I was good when I started playing trumpet in the 6th grade, but I just stopped practicing. In high high school I kept trying to to rededicate myself to it because I wanted to get serious, and I even considered majoring in music when I got to college, but it never happened. And in high school jazz band, we had to do music theory, and that was the nail in the coffin for me wanting to seriously pursue music. Music theory is like calculus to me. I had to take the same test about major and minor third and fifth chords, like, three times. And then started doing the modes with the Greek names, and for some of the kids it obviously "clicked" and I was like lost in the woods. It was an epiphany. It was like in the fourth grade when I was playing basketball and then I just kind of plateaued skill-wise and kept getting beaten. I was like, why am I even still doing this?

The math/music connection is something that Calculus teachers say to their despairing music students in order to keep them from failing their class. Or dropping out altogether.
    Lol.
At least in my experience. Ha.

I'm comfortable with music. I've taught myself to play, make musical phrases with, any instrument I pick up...
    Guitars
    Bass
    Double bass
    Cello
    Violin
    Banjo
    Mandolin
    Ukulele
    Sitar
    Lute
    Oud
    Piano
    Keyboards
    Drums
    Percussion
    Harmonica
    Trumpet
    Flute
    Voice, both lead and harmony

Mathematics was a constant struggle throughout all of my schooling. I had a legit nervous breakdown in 8th grade over my Algebra homework.
My dad brought me to a shrink for a few sessions to help me come to terms with the fact that math was now a part of my life. I legit hate it. At least I did when I was 14 yrs old.

Kudos to those who have the music/math connection like that.
I tip my cap to them.
    It ain't me.

Lol, I wanted to, but I decided to restrain myself. But it was a struggle. There were at least two or three directions I could have gone with it too. It's a shame.

    That's completely understandable.
    Heard similar stories countless times.

In contrast, I took music theory sophomore year of HS and got an A+.
Not trying to brag here, honestly.
I took AP music theory senior year and got a 5 on the exam.
I tested out of Freshman theory at music school in college, meaning I could have one less class, but after auditing a few sessions and seeing how incredible the theory prof was, I registered and took the class anyway.
    Easy A. And much fun.

Music theory is the opposite of math and Calculus for how my brain works.

    Math was a nightmare.

    Music theory was joyful.

It's all about hearing and feeling anyway.
    The opposite of mathematics, imo.

I don't know, I'm that way with languages. Well, except in the straight As across the board way.

    @Huttese 101
When you say "I don't know" what are you referring to?

Languages is a separate discipline from math and music, no?
Meaning that they are all individual and specialized.

Languages and music having more of a connection on the hearing/speaking level and languages and math having more of a connection on the writing level.

Is that what you were referring to?

Exactly me. As far as the "math" subjects go, I am able to study to the test, and then the info automatically gets replaced by the next thing.
