It also has a ton of references to Prequel Memes including Sand, It's Treason Then, and others.

Where does this take place timewise? Obviously before RoTS since that's when she dies..

Prologue is TPM, the bulk is 4-5 years after TPM, epilogue is post-ROTS

Kylo is...abusive. So was Anakin. They're villains. I dunno what the controversy is.

    I’m up to chapter 8.

I love the reference to Qui-Gon, and Padme honoring him every year at the memorial for the Battle of Theed. I love the fact that she touched her necklace when she thought of the Jedi.

The “malfunctioning droid” assassination attempt was certainly creative, and it’s interesting but not surprising that the Trade Federation started on Padme as soon as she arrived in Coruscant. I really liked the Senate scene, the fact that she realized that democracy was not really functioning as it should, and felt like her voice wasn’t heard and that they did not have enough time to read the bills before they passed.

Mina Bonteri’s introduction and no-nonsense orientation for Padme was great.

As far as Clovis—one scene with him and I’m already hoping Mariek kicks him in the crotch before the book is over.

Almost done. There are a lot of things I like about the book and how it gives Padme much needed agency and character.

I've also been a fan in general of the Disney YA books. I think the distinction is pretty meaningless, actually.

The Leia book was really great. So wait Ahsoka. Lost Stars...of course!

This one...is not bad but not as good as the better ones, IMO.

A pretty middle of the road SW book, IMO.

That being said, I am enjoying it.

Like the author herself, this is a book I've longed after for quite some time and can say I was definitely most pleased with.

I simply love the contrast between working inside & outside of systems that Padme's character allows us to see.

Padme really does have an interesting little corner in the SW universe of her own even before you factor in all the ways she fits into the larger story and I think this book goes a long way in illustrating that to readers. Naboo forever :amidala:. Glad that Johnston got to play in it's sandbox.

Oh man. So what happened was the author and some other YA Authors were discussing how the "trend of Nazi romances" and "fun" Kylo Ren and Darth Vader comic books and merchandising has led to a "casual, unconcerned view of burgeoning fascism." These are pretty legitimate literary criticisms that came up when the literal Nazi romance film "Where Hands Touch" came out last year. You know, kind of like how for decades people have been debating about whether Beauty and the Beast normalizes or has made blase abusive romances, and/or the expectation of emotional labor placed on women protagonists to rehabilitate the bad boy.

If you look on twitter, there are people who interpreted EK Johnson's and other authors' comments to be "She called me a Nazi for owning Kylo Ren merchandise." Which she clearly did not, but sometimes people struggle with divesting themselves from their interests and cannot differentiate between someone criticizing something you like (such as a ship, such as Reylo) and criticizing you. While it would be pretty spurious to call someone a Nazi just because of what they ship, it's totally fair game to call Kylo Ren a fascist! There's a lot of literary commentary to be had about this character's role in the sequels and how, as a Vader fanboy (how meta) Kylo Ren himself has a "casual unconcerned view" of fascism. Namely, his grandfather's.

I think some folks don't like it when you point out that their crush is a fascist. Or that they are shipping the heroine with a man who ordered civilians killed in the first two minutes of screen time, murdered the only father figure Rey has ever had, tried to kill Finn for standing up to him, and negged the heck out of Rey.

I don't want this thread about Padme to devolve into a Reylo debate, so to spin it back to the subject at hand, I'm wondering what folks thought about Padme's romance or non-romance in this book. Particularly, I'm wondering how Padme (who witnessed a decent amount of healthy romances, such as the Panakas, her own parents, Yane/Sache, etc.) ended up with such an unhealthy one.

I mean I do believe that the distinction of YA Books are that they are about well....Young Adults....Teenagers...Stories about growing up, etc etc.

cause Anakin is good in bed obviously. jk Padme ended up with an unhealthy one cause it reflects the father of mortis and abeloth's relationship. the chosen one , the successor to the father of mortis : Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader sealed padme's fate once he compared her to an angel like the father did to abeloth those countless centuries ago :p

so it was that he accepted into their family a stranger.

She was as beautiful and graceful as the Celestials and a happy distraction from the endless struggles that beset him and his offspring. The woman appeared to be one of the Diathim, yet she had no memory of her past, not even her name, recalling only that she’d walked through an ancient portal and arrived there. This was a mystery, but he could detect no evil or deception in her, resolving only that an ancient gate, perhaps a damaged one, had brought her from Iego to this world.

I think Padme ended up with Anakin because he was pretty much the only one in her life, other than her family, who saw her as herself and whom she felt would have been interested in her if she were just Padme—not a Queen, not a Senator. That’s my head-canon reasoning, as someone who mostly liked the romance until the midpoint of ROTS.

    My chapters 8-10 review:

As I said earlier—the extraordinary lengths that Sabe went into on Tatooine to free slaves and find Shmi Skywalker should dispel any criticism that Padme just left her there. Although I did have a moment of “Oh DAMN, so close” when Sabe talked about getting a place near Mos Eisley instead but Padme wanted her back on Coruscant. It probably would not have taken her long to find Shmi if she had gone to Mos Eisley.

The nightclub scene was interesting, as was Typho’s protectiveness. Looks like they’ve still got communication issues to work out.

What I am hoping for regarding Bail Organa is a friendship that we saw in Karen Miller’s TCW books. I know those aren’t too popular around here. And while I don’t need to see Bail saying “kriffin’”, seeing a close friendship build would be nice.

And Clovis—just **** off already. Go shopping for hair gel in the Uscru District.

Ok, literally just finished it. I'll probably have a lot more to say on it later, but I just wanted to say I could not stope smiling while reading. Padmé has always been one of my favorite characters so I'm glad she's finally getting sometime in the spotlight. Definitely one of my favorite books in the new canon.

I finished it in about three hours, which is slow for me because there was so much nuance to unpack. It is a brilliant book and I am very glad I obtained the American hardcover (seriously, @LAJ_FETT, you’re missing out).

Mina and the Man are generally my favourite non-Sabe, non-Padme, non-Captain Panaka II, non-Palpatine bits, but the Epilogue.

The Epilogue floored me. I gasped, feeling the sheer emotional punch of the reaction.

She’s right. Sabe was right. We lost so much.

I liked Ahsoka, but I much preferred this.

So, how does it fit into the One Canon Sinny?

Only ones left on Amazon UK are in the Marketplace at inflated prices. I can wait for the pb - just won't look at the spoilers here.

    I grabbed my from eBay.

One Canon-wise it’s a curious one, because of the one term vs two terms.

Janus could have lost his seat at some point, or just been too embarrassing, for example. We’ve not a lot of information about Janus’ term as Senator. Mon being in the Senate earlier is just new information. The new monarch won’t be in power by the time the new monarch in Legends is relevant. It’s a lot earlier than we expected for Dooku to begin fiddling with the Senate but it’s a good moment, and it works damn well in spite of being earlier.

Unfortunately, this does tend to be how it pans out. Every US hardback SW YA book I nabbed by preordering/buying from sellers I knew would get the book, but once it was out their stock tended to decline and they switched to the paperback.

It really is quite brilliant, isn't it?

This was a very good read. Found it enjoyable. Read in 7 hours, I know, it’s slower than some of you, but there was a lot to grasp. This book along with the Palme comic were good.

Was I the only one who wondered about the "white sun" carved into the door at Shmi's house that Sabe told Padme about? All I could think of was Beru Whitesun.

I haven't finished the book yet so if there's a connection.....
