Especially since Rose is also cited as “bad.”

Personally I liked Jyn Erso better than Rey, however, when the first criticism of a character is that she told another character not to hold her hand, I suspect that the criticism would not cross genders.

It's funny that Finn, our erstwhile sanitation worker and general ****kicker grunt, a chap that wields a mop for a living, can do all the things he does in TFA and TLJ - particularly his understanding of the intricacies of tracking systems and how they operate and where they are located, flying speeders, proficiency with all kinds of weapons, hand to hand combat etc etc (holding his own against an elite soldier like Phasma) yet Rey is the Mary Sue and Finn is just cool.

I really like the moment she tell Finn not to hold her hand.

I also like the moment shortly after where she OFFERS her hand to him.

Big difference between offer and take there.

I don't care if she is a "Mary Sue" (she's not) , my first screenings of TFA and TLJ had young girls who came out of the theater excited and telling their parents how much they loved Rey and I'll gladly take that over the feelings of pissed off fanboys any day.

It was her acting, not the line I wanted to focus on. It sounded ridiculous coming out of her mouth.

Yeah, nobody is defending Finn here though. I specifically said that the only good character in the new movies is Kylo and that is much to Adam Driver's amazing acting rather than Kylo himself. And Finn has a stormtrooper background so much of what you said, he should be proficient at. Rey was just some hobo from a planet in the middle of nowhere.

She is. There's not a single character I've seen on television or film that exhibits the qualities of Mary Sue as well as Rey. They should actually put her picture in the wikipedia page because that's how well she fits the definition.

Perhaps Daisy Ridley isn't going into detail as to why she's not a Mary Sue to prevent spoilers.

But it is very apparent throughout the Star Wars films and animated series that a Force user is naturally gifted and excel at many tasks that may be considered a "Mary Sue" or the male equivalent of that phrase. It's been explained since A New Hope, that the Force can control your actions. Do Star Wars fans really need to be reminded of this?:

Anyone that thinks Rey is a Mary Sue is pretty much Han Solo thinking the Force is a bunch of "mumbo jumbo."

Rey is powerful with the Force.

One of the problems with TFA - If Finn is nothing but a cleaning grunt why is he part of Phasma's stormtrooper team?
He's clearly trained how to fight & use a blaster effectively if he got drafted to that squad. Presumably he can also fly starships to a passable level with basic military training.

Man, she literally has no downsides to her character. She overcame her challenge in the first movie. Everyone seems to like her. Jar Jar Binks has more character development than her.

Many things aren't explained in the new movies. That's partly the reason why they're ****.

She has much or even more character development than Luke in A New Hope. She struggles just to put food in her mouth on a daily basis and she's alone; no support system what so ever. She's clings to hope that her parents will return for her, until Maz tells her to let go and move forward.

exactly. this is why people claiming to be star wars fans but crying about "mary sues" can pretty much only be explained by chauvinism.

i only see the complaints coming from one gender so i don't think age is a primary factor. could be wrong though.

I don't know what a Mary Sue is. People have probably explained it to me before, but I keep forgetting.

    Seriously?
Luke - is ambitious, wants to get off the planet, isn't satisfied with his life (you can argue he is kind of depressed at the start), wants to go on an adventure, is hopeful and dreamful of the feature. Has strong feelings towards his friends and family, but at the same time he is brash and reckless arrogant and impatient, has a knack for getting himself into trouble which almost cost him his life a number of times in ANH. And even though he exhibits many emotional qualities, he is willing to learn from Kenobi and other characters about his own faults, he is not closet-minded. He blunders his way throughout the movie but somehow manages to survive and learn from his experiences.

Rey - um, she longs for her parents? She is good, I guess, willing to help a droid even though it may cost her her life. She also seems to be amazing at everything she does. She completely embarrassed Kylo both in the Force and their duel. She happens to be an extraordinary pilot and engineer, even knowing the Millenium Falcon better than Han Solo himself. She appears to be extremely smart. She is self-sufficient and doesn't need anyone to help her. And that's it I guess.

Truly a more complex character than Luke. No downsides only positives. I mean, if it was her in ANH, I'm pretty sure she could have defeated Vader right then and there with no help from Kenobi.

A Mary Sue is normally a chick who isn't in the kitchen makin her man a sammich but is off doing manly type things.

edit: if pouting and looking like you are about to burst into tears at any given moment is great acting then Adam Driver is indeed a great actor in the ST

Kylo was pretty badly injured at the end of TFA. He had enough trouble fighting Finn.

It's hardly like he got pwned, he was practically fighting one armed most of the time

Personally I could have lived without Luke’s emotional scenes, particularly his whining to Owen about wanting to pick up power converters and his whining to Yoda that they were wasting time.

I could buy the idea that Rey’s piloting skills could have used explanation, but she beat and embarrassed Kylo (a fact that is awesome, BTW) because he’s a whiny immature hothead and she isn’t. He could choose to behave like a 30-year-old man instead of a two-year-old whose toys just got taken away, and maybe he could win the duel.

She does not know the Falcon better than Han, she knows the changes Unkar made to it because she was there and Han was not.

    Yes, seriously.

Come on, you're just describing the characters' situations and events and not development of said characters. So, the development of the characters of Luke and Rey are basically the same; they long for something but are taken into a fight that becomes their destiny.

As for Rey and her abilities... the Force works in mysterious ways. BTW, it seems like you missed it, but Kylo freezes Rey and captures her in The Force Awakens.

And Kylo is actually beating Rey in the saber duel,
    [IMG]

it's only when Rey closes her eyes and allows the Force to flow through her is she able to turn the tide and defeat him.

i think the point is that both characters are fairly archetypal, something completely typical to star wars, and neither are particularly complex.
