Wha - they - why did they - what - Missing Link? Really?

Also, I liked the movie quite a bit, but anybody who thought The Sisters Brothers was going to make money was going to go bankrupt sooner rather than later.

On paper, I don't blame them- if I had the opportunity to fund a Laika film, I would do it too. It just didn't have the visual hook of their other films to draw people in and was easily overlooked. I didn't even catch it and I actually wanted to support it in theaters.

Oh, yeah, I had forgotten it was Laika actually. It didn't really have the look of Laika on a cursory glance, so, yeah, I guess my own reaction to the film is symptomatic of the movie's larger problem.

I dug Missing Link a lot but it was certainly tonally way different from Laika's previous output and the ads sold it sort of like that too. It's a fun lark 40s Adventure serial callback but certainly doesn't have the weight of something like Kubo and the Two Strings. Probably why the marketing made it seem like a generic kids flick instead of by the very dependable Laika. But it certainly made a hellova lot less than expected, probably.

Yeah, the trailers were almost borderline Illumination in feel, despite the stop motion.

I quite dug Battle Angel although even though I have zero context for the anime it's based on the damn plot progression and infodump is on hyperspeed. It's never boring, though, so that's good!

Anyway, in the streaming movies / theatrical release window thingie, it is worth nothing that while Amazon has played by the theatrical release window rules (for Oscar movies like Manchester By the Sea) they are now moving to the Netflix model of short limited theatrical release and on streaming a few weeks later with Eddie Redmayne/ Felicity Jones The Aeronauts (it lost it's IMAX release sked because of this)

The new Little Women adaptation has a trailer up:

I suspect Saoirse Ronan is gunning for an Oscar nomination, and may well get one if the adaptation is any good (Ryder got a nom for the same role, iirc).

I watched the trailer this morning and I had no idea that Eddie Murphy had partnered up with Netflix. And I didn't know this was based on a true story, to which true story, I don't know that as I've never heard of Dolemite. Perhaps Eddie Murphy's own person story in a way? The trailer reminds me of Hollywood Shuffle and the Eddie Murphy films where he played multiple characters like Coming to America and The Nutty Professor. Additionally, it was nice to see Eddie Murphy again back to his usual tricks and so I was hooked by the trailer and thrilled to see it will be coming to Netflix.

Shame that’s only on Netflix. Everyone looks like they’re having a great time honoring Rudy.

@Sith_Sensei__Prime It’s based on Rudy Ray Moore’s life as he brought legendary blaxploitation character Dolemite to life. I haven’t seen those movies in eons, but they were fun in the way that some exploitation movies can be. I like the casting too.

When I first heard that Netflix had signed Eddie Murphy my immediate reaction was "Throwing more money at a dated star whose act from when they were at their height can't be updated for today's boundaries." But this ... this looks like they might be on to something. It's giving me a Boogie Nights vibe.

It's probably just bad luck. His Alien 5 concept was put on indefinite hold because Fox saw more value in pushing ahead with Covenant and his Halo movie (Which isn't an 80's action movie, but is the only other big franchise film that I know of that he was attached to.) fell apart because of bickering between studios over who would pay what share of the budget.

Honestly, I think he's better off just making his own projects. They're unsubtle and ham fisted, but there aren't a lot of sci-fi directors forging ahead making their own original IP. I'd take another Elyssium over another mediocre reboot. Or even another Chappie, if push came to shove.

Why'd he never do a sequel to District 9?

Yeah, I wasn't looking forward to another reboot of Robocop. That film was a perfect satire of its era and that's the biggest reason the 2014 reboot didn't resonate with audience. It was a run of the mill soulless action flick. And I always don't believe in "scheduling conflicts" as the actual reason for a person leaving a film project. I tend believe budget and audience demand are really the big factors.

I personally like Chappie and I think most people had different expectations for the film. I feel like most people that the film was going to be happy and upbeat like something along the lines of Short Circuit or Wall E. To me, Chappie was a film about technology and the application of the user.

I've never seen any adaptation of Little Women because of my male narrowed minded view of it being just a "chick flick." However, watching this trailer does pique my interest. I like the way the film is shot and performed in that it doesn't appear to be hitting over the head as a period piece. It feels fresh and the characters alive rather than stuffy.

Very disappointed. I think him doing a property like this would have worked out pretty well.
