Spookiest opening credits ever? Good Lord.

 

Camera soars calmly over forested and rocky landscape. Car drives a road that snakes through the scenic wild.

 

Shelly Duval reminds me of a couple women I know IRL.
She is so sweet and innocent in this movie and she has no way to relate to what haunts her poor child and her hot headed husband.

I sympathize with her and Ms. Duvall gives a terrific performance, imo.

She is so sweet and trying to do good. I don't know how else to say it.

 

Yeah, but she's no Rebecca DeMornay clearly. For, uh...reasons.

Watch for the use of mirrors throughout this film.
Filming into and out of them, if that makes sense.

The bathroom in the background outside the bedroom foreshadows Room 237. It's even lit similarly.

"I don't want to talk about Tony anymore."

Kubrick also rearranged the furniture, pictures, etc to create a sense of unease. and they filmed at night and pumped in the lighting "like they were on the surface of the moon." I realize you prob. know this already lol.

Jack isn't crazy from the start here.
He's just dry drunk with 5 months of sobriety and he hates it. He's failed in his mind at his career and he's a real dick to his family. He injured his son.
He's not that great a guy, but he ain't crazy yet. Or is he?

This hotel makes him crazy.

Credit to S. King for that idea.

It's terrifying.

 

Kubrick's use of space and lenses (I'm not a film expert) is pure genius. Everything is just a little OFF.

 

"Don't worry mom, I already know all about cannibalism."

That's...reassuring.

 

Those girls appearing in the game room to poor Danny by himself.
Poor guy. This movie creates sympathy for these people.

Imagine being in Dan's shoes.

"Well, it's very homey."

Then the maze.

And all the Indian history like Chris said, even decorating and providing motifs in the hotel decor.

A word to the not-so-wise, whenever you hear the words, "Built on a Native American burial ground" get the hell out of there!

 

I always dress for the occasion.

 

King took this a little personally, which may have been why he didn't like the film. I think he saw Jack as himself. Jack was a bit more "normal" in the book, until the end, when his demons overtook him. But film and literature are different mediums. Both are great; but they are very different.
