James Mangold directing Boba Fett

Hollywood Reporter just reported that James Mangold (yes!) has been tapped to direct the Boba Fett anthology, and that a script is in the works. They also reaffirmed that Daldry will direct Kenobi, but there’s no writer yet.

Mangold is absolutely the right guy to take this on.

 

Logan is, IMO, right up there with Nolan’s trilogy as the absolute best of superhero films. Yuma and Walk the Line are great too (haven’t seen his others). Perfect choice.

ETA: I’m walking into Solo in a minute! Great news to get beforehand.

The most excited I’ve been for any of the directors (and writers). And exactly right for Fett. This one’s going to have some true grit!

 

I'd like to take this opportunity to once again apologize to the people who keep asking for the Kenobi film that, at this rate, we might get by the time McGregor is the same age Guinness was when shooting A New Hope.

 

I'm not over the moon in love with Logan, but Mangold has a great sense of tone and genre and would be an ideal fit for Fett.

Fingers crossed for a post-ROTJ narrative.

I'm just curious when they'll get around to it. I'm curious when they'll get around to this, too, since Mangold has a couple of projects on his slate already. I have a feeling that like the trades all jumping on the Kenobi-Stephen Daldry story last year, this might be a bit premature. And before anyone says it, I really, really don't think we'll ever see more than one Star Wars film a year, but I could always be wrong.

 

I was underwhelmed by Logan. Decent but it kind of felt like just an R-rated extension of what they'd already been doing more so than the type of Wolverine movie I've kind of thought about ever since Aronofsky was attached to one. Can't say this really excites me.

 

Daldry was reaffirmed in this story, so there’s that. I look at it this way. Each of these films is probably going to have a ton of preproduction time, as artists usually get working on these things at the very early stages, and that can be a good thing. Though Daldry might be retired before they let him get started on Kenobi. Lol

This also confirms a definite shift in Lucasfilm by continuing to hire experienced industry veterans after endeavors with Trank, Lord and Miller, and Trevorrow didn't work out.

 

True. Though at least Mangold isn’t a safe, super-commercial director. There’s an independent edge to his stuff, including the big ones.

I have been a fan since 1977 and....this really is the Golden Age. Not '77. Not 80 or 83 or 97 or 99. Right now. There has never really been a better time to be a SW fan.
