I mean, I watched both shows when I was very young, but I didn't know Benson was also in Soap.

Benson was actually a spin - off of Soap. Not many people remember that.

Benson was so utterly different in tone. And he was tremendous in both.

    aww, ain't that a shame.

seriously though, i love fats domino and his influence shouldn't be underestimated. "ain't that a shame" was the first song john lennon ever learned how to play, on the banjo of all things, and lennon later covered it on his 70's album "rock n' roll". i knew he was still alive, mostly because he was in the news during hurricane katrina when his house was basically destroyed and for a while he was missing. glad he at least got to enjoy a few more years after that fiasco.

Yeah, Fats Domino's music just holds up. That wonderful signature piano style often overshadowed his singing, which was unadorned and simple, but often just perfect for the songs he sang. I think my favorite is Blueberry Hill, which is just one of the most perfect pop recordings ever made. No fluff, no nonsense, no distraction, just a great song given a great performance. Can you imagine how much melisma this song would if it was recorded today? But it's just so perfectly constructed on this recording. But everything he did was great. This is just probably my personal favorite, but practically any song of his is worthy of being someone's favorite.

he also had an absolutely infectious smile, and for such a large man an inordinate amount of songs about walking.

My parents were undergraduates in college when Domino started his half-decade string of hits. I'm pretty sure I learned the lyrics of Blueberry Hill and Ain't that a Shame in utero.

I was going to write "I bet it wasn't that thrilling," but it seemed unfair to comment.

Mr Domino apparently didn’t get my memo about the odd/even day thread title rotation.

And please tell me I’m not the only one who immediately thought of Richie Cunninghan when learning of his death.

I keep wanting to say I hate this thread but posts like Rogue1-and-a-half's and tom's make it all worth it.
