As an aside, my partner has heard that the prequels were the worst films ever made so has refused to watch them and buries into his phone whenever they are on. I'm sure he's gotten some by osmosis.

Pretty much agreed. I like to read Lucas' comments on the saga, but I definitely agree that the point he is trying to make is already in the film; it's just that because Lucas likes to leave room for interpretation, it may be harder to isolate particular interpretations and reading his comments is a useful way to see one (but certainly not the only) very clear interpretation.

I think the films definitely get across the salient points of Palpatine's plans and on-the-spot adaptation to events well. I just think it would be a fun mental exercise (for me at least) to try filling in some tiny details. Perhaps it's the influence of a comic series I like where the revelations were brilliant but it was equally satisfying to realise that the minor details do work out. Or maybe halfway through I'll realise that it really is better not to try to seek an explanation for everything because there are truly unfixable plotholes and be happy to stop there.
