Yes this hits me personally. My great aunt was a Ukrainian who got sent to a German work camp as a teen. They were "liberated" by the Soviets, who then sent her father to a gulag and she never saw him again.

Communism is the only ideology that killed over a hundred million people, with history's first, second and fourth most prolific mass murderers hailing from its ranks (the order is 1. Mao, 2. Stalin, 3. Hitler, 4. Pol Pot). Not even the Nazis got close, and that's saying everything you need to know about the stupidity of that meme.

I’m not a fan of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” as a philosophy at all , and at the risk of being Americentric, the US alliance with the Soviets in World War II and with Franco in the 50s was exactly that.

There are plenty of ways to fight Nazis (both the World War II and modern versions) as well as plenty of ways to defend communism as an ideology without defending Stalin. And I say that as someone who dislikes communism as an ideology—if (general) you really have to defend a dictator whose policies caused his citizens to starve to death (among other things, I didn’t even include the gulags in that) in order to defend communism, then communism has no defense.

Yes, my great-grandfather and grandfather were both Russians who were arrested in one of Stalin's purges. My great-grandfather was tortured for two years before being killed; my grandfather was sent to the Eastern front, which was essentially a death sentence (but he survived).

I know, "Stalin wasn't a real communist", etc., but that meme conflates the two anyway. I'm sorry, but I'm not giving the thumbs up to Stalinism just because "Hitler bad".
