Lit Most Overrated and Underrated Star Wars Book

Add me on that BFC bandwagon for it being underrated. I think it is by far the most mature (in the actual meaning of the word, as opposed to "let's see how many characters we can maim in this book") non-Stover EU work.

 

Overrated: Anything Stover
Underrated: Han Solo trilogy

Just yesterday I finished Heir to the Empire again for the first time in years and I have to say it's not as good as I remember it being. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but in my mind it was among the best SW books I had ever read... but it's definitely not.

I think Lords of the Sith is underrated. It's one of my favorite canon novels and it doesn't seem to get much love.

EDIT: by the way, when you guys say "Han Solo Trilogy" I'm assuming you're talking about the Crispen trilogy and not the Daily trilogy, right? How do we normally distinguish between the trilogies on the boards? Is one "The Han Solo trilogy" and the other "The Han Solo Adventures trilogy?" Just checking because I'm never sure which trilogy is being referred to.

That seems to be the usual way, yes.

 

Interesting that you and other people say that about the Thrawn trilogy, because for me it's the opposite. It took me a long time to warm up to it, and I wasn't crazy about it when I started as a teenager. Reading it again years later, it's easily among my favorites.

And I think you just say "Han Solo Trilogy" (with a capital T) versus "Han Solo Adventures."

 

I'm not talking about the Thrawn trilogy as a whole, just Heir to the Empire specifically. Not quite as amazing as I remembered, but still great! Can't wait to read the next two before Zahn's new Thrawn novel drops!

 

I have to vouch for Legacy Vol 2 as underrated. I enjoyed it a lot and coincidentally it has several similarities with what ended up in TFA

 

For me, I think an underrated book would be Maul: Lockdown. It's one of my favorite Star Wars books out there and it sheds light on a different aspect of the galaxy with the violence it shows in the book.

NEU: A New Dawn

Underrated: EU: The Clone Wars novelization
(Traviss made a bad story good...And I came to love the show...But that movie stunk...I was really excited about it too and saw it in the theater).

NEU: Heir to the Jedi

 

Overrated: Tarkin. I liked it but it's my least favourite Luceno novel.

Underrated: Darth Maul Shadow Hunter and the Coruscant Nights trilogy. These are some of my favourite SW books but I hardly hear people talk about them.

 

Overrated: Lords of the Sith -> this book is okay but seems to have this weird aura just because Vader does good things in it. Basically a book which tries to replicate that Rogue One scene but without any of the emotional weight behind it.

Underrated: Kenobi -> I know this is already pretty highly rated, but it doesn't get mentioned enough as really one of the best Star Wars books ever written imo (probably my favourite of all time). So so so good.

 

Overrated: Bloodline

Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, but I wasn't blown away by it like most people.

Underrated: The Old Republic: Deceived. It deserves way more recognition than it gets. Are there any novels (especially good ones) for ANY franchise that expand on video game trailers?!? Also, the Dark Times comics. But, I may or may not be biased when it comes to them

 

Overrated: Shatterpoint
Underrated: Skyewalkers

 

Overrated: The Thrawn Trilogy, I think this may be due to the passage of time, but I found it ok, not good, not great (nor bad really) just alright, kind of dull, but a few ok character moments (only one good new character, Booster)

Underrated: Darth Bane, (mostly the first and third books, the second is the weakest) great moments, good action, good characters (seeing Bane and Zannah grow and change and their relationship is unique for a single trilogy). Very underrated and put down series.

 

Skyewalkers was great. You could tell Abel had a blast writing it.

 

It's just so much fun.

 

Booster Terrick isn't in the Thrawn Trilogy - though he is in Hand of Thrawn. You may be thinking of Karrde.
