rey has been sent by the Force to correct it.

 

Oh Arcanah!!!!! I'm not a hero, unless we say that every one of us on this board is a friend and hero to each other, which I definitely think is true. We all have brought a smile to each other's face. We've all helped each other with doubts. We've all helped each other get our minds off of real life problems for a little while. You have certainly done that for me with your posts.

That's why I was irritated. Not irritated at you, but irritated because you were upset. You always fill this board with such a positive and happy energy. I always look forward to your posts because they always put a smile on my face and because you always exude such an authentic, easy sense of self. So when I saw you feeling down, I was like "Dammit! I'm gonna try to fix this!" Lol! I'm just glad my post helped!

And isn't it the truth that this board is really amazing? There really are so many nice and very interesting people here. I also love that everyone is from a different place. When I was still in school, I got to travel so much more and stay in touch with friends from all over America and Europe. Then some pretty bad real life stuff hit for several years with chronic illnesses and deaths among several close family members and friends, so I kind of lost that part of myself. But with this board, I feel that I am finally getting a chance to get out of my own little corner of the world again. So I know exactly what you're saying with the thread being a kind of personal support group. I am glad that this board is helping you right now too. Life is almost never easy, so it really is a blessing to have an outlet like this.

I am also so impressed that you got into your George Clooney/Doug Ross zone! Lol! I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you would be great in an emergency. Your "live and let live" attitude makes me think that you would be very easy to talk to if someone is going through a hard time. Of course, you might not want to deal with the burden of other folks' baggage (I completely understand that ... believe me <g>), but I have a hunch that you might be good at it.

Okay, now back to the fun! LOL! All I got to say is that clip of the walking, masked Ren that just came out is like freaking sex on wheels! Holy ****! The man really does know how to "claim his space"!!!!!!

also, the rebirth thing is strong, rebirth can only happen through death, which is what he is hoping for by murdering han and can't get it (poor sod) but it's always fascinated me, how something so horrible (as crucifixion) can be interpreted as something good as well.

well, maybe not good.

i'll lay off the cod-theology for now. but i see the christian thing played out in the new trilogy. i just hope not to its ultimate consequence. maybe just a different sort of rebirth. kylo/ben 2.0 sorta.

Sforza, I would completely ignore it. You are having a great time, and that's all that matters. I noticed the ones that are being completely rude in the other thread are notorious Rey Skywalker/FinnRey shippers. That part is glaringly obvious to me. Everybody else seems neutral. Enjoy yourself - we would love to be in your shoes!

 

A little observation about the space horse - it's ears are so sooo Yoda ears!!!!

Also in the novel after Rey escapes with her Jedi mind trick it reads:

Ren struggled to control himself. A great deal of his education had been devoted to learning how to live and move forward in the absence of emotion. Right now, he needed every bit of that training to stay calm. As bad as had been the girl's expulsion of his probing, worse was the knowledge she had a acquired. At the moment, he did not feel powerful.
He felt diminished.

And regarding some people's (not on here) beliefs that Ren takes pleasure in physical torture this is telling on his stance on it - from the same page of the novel about the guard Rey mind tricked:

"If you would wish to try stronger methods I can...."
"No-no. Keep questioning him. Just-questioning. He may remember something." His tone darkened. 'The girl. She's here somewhere. There's nowhere for her to go. When you find her, bring her....." His voice drifted away, as did his attention.

 

I think it's really cute I hope it's like a pet, very gentle space horse, but can be dangerous if he/she needs to protect the owner (Finn would be the best choice) soooo cute
