If they are still be discriminated against I have never heard of it. the only thing I've seen lately about the native americans around New England is how rich they are getting from the casinos they have on their land.

Two million bucks in tax payers money to send the troops to the border to stop the caravan and now Trump is sending them home before the caravan even shows up. Jesus Christ.

I live about 4000 miles away and lately I've heard of natives having their land taken from them without compensation, holy\burial land being bulldozed over, natives forced to live in squalor (as in 3 families living in a 2 bedroom house), natives having to fight in the courts to have their ancestral remains returned to them, the president mocking the code talkers and using racist native slurs against rival politicians, etc.

But in fairness, I do pay attention to the news.

Really? I'm not surprised. I'm surprised it didn't happen in the early months.

@robert martins (and all debating with him)

The point is that, due to the actions of the past (slavery, segregation, Native American forced removal and genocide, etc.) it has created a situation in the present where outcomes (health outcomes, economic outcomes, etc.) are better for white people than non-white people, simply by being born white or not-white. Ending slavery didn't simply "flip a switch." Neither did ending segregation.

    To make another metaphor:
    • Your parents stole the life savings of Mr. & Mrs. Brown. Before this, each family had the exact same resources.
    • As a result, you don't have to pay for college, your parents will pay for it. But the kid of Mr. & Mrs. Brown, who has the same age as you, same IQ, same type of house in same neighborhood, same everything else, doesn't have any money from parents to pay for college now, so will either have to go into debt or just not go to college.
    • Furthermore, the Brown's might now need to sell their house and move into an apartment, since their life savings are gone. While your parents can move in to a bigger house in a better neighborhood.
    • As a result, your kids will be even better off than you, most likely. While the next generation of the Brown's will begin in an even worse place.
    • But there's a chance the next generation of the Brown's will work hard and make-up the gap, and the next generation of your family won't work hard and might stagnate or fall, you say? Right?
    • Imagine it happens again in the next generation. You steal from your peer among the Brown's. Then it happens yet again the following generation: your kids steal from their kids. It continues for generations. So on and so on. Whether your family works harder or not, they keep getting richer. Whether the Brown's work harder or not, they keep getting financially wiped out each generation. This is the impact of slavery. This is the impact of segregation.
    • Finally, dozens of generations later, the stealing finally stops (this is debateable - there's still discrimination in real life, but for this metaphor let's say it stops).
    • The modern descendants of your family are orders of magnitude richer than the modern descendants of the Brown family. Even if it does finally depend how hard each works, generational damage has been done, and the gap is very large.
    • What would be the right thing to do?
To return from the metaphor... in my opinion (others here may disagree), the biggest thing is that outcomes (economic, health, etc.) have been skewered. In my opinion, this calls for two things:

    1. stop any discrimination or bias that still exists in the system with new laws if needed, and enforce the existing laws that we already have which aren't properly enforced now. We may debate and disagree onwhat these are, but I think we can agree that the existing laws should be enforced, and any discrimination/bias that still exists in the system should have new laws to address them if needed? Right? @robert martins

    2. create a higher "floor" for everyone ... instead of reparations for one demographic, I think we need a stronger social safety net to ensure that, when people hit rock bottom, it's not a literal death sentence or a lifetime of bankruptcy/poverty, but a floor from which they have their own well-being and the knowledge/skills/tools to pick themselves back up again as soon as they are able. So nothing perpetuates generationally, and every individual has the potential to turn it around for themselves well within their own lifetime, in as short a time as possible. Especially in this age of ever-increasing automation and globalization. We may debate and disagree on what the "floor" should be and how it should be "raised," but I think we can agree that this would be a fair way of proceeding on this touchy subject that benefits and protects everyone... right? @robert martins

Marcia Fudge has endorsed Pelosi. I would not count Pelosi out yet. Without a viable alternative, her opponents are stuck. Remember, people tried to stop her from becoming Minority leader as well and failed.

That image with the takes and towels is poignantly accurate.

I’m reading Trump’s official White House statement condoning the murder/dismemberment of the journalist , and I must say, “This man...” Ugh. He is blatantly monstrous every day, as we know. But he’s writing this like a third grader, and he says things like “heavily negotiated.” It’s as though he’s proud that he made the world a more dangerous place. I’m going back to sleep.

The Saudis never needed Trump to be dangerous. They have been dangerous since the very foundation and humble beginnings of their state in 1744.

Tomorrow is going to be the coldest Thanksgiving in history in little Rhody. I guess old man winter of RI hasn't got the global warming memo yet. As far as the article outsourced linked I can sympathise with the natives but I also see the need to have consistent voter ID laws. You can't have one standard for one group and another for another group.

    "Climate Change"... "Weather Change"...

Sound the same to anyone who has no idea what they're prattling on about. Or allows Fox News to form their thoughts for them.
