I've seen the TLJ 6 times and still trying to decide whether I like it or not. Studying the pro and con list I made for it hasn't helped much. I hope seeing a double feature of it tomorrow (once in 3D Imax film, once in 2D 4K digital) might give me some greater insight. Maybe it's the different formats that are causing me problems -- 4K, Imax, XD, digital, film. I'm sure I'll figure out my true opinion of it if I keep at it enough. Wish me luck!

I think the lack of fresh air and sunlight is what's causing you problems.

Listening to the TLJ soundtrack, I can’t help but observe that the music Williams composed for the Canto Bight bits is some of the most memorable he’s written since the prequels. I almost wonder if Canto Bight was drawn from out of the original treatments Lucas had made for the ST.

It's one of my favorite scenes in the film. It's also one of John Williams' finest moments in the film. RE the criticism, I feel that if it were Luke doing the exact same thing, or Kylo Ren even very few people would have a problem. Seems some people think there's something comical in seeing an elderly woman do it. Hence the Mary Poppins stuff. She Darth Vader's daughter though, FFS.
When you have a character portrayed in a scenery chewing potentially over the top manner it's not going to win everybody over. I think he's awesome though.

I've seen this movie once, loved it, and I'm supposed to go see it again this Wednesday.
    Don't really feel like it.
There will be no surprises, and the surprises were what I loved about it. This time I'll probably
watch it with the cold analytical view that impairs so many others here, and I have no need for it. Would be cool if I could just stick to one viewing per decade or something. Keep it fresh. But alas I already made plans.

I don't understand why it's somehow bad if Rey's parents are unknowns. I think it would be bad if they're not and the GFFA is made smaller again. I also don't understand why it's bad that Snoke dies or why we need more background on how he accumulated his power. The last time we were given something like that, we got the prequels. Killing him here suddenly made the movie veer into uncharted territory, I thought it was very refreshing and I totally didn't see it coming.

I liked it more than I expected to.

    The Good:

—Humor. One thing I really missed in the PT was dialogue, and this movie has it in spades. “Permission to get in an X-Wing and blow things up?” “Permission granted.” And “See you around, kid.”
—The Porgs and the ice foxes. Both were cute without being overwhelmingly cute.
—Holdo. In Leia, Princess of Alderaan, she was Luna Lovegood. Whereas Luna owned in her particular way, the reader had to look for it. Holdo had evolved beyond that in this movie. Nobody had to look to see what she owned.
—On that note...this movie was more feminist than I thought it might be, given Holdo, Rose and Leia’s leadership.
—Luke’s explanation of the light side of the Force, and how it was not limited to any particular religious belief or doctrine.
—Snoke. He was a much better villain than I anticipated. Torturing Rey in mid-air? Ouch.
—The ending was more hopeful than I had imagined. The Resistance is on the run, but I definitely got the impression that I might come back.
__Finn finally opening a can of whoopass.
    —Space Horse rescue
    —Space Monaco, i.e. Canto Blight.

    The Spectacular:

—Kylo Ren got owned. OWNED. Snoke, his uncle, and Rey. He did not win anywhere.
    —The Rey and Finn reunion.
    —The Luke and Leia reunion.

    The Bad:

—Hux. What the hell was that? Sorry, Domhnall Gleason, you were far better as Bill Weasley. You were just a screeching villain worse than Krennic here.
—Leia, despite her leadership skills, seemed old. Almost like the film was trying to make her old.
—Chewie eating porgs. Not funny. I could pass.
—Rey’s parents, after somewhat of a buildup in The Force Awakens, being nothing but alcoholic junkers who sold her for booze. We could have been told that in The Force Awakens.
—Poe having a tantrum. Really, Poe? One character tantrumming is quite enough, thanks.
—Kylo breaking his mask and several windows in a tantrum. Was I supposed to sympathize there?

    The Ugly:

—Rey’s lack of reaction to Kylo talking to her across the galaxy through the Force. Hi Rey—the correct response is, “Leave me alone, you psycho.”
—Shirtless Kylo. I have no problem with Adam Driver himself, but really, Rian Johnson? Are you making a point here?
—Luke’s back story with Kylo. That was ridiculous. The fact that Rey believed Kylo’s version of it was even more ridiculous.
—Luke and the blue milk, as well as the Canto Blight alien with boobs. Yeah, Rian, we get it. But keep that gratuitousness to yourself.

Seems that a lot of folks watched this turd yesterday (myself included), ergo the site being dead all through the afternoon and evening.

Oh boy...what can I say? I haven't seen such a bad SW movie since the PT. There's just so much unnecessary DUMB **** throughout outweighing some good moments that I don't think a second viewing will make me change my mind. I sincerely want those three hours back.

It’s not good or bad, I just didn’t like any of it. I know millions of people loved it and I’m not going to argue they are wrong to love it it’s just that I didn’t love it it even like it much. I thought it was all very stupid. But that’s just me.

    http://deadline.com/2017/12/star-wars-the-last-jedi-rotten-tomatoes-metacritic-imdb-users-cinemascore-analysis

"How can it be that Last Jedi‘s audience results are this high? They point to the Metacritic user score of 5 for the film, IMDB’s 7.9 out of 10 rating, and the Rotten Tomatoes’ Audience Score of 56% from 96K reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, Last Jedi‘s user score is also an anomaly. Typically, user scores aren’t that far from their critical ratings. Simply put these are all unscientific means of measuring audience reactions. Anyone can log into these sites several times (anecdotally we played around with this last night) and weigh down the audience grades against a movie. The consensus from non-Disney sources this morning is that “trolling” occurred here in regards to the online reaction to Last Jedi. "

What sort of deadbeats have nothing better to do than run a campaign to bring down the online public rating of a movie?

The same people who destroy video game ratings on Steam or Amazon. People with nothing better to do.

Having talked to many people coming out of screens after the movie over the weekend, I met hardly anyone who said they didn't like it.

The most divided group was the 501st & Rebel Legion who we had in to promote the movie. I'd say they were 50/50 with their members over who liked it & who didn't

I saw it yesterday with the 12 year old and we both loved it. It wasn’t perfect, the Finn/Poe Daisy secondary storylines could have been merged and streamlined, and the Leia thing at the beginning was silly. But overall it did a great job of building suspense and playing with expectations and tropes. And I love the reveal about Rey‘s parents.

Edit: though on that last point, I am not without trepidation over the reasons Disney wanted that.

I can only imagine the emergency Star Wars meetings that took place when Carrie died. It's top level. It's JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, Kennedy and Iger in a room with a few heavy hitter writers. They decide
the movie has to have the Luke Leia moment and they come to an agreement with Abrams about how to deal with it in 9. They agree to the tribute credit.

The thing that bothered me the most is still the
iceberg space chase that was the tent pole of the entire film.

The plan is to take my mom this Saturday so I'll see how I feel on watch #2. Right now, I see both sides of the fans that both love it and hate it. Personally, I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars. My full spoiler review is on my blog.

I'm going to see it a second time and try to achieve a rudimentary fan edit through strategic restroom breaks and drink refills. I've mapped it out.

what was the exact phrasing? In loving memory of our princess: Carrie Fisher

You know, it was right there. The solution to that particular problem. Leia dies by spacing. It's war, it happens. Give a little of a pass to Kylo by not having him do the deed, but it happens. Leia dies. It motivates the Rebels. It motivates Luke ****** Skywalker to get off that rock and pick up his sword, go Gandalf the White on his nephew and do something just as spectacular to let him know how out of his depth he is.

But noooooo, Leia does her BS Space Mary Poppins thing, Luke Skywalker is sacrificed in terms of character and we'll probably have to deal with an abominable CGI-uncanny-valley rendition of Leia in Ep. IX. Ugh.

My friend asked the same question when Paige was about to drop the bombs. With the hatch open at the bottom, is oxygen being pumped into the chamber? I would guess yes.

As for Leia - the Force. How does Kylo Ren and Rey speak planets away? The Force. How does Luke do what he does? the Force.

We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.

Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.

Surely a shield would keep an atmosphere of sorts within the surrounding area of a ship were the hull to be breached and the crew be exposed to space while the shield was up.
