My Reviews of the 2nd and 3rd Episodes

The Second Episode is essentially the story after the genesis of Country, in which you see the influences of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family start to roll into a series of new performers. Seeing Gene Autry being an actor who performed in a number of Republic serials, the kind that influenced Indy and Star Wars was something else, especially since one of the serials he did was kind of a sci-fi bridge which felt very Flash Gordon-esque . Also the birth of Western Swing and Bluegrass .

The Third Episode gets better as the story starts to pick up steam with Hank Williams being front and centre- Dude was amazing, and seeing June Carter doing the act she did in the Opry reminded me of the Walk the Line movie a bit. Truly surreal. I almost even cried when Hank dies at the end of the episode .

 

The police officer was like where are you going so my dad said, "we're taking the kids to the star wars convention" and then he asked if he knew we were speeding and my parents said yes and then he was like "I appreciate your honesty" and took my dad's drivers license to his car and was there for like 5 minutes then he came back and asked if we were Catholic and we said yes and he was like yeah okay have fun at the star wars thing and let us go.

Wow that's some high quality story telling right there

hey Dags! no, unfortunately i have not read the Georgics (yet!). I had a friend back in school days who was always raving about it, tho...somehow just never got around to it (again, yet!)

there def is a lot of blood and guts in the Iliad, but those aren't my fave parts. the best part to me is the end when achilles comes down from his rage-fest to show compassion to the aged Priam. powerful example of human redemption. and little details like the interactions of Hector with his wife and little son before he goes off to face Achilles. it helps that i had an AWESOME prof back in school who introduced me to the Iliad. his lectures were mesmerizing and he made every line come alive!

i agree the Odyssey is fantastic too, of course! one of my fave little details in that is how Odysseus's dog Argos responds when he recognizes his master has returned after so many years. and then he dies!

and i love emojis so no prob there (and minions too, for what it's worth lol)

speaking of things that make me tear up (Argos etc)...did you see the Macca interview this week on Colbert? there's a segment where he talks about how often he still dreams about John and I thought it was so poignant. He also reminisced about this lovely pic of the two of them:

No, I've never watched any Ken Burns documentary. But I saw part of the preview/telethon thing on PBS several months ago because my parents were watching it.

 

Scenario 1:

cop: are you catholic?
your dad: yeah..
cop.................................. wonderful have a good night!

Scenario 2
cop: are you catholic?
your dad: no...Lutheran
cop: ahh a heretic huh? that'll be a fine

My favorite "scene" of the Aenead so far is when Aeneas is fleeing Troy and the city is burning behind him and he's holding his son's hand and carrying his father or something and he doesn't realize until much later that his wife got left behind and so he literally runs all the way back and the city is quiet and dead and he's screaming her name and then he sees her ghost and he tried to embrace her but he can't because she's a ghost and he's crying and she tells him to go on and take care of their son.

Like... Wow. That is so epic. Like imagine that as a movie scene. The imagery there is just incredible.
