That... is why the prequels fail. Somewhat.

I don't think that'd be a good change. Dooku's character is of an evil but still inteligent man. Maul is just a henchman, a merchandising to sell the movie, his life purpose is to die. He barely speaks.

I'd probably have Anakin's love interest be Force Sensitive, either a Jedi or Sith.

I feel like because of her pacifist nature, Padme was too vulnerable. I'd also like for her to be a part of the Skywalker family that is strong with the Force. Imagine the line, "The Force runs strong in my family. My mother had it. My father has it. I have it. And my sister has it."

Katz and Huyck came in way later than the initial drafts and essentially just did a dialogue polish. Lucas himself worked out the structural issues which existed in early drafts, and of course those existed, because something as expansive and weird and complicated as Star Wars doesn't just come about instantly and perfectly formed in a day. Judging Lucas by unfinished drafts in such a manner is horribly unfair.

I certainly would've had Maul survive until Revenge of the Sith. And I would've had Anakin kill him

My episode 1 I wrote 3 years ago , I called Yoda a myth and just a rumor - Real Episode 7 , they called Luke a myth or just a rumor...A bunch of other similarities from my Trilogy and JJ Abrams movie, i wont get into.

My Poster I made a year ago for my Episode 8

Show Anakin constructing the lightsaber that Obi-Wan would later give to Luke. Also show Vader constructing the lightsaber that he uses in the OT.

In the Geonosis battle scene, either give all the Jedi blue lightsabers except for Windu or give the Jedi all different colors, red included.

I’d make the story essentially an allegory of Caesar (Palpatine) crossing the Rubicon (Coruscant) and wresting power from the Senate. Anakin and Obi-Wan were both in Palpatine’s service when he decided to seize Coruscant. Obi-Wan’s loyalties lie with the Republic, and Anakin’s lie with Palpatine. And so they are estranged.

Lets get all three films up to an R-Rating by having tons of casual onscreen nudity.

They should have stuck to Yaeral Poof rather than replacing him with Coleman Trebor. Seeing a character from TPM in action
would have been more meaningful than introducing a character just to kill him off in the same film.

I think about this from time to time. First I want to say that I enjoy all the Star Wars films, including the PT. However, the PT is the one that I think fails for the overall narrative of it's own trilogy and the saga. To make it better I would...

    1) Completely get rid of The Phantom Menace. It only serves to introduce our heroes Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme and to set them up for the next two films.

    2) Make Attack of the Clones the first episode in the trilogy. In this one Anakin and Padme meet for the first time. We find out through dialogue that Padme used to be Queen of Naboo and was Queen at a young age. Keep Qui-Gon in it but only as Obi-Wan's former master. Obi-Wan is a Jedi Knight and Anakin is his Padawan. Anakin and Qui-Gon are close and Qui-Gon occasionally gives Anakin some wisdom.
Anakin still takes Padme to Naboo for protection where he meets her family and they start to fall in love. Anakin has nightmares/visions about his mother in pain and through dialogue we find out she gave him to the Jedi Order when he was just a child to get him away from slavery on Tatooine. We also find out he has occasionally met his mother and has a good relationship with her. He has even debated leaving the order to rescue her from slavery. Padme convinces him to go to Tatooine to make sure she is safe. When they get there, it roughly plays out like it does in the movie. Anakin finds out she has already been freed, meets his step brother, his mother is killed by Tuskin Raiders, and Anakin takes revenge. Then Anakin and Padme go to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan.
Darth Maul is the Sith in the trilogy and not Dooku. Towards the end of the movie Qui-Gon is killed by Darth Maul, who was his former apprentice. Anakin is once again angered and tries to take revenge but he and Obi-Wan are defeated but not killed. Yoda enters and takes on Maul and the rest of the fight plays out like in the movie and Maul gets away. Anakin and Padme do not get married in this one.

    3) Episode II would be a story that takes place during the Clone War. I'm not sure what the overall plot would be. In this one we see Anakin get Knighted as a Jedi and he and Padme get secretly married at the end.

    4) Revenge of the Sith would, for the most part, stay the same. I would change the whole, "She's lost the will to live" with an actual good reason for her death.

Overall I do enjoy what we got but those are major changes I would make to have a better PT.

I just watched the prequels for the first time in years and started thinking what could have been different. Obviously there's a lot of great ideas out there, and this is just for fun. I really do think there's an amazing core story there, I just wished it was executed a bit stronger. Mostly...I'd ditch the whole prophecy for the most part. I'd keep the story focused on Obi-wan as the central protagonist, and his journey as he, and everything around him fails.

    The Phantom Menace
    First Act:
Opens with a 28 yo Obi-wan on a shuttle, along with a small team of 6 Jedi Knights. Obi-wan's former teacher, Qui-gon, is here, leading the mission. Obi-wan is in his first real year as a Jedi Knight. He's honorable, optimistic, brave, duty-bound, and the rookie of the group. The older Knights are more detached, but still brotherly. These Jedi don't wear brown robes. They're Knights, and they're decked out in darker tunics, with upper chest plate armor (like in the clone wars tv show) and hooded capes. Obi fully believes in the Jedi Order. Even though the Jedi Knights have protected the GFFA for thousands of generations, things aren't as rosy as they once were.

Frequent skirmishes are breaking out among the trade routes. The Jedi group is now investigating the kidnapping of Senator Amidala on a busy trade-post world. She was part of a diplomatic delegation, but it didn't go well. Their mission is to rescue her. Things like this happen from time to time, but this one feels different.

The Jedi land on the planet and wade through the city's busy market-place. The Jedi are largely, and strangely, ignored. As they reach their contact (a local spy), they're informed that the Senator is being held in the seized Embassy across the plateau. The situation here is much worse than the Republic believed. He mentions how smaller Trade groups are now organized as a Trade Federation and are taking over with force; they want to break from the Republic. Seizing this planet would mean they would control a vast network of trade lanes that could cripple the Republic.

Suddenly, there's a dispute among various people in the market, but it quickly devolves into a fight against the Jedi instead. The place explodes into a fire-fight. The Jedi elegantly protect themselves, while taking out a few fighters, but soon are overcome and surrounded by more gunfire. They take cover in an abandoned alley-way and break through into a hidden warehouse. Inside, are two men; Owen Lars and Anakin Skywalker. Anakin, roughly 17 (but looks older) does it all; trader, mechanic, navigator, pilot. Owen is more grounded and business minded and a few years older. They've been working together for years. Whatever they can to get by in the Outer Rim. The firefight makes its way inside, and the Jedi, along with a little help from Anakin, and some sarcastic banter, take them down. Anakin is in his moment, he's always wanted a life of adventure, of being a Jedi.

Owen doesn't think it's smart to get involved, but Anakin tells them he can fly them to the Embassy, for a price. The Jedi agree and Anakin quickly takes them to his ship. Obi (the rookie) and Anakin (the outsider) take the cockpit and immediately bond amongst the larger group. Anakin expertly flies the ship through the rugged landscape and keeps them out of sight. While sneaking around the seized Embassy, battling large K2 security droids, the group manages to find Senator Amadala and free her. On their way out, however, the Jedi are greeted by a mysterious figure in dark black robes. They sense dark side. It surrounds them. It almost makes the Jedi sick. The red lightsaber flares alive.

Qui-gon and the other Knights fight the dark warrior, and tells Obi-wan to take the Senator Amidala and Anakin away from the mess. They get back to the ship and then fly to where the fight is taking place and pick up the tired Jedi. Anakin again flies the group around a nest of trade fighter ships and manages to get to orbit. Onboard the group rests. However, Qui-gon knows this was all too easy. Rescuing the Senator. The Darkside Warrior. It's like they wanted us to escape. The group also sense how strong Anakin is with the Force.

    Second Act:
The group heads back to Coruscant. Obi-wan is amazed that the Jedi never found Anakin much younger, but Anakin scoffs back...it's easy to be overlooked on the Outer Rim. Obi-wan wants to bring Anakin before the Council and get him trained. Anakin for a brief moment buys into Obi-wans optimism. Obi explains the differing hierarchy of the Order. The Knights, the Guardians of the Force, the Seers, the Padawans, and so forth, the Council, and then Master Yoda above it all. The Temple itself is older, a stark difference from the sleek art-deco-ness of the rest of Coruscant.

Standing before the Council, led by the authoritative Mace Windu, the Jedi group reports what happened. Mace questions the legitimacy of a Sith return after a millennia of nothing, but that they must explore all possibilities. It's most likely just a rogue-agent. Obi-wan also explains Anakin's strong connection to the Force and asks the council if he should be trained. Unanimously, they say no. Obi-wan gives a disappointed Anakin a nudge, telling him..stick around. The council is dogmatic, but they can see the light...with a little help. You're way too talented not to be trained.

Meanwhile in the Senate, Senator Palpatine warmly greets Amidala and lets her know he's thankful for her safe return. Senator Amidala informs the Senate of what took place. The Senate breaks down arguing that they must not let this world secede from the Republic. Some argue that the Jedi must be tasked with taking down this threat, while others demand the creation of a real army, one that they can control. While a few others, side with the Trade Fed. At the center of this is Palpatine, who reluctantly agrees for the creation of a clone army to deal with this new threat and wants to inform the Jedi of this news. The senate devolves into further arguing, nothing happens.

Word is now spreading among the citizens that the Trade Federation has seized the trade-post planet. Pirated messages from the Trade Fed are broadcast throughout the city warning the Republic not to take action. The Trade Fed also implores any and all words to join the cause. The Jedi Council and the Senate agree that something must be done immediately. The Jedi commit to taking a much larger company of Knights, along with whatever Coruscant Elite Guard they can muster and take back the seized planet. Mace Windu, leader of the council, is more aligned with the warrior sects than the pacifists in the Jedi Order. He thinks that the Jedi can no longer take a back seat to galactic warfare. The time of small local skirmishes are over, if the Trade Fed is successful, supply prices will skyrocket, or be withheld, people will die, and all out war on the Republic will be at hand.

    Final Act:
The Jedi, Anakin, Palpatine and Amidala, and the Coruscant Elite Guard make plans to take back the planet. Amidala knows the Embassy best and makes a plan on how to get to the control center. No one even tries to stop her from coming. Mace Windu thinks divide and conquer is the best approach, if one group can storm the embassy while another surrounds the perimeter and keeps everyone else out from coming in, they can retake the complex. Knowing that Anakin is good pilot and fighter, and is willing to help, the Council agree to let him join the party. By now, the Trade Fed forces will be all over the planet, but if they can retake this center, and take out any of the major ships, and arrest the leaders of the Trade Fed, they might retake the planet.

The group breaks into smaller conversations. Mace and Palpatine discuss strategy. Palpatine wants to know what Master Yoda thinks, but Mace lets him know that Yoda has been quietly meditative these days. Obi-wan gives Anakin a few pointers on the Force (feel it all around you, use your gut, etc.) Amidala comes over and wishes to thank Obi-wan and Anakin for helping rescuing her earlier, as she never had the chance. She wishes Obi-wan luck and welcomes the new stranger (Anakin) to the fray. Anakin notices how beautiful she is. Theres a sense of urgency though as the groups prepare to leave. The Jedi group stand in a circle, raise their sabers to the air, and shout out "The Force Wills it. The Force wills it. The Force wills it!!!"

Four Large Republic Cruisers, and a few smaller fighters come out of hyperspace in orbit of the planet. There's now a few large Transport ships blocking the planet. Usually used for shipping these have been updated with cannons. Anakin expertly leads the squadron of ships through a narrow opening between the ships, all while firing upon the fighters. The Jedi group makes it way past the barricade and down to the surface. They can see some ships have already landed and have began deploying legions of K2 battle droids.

Their ships land directly outside the Embassy complex and immediately begin firing upon the droid army. Half the Jedi, Obi, and Amidala make their way into the complex. The other half fight the legions outside. The inside team make their way to the complex center and find the Trade Fed leaders. Qui-gon is about to arrest them, when the Dark warrior makes his presence known once more. Obi-wan decides to protect Amidala, while Anakin fires on the Trade Fed leaders... as Qui-gon battles Maul. The Trade Fed leaders hold their own and it's basically a draw. Maul then stabs Qui-gon and Obi-wan is enraged. Suddenly there's an explosion outside and the Embassy rocks. Maul escapes and Trade Fed begin firing again upon the group. Obi grabs Qui-gon and they head back to the ship.

The Forces outside haven't been successful and are completely out matched. While scores of K2 droids are destroyed, more and more move forward. Some of the jedi are dead. It's obvious that the Trade Fed had been prepared for this fight for some time. The two teams meet up and escape upon one of the Republic ships. Onboard, the group is overcome by confusion by the size of the army that awaited them. It now dawns on them that the Sith must be leading this effort with the Trade Fed. The Jedi realize that they are outmatched for this kind of conflict. Qui-gon makes Obi-wan promise to train Anakin. If the Sith are out there now, we can't let Anakin fall into their hands. Qui-gon dies in Obi-wans arms. He feels guilty for not being there at his former teacher's side.

The ship arrives back on Coruscant, with the group feeling defeated. Mace tells Obi-wan that Anakin displayed an amazing amount of Force skill. The council, along with Yoda's instructions, reluctantly agree to have him trained. They fully agree that the mysterious dark warrior was in fact a Sith Lord, no doubt about it, and Mace knows that if they let Anakin go now, he'll likely fall prey to them. The Senate finally agrees to make a clone army to take on the Trade Fed and whatever systems they manage to take control of from here on out. Palpatine flashes a quick sly smile and knows that his little plan worked. The Republic and the Senate now acknowledges that they Jedi can no longer fully protect them on their own. Trust in the Jedi is falling fast.

    The End.

prequels have a great story , better and complex than the original trilogy ( i mean story only, not the execution).. in my opinion the whole PT should have been in the tone on ROTS which for me is among the best star wars movies... better acting, avoid some of the corny lines in the first 2 movies, avoid silly characters like jar jar, avoid the pony tail of padawans, avoid vaders "noooooo" and some better reason for padme dying... PT is the ultimate example of what could have been ..

    The biggest rewrites for me:

TC-13 replaced with Threepio. QG and OW take him down to Naboo because of any TF info he may have and in case they need a translator. He replaces Jar Jar.

Anakin is 15 and rides in on a speeder to save Qui-Gon, Padme, Threepio, and Artoo from attacking Tusken raiders on their journey to Mos Espa. It’s an action-packed intro that gives us a heroic Anakin, love at first sight for he and Padme, and Qui-Gon instantly senses the Force in Anakin.

This radically changes the rest of the PT. I would also establish that Obi-Wan is much more like Qui-Gon than he is in the existing PT.

I have approached this in the same way I have on the similar threads for the OT and ST, as a script doctor rather than produce a totally different story. I have also tried to consider that some people will watch the films in the order they were made (so OT first) and others chronologically. If the latter then I wouldn't want to totally spoil the big dramatic reveals from the OT (I am your father) so...

Oh and I should say in MY head cannon I loved LOVED the fan theory that Rey in the ST is a Palpatine!

STAR WARS EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE

    (Changed crawl)
The Galactic Republic is in turmoil,
a thousand years of peace and prosperity
threatened by a separatist movement led
    by the greedy Trade Federation.

A fleet of deadly battleships has blockaded
the agricultural world of Naboo stopping
the export of vital foodstuffs and war seems
    all but inevitable!

While the congress of the Republic endlessly
debates this alarming chain of events, the
    Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched
two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and
justice in the galaxy, to prevent conflict erupting...

    Changes made to the script/story:
    1. Padme Palpatine is a Princess who becomes Senator Queen when her father Senator King Palpatine is believed killed (he is actually being held captive) forcing the Jedi to take her into hiding on NOT Tatooine.
    2. Jar Jar is not a comic relief character. He is a character with principles who desperately wants to reconcile the Gungan and Human populations of Naboo. He does not accompany others to NOT Tatooine.
    3. Not Tatooine - a different planet. Anakin needs to come from a different planet so that hiding Luke on Tatooine actually makes sense!
    4. Anakin is 19 (like Luke) and already uses the Force but without understanding it.
    5. Darth Maul doesn't die - he escapes after killing Qui Gon who along with Obi Wan was trying to rescue Palpatine.
    6. On returning from the space battle as a hero Anakin is greeted by Padme who kisses him signalling the attraction has started and is as much driven by her as by him!
    7. Palpatine becomes Supreme Chancellor at the end abdicating Naboo meaning his daughter Padme remains Senator Queen.

STAR WARS EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES

    (Changed crawl)
Chaos engulfs the galaxy as several thousand
solar systems have declared their independence
from the Galactic Republic and conflict engulfs
    many sectors.

The military power of this separatist movement,
under the leadership of the mysterious Count Dooku
has made it almost impossible for the limited number
of Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order in the galaxy.

Senator Queen Padme Palpatine of Naboo is
returning to the Galactic Senate to vote on the
critical issue of creating an ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
    to assist the overwhelmed Jedi...

    Changes made to the script/story:
    1. Padme and her father Supreme Chancellor Palpatine are in conflict as he is pushing for the increased militarisation of the Republic while she is still trying to resolve the conflict through diplomacy and working with the Jedi. She tells him that he has changed and become too hardline since the death of her mother (his wife) many years previously (setting up a reason for Palpatine to have been drawn to the Dark Side by Darth Plagueis but not revealed in this film).
    2. Anakin and Obi Wan are great friends and fight well together although Anakin is brash and a risk taker that Obi Wan finds hard to keep under control (for example it is Anakin who jumps out of the window instead of staying with Padme after 2nd assassination attempt).
    3. Anakin and Padme's growing relationship is told through their joint adventures and action scenes dropping most of the smoochy stuff. It rekindles as soon as he is assigned to protect her (having not seen each other for the three years while he was training as a Jedi).
    4. Anakin repeatedly asks to return to NOT Tatooine to free his mother but the Jedi Council refuse telling Anakin that being a Jedi is about not having relationships or family bonds and that his family is now the Jedi
    5. Under advice from Palpatine Anakin disobeys the Jedi Council and in secret goes with Padme, who he has been ordered to take into hiding for protection, to rescue hos mother anyway!
    6. Anakin kills the village of NOT Sandpeople (as this is NOT Tatooine) but does not tell Padme his dark secret and instead struggles with it alone.
    7. Count Dooku is implied to be Darth Maul's master but it is a tense relationship full of mistrust.
    8. Obi Wan and Anakin fight Darth Maul and Count Dooku (not Yoda). Obi Wan fights Maul but is rendered unconscious. Anakin kills Dooku but loses his hand (mirrors Luke and Vader) trying to protect the fallen Obi Wan. Mace Windu and the Clones arrive and drive off the Darth Maul before he can finish Anakin.
    9. Anakin and Padme still marry in secret but it is very clear why they need to keep this secret as Anakin will be expelled from the Jedi Order.
    10. The final scene of the film we finally see Darth Sideous who is actually master to both Darth Maul and Count Dooku and learn that he is taking control of the Senate. Darth Maul gives Sideous plans for the Death Star.

STAR WARS EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH

    (Changed crawl)
War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by
the forces of the ruthless Sith Lord, Darth Maul.
The losses are horrendous on both sides. Evil
    is everywhere.

In a stunning move, the fiendish droid leader,
General Grievous, has swept into the Republic
capital to try and kidnap Supreme Chancellor
Palpatine, leader of the Galactic Senate.

As the Separatist Droid Army besieges the
capital two Jedi Knights lead a desperate
mission to protect the Senate and the
    Chancellor...

    Changes made to the script/story:
    1. General Grievous' forces are on the Coruscant trying to capture Palpatine with the battle being fought in the Senate buildings and the Jedi losing until the final confrontation with Darth Maul.
    3. Obi Wan captures Darth Maul but refuses to kill him wanting him to stand trial but Darth Maul manages to overpower Obi Wan and then strikes for Palpatine realising he wants Maul to die but Anakin jumps in to protect (his secret father in law and mentor) and then having been victorious executes him at Palpatine's request! This is witnessed by Padme!
    4. Padme confronts Anakin who also confesses it is not the first time his rage has caused him to massacre (NOT sandpeople on NOT Tatooine). Padme is shocked and is so scared of what Anakin is becoming that she does not tell him she is pregnant!
    5. At the opera Palpatine calms Anakin about his guilt at killing the not Sandpeople, losing his mother and Darth Maul by telling Anakin about the grief he felt at the death of his wife, Padme's mother. Then by association he speaks about Darth Plagueis (implication that Palpatine fell to the dark side due to his grief over his wife's death). Anakin asks what happened to Darth Plagueis and Palpatine tells him "legend has it his apprentice either killed him or imprisoned him at the edge of the Galaxy!" Palpatine also reveals that he knows Anakin has married Padme his daughter but again calms Anakin to tell him he is cool with that and it will be their secret. He thinks Anakin will be good for Padme who is too wayward!
    6. Padme meets with Obi Wan and tells him her fears about what Anakin is becoming and that she is pregnant. They agree to keep it secret and hatch a plan for her to go into hiding with Bail Organa on Alderaan.
    7. Once he discovers Padme has vanished Anakin is convinced Obi Wan knows where she is but is refusing to say straining their friendship even further and sending him into a rage.
    8. After becoming Darth Vader we see Anakin hunting down Jedi across the galaxy who have evaded Order 66 (over a period of months). He is also hunting for Padme (throughout these scenes we also intercut with short scenes of Padme as her pregnancy progresses and her grief grows - indicating the passage of time). In one of the scenes with Anakin/Darth he has captured the Jedi Master who told him he must relinquish his family who begs Anakin/Darth not to kill him..."We are Jedi brothers! You must come back to the light and end this madness," to which Anakin/Darth replies "You once told me to forget any family ties! You are no brother of mine and I am no Jedi!" Anakin/Darth murders him.
    9. After secretly having her baby(s) (off screen so the audience did not see) Padme arrives at Mustafar to see Obi Wan and Anakin/Darth fighting in part because Obi Wan will not reveal the location of Padme and because they are also now on different sides. Anakin/Darth has the upper hand and Obi Wan is in trouble but Padme distracts Anakin pleading with him to come back from the dark side and to not kill his former friend. Anakin convinced Padme is in love with Obi Wan force chokes her unconscious before Obi Wan takes advantage of Anakin's distraction and cuts his legs off causing him to get burnt by lava. Obi Wan is tempted to save his friend but Palpatine arrives with troops and Obi Wan has to flea. The Emperor's troops rescue Anakin/Darth and Palpatine finds his daughter coming into consciousness. He tells her she has betrayed him one last time and kills her!
    10. The very last scene of the film is totally ambiguous whether there was one or two children. Obi Wan and Yoda discuss what they must do... "In plain sight a child hidden can be" said Yoda. "Or on a planet far from the galactic core" replied Obi Wan. "Good. Decided then it is. Go where Obi Wan will you?" asked Yoda. "Tatooine, a backwater desert world. I have a cousin there who can help. And you Master Yoda?" asked Obi Wan. "Alderaan go to first must I. Then hide I must on Degobah" Yoda replied.

As per my head cannon this means the Palpatine and Skywalker bloodlines are merged meaning dark side and light flows through all of them. Darth Sideous/Emperor Palpatine is therefore grandfather to Luke/Leia and Great Grandfather to Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. It also means Snoke could in fact be Darth Plagueis who seduced Palpatine to the dark side over the grief of losing his wife Padme's mother and is now corrupting Ben/Kylo so everything is full circle!

I think Jar Jar should have been killed in Episode III, and not necessarily for fan service
Lucas decided to exile him to Naboo though

Anakin being from Tatooine was indicated by ANH, so that should stay.

I'm surprised no one has made a fan film of an alternate prequel. Not everyone has that kind of budget of course, but still. Especially with alot of fan films that have pretty solid special effects these days.
